Held by CBP at JFK

(Before anyone comes for me, he does fly in a carrier it’s just not in the photo!)

I’ve been flying back and forth 1-2x per year between NYC and Barcelona with a dog for 7 years (3 years with this dog) and always had a smooth ride. He’s fully documented in both countries and I have global entry. Usually they just glance at his CBP import form/rabies cert and send me on my way.

Flying into JFK a few weeks ago, however, I was asked to step aside and taken into a back office by a CBP officer. They held me for over an hour without telling me anything and said someone would come speak with me soon. When I tried to text my dad waiting for me in the terminal to let him know I’d be delayed I was berated for using my phone and told I was not allowed to contact anyone. I also expressed concern that my dog had just come off an 8 hour flight and needed the pet relief area and was refused access.

Finally someone came in and grilled me about my dog. My understanding is that the CBP import form is technically the only paperwork required at the moment but they wanted to see all his vet records which thank GOD I always carry with me just to be safe. After a lot of questioning the agent finally said “okay well I guess you can go” and they let me leave.

The whole experience left me a bit shaken. Has anyone else had anything similar happen recently?

Host asked to show property during my stay…am I overreacting? [Guest]

I checked into a studio in CDMX last night and was planning to message the host this morning about an issue with a listed amenity that isn’t as advertised. But before I had a chance, I was shocked to receive a message asking if he could show the apartment to a prospective buyer while I’m out.

I’m a woman traveling alone in an unfamiliar city so safety is obviously a huge concern for me. I told the host I wasn’t comfortable with anyone entering the apartment while I’m staying here, and to his credit he said okay he wouldn’t show it.

But now I’m pretty anxious about it - there are multiple security cameras in the hallway (disclosed properly) so he knows if I’m here or not, and the door has an electronic lock with no additional deadbolt so I have no way to fully secure it whether I’m here or not.

I’ve been on Airbnb for 12 years and never been asked this before, and I’m a bit frustrated to even be put in this position. I’m considering leaving my personal phone here recording to make sure no one decides to “just take a quick peek”. I’m here for a very intense multi-day work event and definitely did not need the added stress.

Am I overreacting? Is there anything else I should do?

Communities for people with parents down the rabbit hole

Posting for a friend whose mom is pretty far deep 🙂

Are there any support groups/chats for people whose boomer parents have fallen down the conspiracy hole?

If not, she’s thinking about starting a monthly support group.

Thank you!!

Edit: just from the first couple comments seems like maybe there’s a need for this - she’s started an instagram called @magatookmymom if anyone is interested in chatting with her
