First motorcycle advice: RS 457 vs 450SS for a financially-conscious new rider?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some outside perspectives because I've been researching this for months and I think I've reached the point where I'm overthinking it.

I'm 30 years old, 5'7", about 155 lbs. I recently passed the MSF course and have zero street riding experience on motorcycles, although I've driven manual transmission cars for years.

A little background:

\- My daily commute is only about 12 minutes through Dallas city streets.

\- I don't plan on riding highways much at first.

\- This will be my primary transportation for a while.

\- I intend to keep the bike for at least a couple of years.

\- I enjoy spirited riding, but I'm not looking to be reckless or chase top speed.

Financially, things have improved a lot recently. My previous car was totaled, which actually eliminated a large monthly car payment and insurance expense. I've been rebuilding my credit, paying off old debt, and by August I expect to have roughly $1,500–2,000 available for a down payment. I'm trying to make a smart purchase—not just one based on emotion.

I've narrowed my choices to:

\- Aprilia RS 457

\- CFMOTO 450SS

The RS 457 appeals to me because of the premium chassis, electronics, rider aids, and overall quality of the package.

The 450SS appeals to me because it's less expensive to buy, likely less expensive to repair if I make beginner mistakes, and ownership costs seem a bit lower.

One thing I'm struggling with is Aprilia's reputation. I know older Italian bikes had reliability concerns, but I'm seeing mixed opinions about the RS 457. Assuming I buy new with the factory warranty and keep up with scheduled maintenance, should reliability actually be a deciding factor?

If you were advising someone in my exact situation—not just recommending your favorite motorcycle—which would you suggest and why?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have owned either bike or have experience with both brands.

Thanks in advance!
