Doll Parts
here's my lil artist's statement i made at a small showcase a few months ago, the prompt for this anthy piece being "concealment"-
This piece uses paint for the ornate stamps, paper for all the outfits + the girl, and a wooden-esque picture frame to encase it all.
The usage of the paper doll motif ties into how women of Asian descent, blur the lines of personhood and objectness- "playthings" through the Western lens. The clothes surrounding her, (immature as a school girl, subservient as a bride, etc.) signify the many personas women put on to appeal to said gaze.
Historically in North America, Asian women are seen as exotic and delicate, like fine goods imported from Asia, dehumanized as mere cliches that deviate from the "normal". Vulnerability is on full display here- who are you when you have nothing to conceal yourself with? Being percieved for your true self feels as though you are naked, stripped down to your core being.
