Rule 5 Reminder

Our rules are clear.

We do not allow profit oriented or clout focused self-promotion, marketing or market research.

We have a rule specifically about this. Spammers, clout chasers, marketers: you are not welcome here. If your only purpose in posting here is to promote a product, you’re not welcome.

Users seeking to share their own truly informative content can seek approval from the mod team if unsure. This includes things like personal blogs or instructional videos or tutorials. These are generally welcome and add value.

If you are a brand rep, designer, inventor, marketer, influencer or app developer and you post promoting your product or cause without getting our consent to do so, you will be permanently banned. This includes posting affiliate links when recommending products, which will be removed.

It is exceptionally rare for us to approve brand or research requests, as this sub is a curated space for real humans to get peer advice.

It is not a portal to moneymaking and we already grapple with the many facets of overconsumption in the organic conversations held here by users.

Very occasionally we have brands ask if their representative can participate to answer product questions, sometimes in reply to specific post discussions. Such accounts have user flair to identify them as being approved by the mod team. There are currently two which are rarely active on the sub.

We expect brand representatives to identify themselves to us BEFORE participating in the sub in any official brand capacity. We do not allow this type of participation to tip over into active brand promotion (including suggesting “have you tried…”).

“Viral marketing”, whether well disguised or not, is not allowed either. If you see these please report them. A recent example included a solid toiletries brand.

These can be subtle. A good sign this may be the case is if the OP posts and then never engages in their own comments section.

We do rely on reports and mod mail to alert us to these issues. We are committed to keeping the sub as spam free as possible.

🇸🇪 Sweden in early May

I forgot to take photos of my packing AGAIN.

I had posted a while ago with a suggested packing list and got some really helpful advice.

Length of trip was five days. Bag was Decathlon 23-27L roll top.

My original consideration for this trip was that it would be personal item only. Due to some mistakes with CPAP paperwork (Ryanair require a specific medical letter which went astray), we ended up with one cabin bag each way, which meant I did not need to pack in my nylon crossbody and could instead take my normal backpack (which is too tall for Ryanair’s personal item length, even smushed).

This worked out. I have a shoulder injury which I managed to aggravate just before leaving so I was happy to be using my preferred bag. I’m not sure this was worth £50 but shit happens!

Anyway, what I took… we stayed with friends and it absolutely would have been FINE to pack in my smaller bag. I’ll list below what I would have cut to make it fit and still been happy with.

Worn on flight
- Black wide leg jeans
- Black cropped tee
- Altra running shoes (for my running programme)
- Green wool cardigan
- Green waterproof rain coat

Packing method notes
I used bundle wrapping on this trip as an experiment and overall, I liked it. My clothes were less wrinkled than with brick folding. It fit comfortably and there was no risk of my underwear or socks popping out. The bundle went at the bottom of my bag.

I took less “other stuff” because we could use chargers and “big” toiletries from our friends (they specifically offered this, I know this is an Etiquette Thing for some). Had this been different I’d have made sure my wife and I split and shared toiletries more deliberately.

Notes on why I would happily cut some things
The weather was really too wet and windy for a decent chunk of our trip. I am a sun optimist and wanted to have another bottom option, but in reality I only wore my skirt one day out of five, and I sort of “made” myself. I was comfortable but our friends thought I was insane walking around Lund with bare legs. Thankfully I run hot.

I absolutely didn’t NEED the long sleeved top but I was happy to have something a bit smarter for the day we did a bit of touristing and dinner in Malmö. That said, what I missed and I’m not sure how I managed this, was packing a pair of wool socks. I ended up buying some very nice ones in Malmö because we got piss wet through. This was a mistake rather than an intentional decision. My feet were damp but warm!

Despite my feet getting soaked that one day, my Altras dried overnight. I could have coped (grumpily) with just having them. If I’d had to take a smaller bag, my Birkenstocks would’ve been an obvious cut. I was happy to have them and I truly dislike and find it sometimes painful to wear the same shoes day after day, but of all my shoes my runners are the best bet for repeated wear.

Other comments
I had plenty of space in my bag for souvenirs. I bought a book, some tea, my fancy pants wool socks, some postcards, and some dadlar which are dried dates flavoured like your favourite vintage sweets. The salted liquorice and pineapple/lemon are especially delightful.

Overall the big winner of the trip was my raincoat!!! I’ve criticised this coat in this sub before for its poor stitching, but the actual waterproofing aspect is solid. I’ve seen it in shops recently and they all look better sewn than mine which makes me think it was a dud? Anyway props to the extremely affordable but not very packable Mountain Warehouse Hannah coat. I was not familiar with your game until this trip.

I could have - but would not have wanted to - cut my running gear. Yes. I could have skipped a run. I walked more than enough to make up for it exercise wise. But it was really important to me so early in my programme to be disciplined about my run schedule. And I am so glad I was because I got to know Lund much better on my slow ass thirty minute walk-jog!

Article: Should you pack lighter for the planet?

I am currently travelling and found this article an interesting read.

I am curious if climate considerations enter your reasons or approach to both travel overall and specifically packing?

The “moral licensing” term stood out to me here, but so did the fact that taking less with you is one of the main ways you can mitigate your individual impact after choices about frequency, connections, class of ticket, or flying at all are accounted for.
