Happy late birthday to sweet Maryellen! She looks perfect in Blaire’s garden outfit. I think Maryellen’s hair is so perfect for her

I contacted American girl to exchange her but I wanted to make sure that this wig isn’t just a normal Isabel thing. It seems very off center.

Firstly this was published in 2010 so not that long ago …

I’ve attached some screenshots of some of the more problematic pages I’ve seen … first off addressing the book discussing “wendigos” they are not meant to be discussed or spoken of, as it can call the spirits in. As an Cree person I’ve been taught to never speak of our stories about spirits or discuss them. And it seemed as though these stories were heavily white washed and portrayed more as folklore and silly legend than respecting our stories. I found it quite shocking to have Indigenous stories used in a way that mocked them and had little girls play games to them when not a single Indigenous character was present in this book… It made me upset to see terms like “Indian” and the kids making fake Indigenous regalia from BURLAP SACKS and playing pretend Indigenous ?!

To have published this book while claiming to have carefully crafted Kaya’s stories seemed extra upsetting.

As this story clearly was not made along side any meaningful Indigenous consultation.

Thoughts on this book ?
