16M, Looking for first bike recs (and gear recs)

I've been looking around and it seems like the Ninja 400 and the CBR650R are pretty well recommended from this community (and others) and i was wondering, which one i should get (or should i get something else)? Im leaning towards the CBR for the E Clutch and just generally looks better imo, im probably gonna put a throttle tamer on the CBR if i do get it while first starting out if i do end up getting it. Im gonna be using it as my main vehicle for 2-3 years ish, mostly for getting to work and back, but for just generally riding (responsibly) around. I was also wondering if AA/AAA hoodies/clothes are actually sufficient for protection, and how big the difference in CE1 and CE2 gloves are, and whether CE2 is an incremental upgrade or a huge jump. Probably gonna be 80% city riding and 20% highways (after i feel comfortable ofc). And if anyone knows if the CBR is significantly more expensive to insure. TLDR: CBR650R vs Ninja 400, or something else? Thanks in advance 😄. Edit: Budget is less than 10K USD, will be getting used if possible

Short Rider discovering that seat height is not everything

Posted about cruisers before my MSF course.

Started the course on a Honda Rebel and was excited because it was on my specs wishlist. The low seat height was great... if all we did was ride with our feet. Truth is many of the reviewers who talk about low seat height are not short. Flat footing is good, but I found the reach over the tank to be too long and it made learning clumsy. Switched to a Suzuki TU250X standard bike and while a bit tiptoed, the upright position, bent elbows was a world of difference. Candidly, I do not think I would have passed on the Rebel.

Passed the course and now am ready for a first bike. I went to a used bike shop today and sat on a bunch. The Yamaha Bolt cruiser felt better than the Rebel but still a bit of a reach. But was shocked how good the Yamaha MT 03 fit. Also good were the Suzuki SV650 and Triumph Street Twin. I know -- all very different.

I am very honest with myself about skill level -- very beginner. I am looking for something to learn on in parking lots and eventually enjoy on the weekends. I am 90% there on the MT 03. But I waned to see if there were other suggestions for relatively low seat and more compact upright bikes I should consider.

Thanks.

Torn between naked or touring

Hi all, I have been hung up on a mt-07 for about the past 10 years. I am at the point where I am going to purchase a motorcycle. I rode a Buell blast and an 80s yamaha triple for about a year about 10 years ago and had a great time cruising around back roads.

I'm not necessarily a new rider but its also been awhile. An older friend said the 07 is gonna be tough on the highway with how light it is and suggested going with the mt-09. I'm a bit concerned about this big of bike right away but confident I could figure it out.

I plan on using the bike for weekend fun cruising and exploring. I will be ideally riding to and leaving the bike in Phoenix during the Minnesota winter and riding back which is ~1600 miles direct.

I would plan on getting a windshield and saddle bags for this trip, maybe change the seat.

I thought about the tracer 9 but it feels big and heavy. I sat on and thought about a Honda rebel 1100 cruiser but both the tracer and rebel couldnt convince me away from the mt-07.

How is the mt07/09 on long rides? If I'm not looking to carve up corners and get the most performance out of the mt is there a better option?

Thanks

I love bikes but have no idea what to get!

Hi all,

I have recently passed my full A unrestricted license in the UK.

For context, I have been riding a moped for 8 months, and learnt on a 750 Hornet.

I live in central/west London, so insurance is the main barrier to entry here. I am 6’1 and 90kg/200lbs. I just want to be comfortable, have enough power and for it to sound moderately good. I really don’t like the sound of single cylinders… happy for someone to try and change my mind.

On my list are these bikes so far:
Scrambler 900
Speed twin 900
Scrambler 400 x
Cb500 hornet
Bonny t100

Ideally I would like a CB650R but I just don’t think I’m getting insured on that…

Does anyone have any good suggestions? I wouldn’t mind buying an older bike, say 2015 up if it means it would be cheaper.

Thanks for any and all help!

Recommendations for a commuter new to riding? (6’, 220lb) Hilly Area

I currently use an electric scooter to get to work, it’s super fun at times — other times I’m like oh… I’m riding a fucking scooter. In all seriousness I’m just looking for something that zips me around town quicker, I can’t even imagine taking the bike out for longer than 1-2 hours (both ways).

The nearest city-hub is 35 mins from me, so that’s a pretty good benchmark for distance.

Modern style (always love Yamaha’s when I see them), very interested in anything electric, nothing Harley-like (is that a style?), would really love to keep the price down <$10k but open to any and all suggestions. I want something that won’t have me stinking to high hell when I’m finishing a ride, my job is mostly business casual and would prefer not to have to change into work clothes every day at work (but again it is what it is if I find the right bike!).

I’m 6’, 220lbs so definitely could lose a couple, very very very hilly area I live in as well. Let me know if there’s anything else I should touch on for a proper recommendation, I honestly have zero clue how and where to start looking. Comfortable with any brand as well but let me know ones to avoid or prioritize.

Edit: sport I think is the word I’m looking for the style, not ‘modern.’ Essentially anything that doesn’t look like a Moped or Harley Davidson I’m cool with

First bike—ninja, Z, or eliminator 500?

I’m a short rider with a 28 in inseam and I’m getting my first bike. I can’t choose between these 3. I’m probably just gonna be riding around town and highways.

Would love advice choosing between these and what their biggest differences are.

Used or new?

I just got my motorcycles permit and I’ve been using my friends ctx700 to learn on. I want to get a sport bike so of course I’m looking at the ninja 500. A lot of people say to get a used bike for your first one, but I will be buying it with cash either way. All of the listings for used tend to be $4800+ when a new one is about $1000 more. Is it really worth getting a used one that I don’t know how it was treated when a new one isn’t that much more?

Is Honda Steed 400 WORTH IT???

Okay, so I’m getting my motorcycle license soon, and the whole reason I started in the first place was because I dreamed of owning a Honda Steed 400. But recently, I suddenly had this epiphany about what it actually means to own an “old” bike, and now I’m worried I might regret spending a lot of money on a 33-year-old motorcycle.

A lot of the motorcycle dealers I’ve talked to have told me that they can’t guarantee that a Steed can be a reliable long-term bike, especially for things like daily commuting and stress-free riding. They’ve mentioned possible issues like carburetor problems and age-related maintenance. What scares me is that I barely see people talking about these problems online, so it’s hard to tell whether they’re actually rare or if people just don’t mention them much.

As a backup plan, I’ve also been considering the new Honda Rebel 300 in case it ends up winning me over compared to the Steed.

New, taller rider looking for Cruiser suggestions.

Hey, all! As the title says, I’m new to the world of motorcycles but I have a preference for Cruiser-style bikes. I’ve become quite partial towards the Honda Rebel but I’m worried I’m a little too large for it. I stand about 6’1 (185cm) and weigh about 244lbs (111kg). Would the Rebel be suitable for me or would you recommend another cruiser as a beginner bike?

Thinking about getting a BMW G 310R as a first motorcycle. thoughts?

Hey everyone so I don’t know much about motorcycles but I’m looking to get the bike listed about as a first motorcycle. I live in a city, and commute to the suburbs so I will be doing a lot of highway riding. Also I’m not sure if it matters but I’m 6’1 240ish mainly athletic build. Does this seem like a good purchase for someone that is new to riding and would it be okay for my size? Any thoughts or recommendation is appreciated.

BMW R1300GS opinions

Anyone here bought a R1300GS with ASA? After honest opinions on how they found it and, if they have experience of the honda dct, how it compares. Going for a demo ride on Saturday but garnering independent thoughts.

Also, anyone who may have bought a 1300GS and if they got rid of it, what they moved to.

TIA

First bike suggestions

I'm looking for a first bike and want something like the Rebel 1100t. I love the cruiser/touring mix and the naked look but figured the 1100 would be too much power for a first timer. I've looked into getting a 500 and adding saddle bags and a wind deflector but was wondering if there was something else that meets what I want without needing mods. I care about reliability and durability (realistically I'm probably gonna drop it a few times early on). I don't want to go too expensive cause it is my first bike. Any recommendations?

How to find dream motorcycle?

I currently have Suzuki Bandit from 1995, which I bought cheap as “learning how to drive” motorcycle. Now I feel ready to find an actual machine. I am rather naked / chopper fan but lately drove a bit Kawasaki Z900 and it was fun. So now i actually do not know what I want 🫣 I am rather short so I cannot drive everything and had my eye on older models of Honda Rebel but now I am thinking about something more sporty. How did you chose a motorcycle?

R3 to an R7

So i have an R3, had it and been riding it for 11 months, i love it no regrets, but i want something bigger, thing is i have an A2 licence so i cant ride bigger bikes but I saw this R7 which i rly like. Now some are telling me to put a restricter limiter and some said that its okay if i dont put one as no one cares. My question is should i get the R7 w the limiter and wait until i get the big licence? Or should i stay w the R3?

Is the Suzuki GSX-8S overkill as a first bike on an A2 license? (vs SV650 / Hornet 750)

I’m currently getting my bike license in Europe and trying to figure out what my first ride should be.

At first, I was pretty set on the Suzuki SV650. It’s impossible to ignore because everyone recommends it, it’s bulletproof, and there are tons of them on the used market. But looking at things now, the GSX-8S is really tempting me. It looks way more modern, the chassis is supposed to be a lot more stable than the old SV, and the tech features like the quickshifter and ride modes seem like a huge plus.

My main worry is whether the GSX-8S is just complete overkill for a beginner on a restricted 47.5 hp limit.

I’m wondering if the weight and the tech are a bit too much to manage starting out, or if the A2 restriction just kills the engine's character anyway. If anyone has ridden a restricted GSX-8S, how does it handle low-speed stuff and daily riding? Does the modern chassis actually make it easier and safer to learn on than an older SV650, or am I just paying a premium for stuff I don't need yet?

As a backup plan, I’m also looking at the Honda Hornet 750 since it’s in the exact same bracket.

Would love to hear some feedback or experiences from anyone who has dealt with these bikes under restriction.

Motor bike selection

So topic is that im going to buy a bike. I love naked bikes and not supersports mainly because of the sitting position. My choices right now are the cf moto NK675(brand new) , the Honda CB650R(used with 2k km, 2025 edition) and my final choice is the Zontes 703T( i know its not a naked bike but i really like the overall package). So my question is do i go with the nk because its brand new its prooven with full extra gadgets? Do i go with the quality of the honda?( im in love with the sound of the 4 cylinder and my friends told me its a great bike to ride in terms of quality and performance… or do i risk it with a completely new bike which will be available on July and basically its a copy of Yamaha Tracer?

Got this beauty 2022 Royal Enfield Hunter 350

It’s been about a month since I bought this beautiful Indian motorcycle at an incredible price, and it was totally worth it. It’s my first motorcycle — not a 100cc or 150cc, but a 350cc beast. Riding it is an amazing experience, and I absolutely love my decision to buy it. I named her “Majesty.”

Beginner bike for Highway use

I want to buy a motorcycle that I would be using for primarily highway use. I visit my friends frequently in another state and the ride is about 200 miles.

I also would like it to be sports style and if they exist be more fuel efficient centered.

With my 5 minutes of research its said that over 500cc is what I want generally and I would also like a bike that is easier to work on (I have tools, I already work on cars both personal and professional).

I cannot even legally ride one yet so Im not jumping the gun just preparing and is FB market a good place to get used ones or should I stick to dealers/credible buyers?

First bike

Hi all!

Looking for my first bike, got the MSF course in 2 weeks and would like to time everything right assuming I pass.

Some background:
Live in a city that the only way round is mostly highways that are 65-75 MPH
Looking for something more long term, I don't want to have to feel like I need to buy a new bike in the next few years
I'm not a speed demon or looking to go insanely fast
Will be something I'd like to take to small errands, eg. going to the gym or going out to grab some food for myself as I work from home
Likely will end up riding 3 hours away once in a while to meet friends
I'm in my 30s
5'8 and 180

Would love some suggestions. I'd prefer new as I want to keep it for a while and I'm not looking to have to spend more time on maintenance than riding when first learning. I will be doing a ton of drills at low speed and plan to get the sliders for whatever I get

I've been looking at the Ninja 650 or the R7

Specifically these as I'd like to one day learn to try track but also want something decent that I can ride till it dies (eg. I still have a 2011 Impreza that I've been driving for years)
Apart from the color of the R7, I really like the idea of having cruise control.

Already have a helmet and plan to get full riding gear. (SEDICI Sistema 3 Carbon)
