Questions for those with their own practices and multiple locations...

I own an estate planning / probate practice outside a Top 25 market. Had some questions to those who have opened multiple locations of their practice.

  1. How did you decide where to locate the next location? I'm looking at space but when I find a possible match I am parallel checking my competition in the area via Google search. Are there other things to consider in that regard?

  2. What are some mistakes you made in the process and/or tips for finding success?

  3. Is your other location / locations smaller than your main office? I am looking to just have a space to meet for plan signings in person on a preset slate of days per month. I don't intend to have it staffed every day so I'm looking for the nicest space for the month while weighing the square footage given the amount of use I'll get.

  4. Did you have any issues with Google My Business profiles, SEO, etc.? Any tips on that is also appreciated.

My Mom and Dad are nearly 80. Given their prior health, I've been surprised at how quickly my Mom has shown mental decline. My Dad is a mess physically (back / arthritis / hip) but fine mentally.

It's just my older sister and I. I'm 51, she is 55. About ten years ago she moved to another state and is now about 3 1/2 hours from my parents. I live 15 minutes from them. My sister is very very politically activated with Trump in office and generally everyone in the family feels the same way. We're just not as activated because it's not our sole cause in life.

Since my sister moved away my Mom and Dad have pretty faithfully drove to see my sister, but primarily to see their granddaughters, who they adore. But pretty often they come home and tell a tale about how my sister got suddenly mad at them so they had to leave that day or had to head back to their hotel early because of an argument. I have seen these arguments and it's pretty much frustration that my sister has about how my parents are. Frustrations that I sometimes share, but that I've mostly learned to accept. I think everyone finds their parents annoying in some ways.

But the abuse by my sister has been consistent and increasinly random. About a month ago she called my Dad up and started yelling at him because he's a white male Baby Boomer and he and his fellow Boomers have ruined the world, etc. My Dad was wrecked by this random call out of nowhere...he served in Vietnam after being drafted and while having done well for himself, is a tremendous human being, as is my Mom. They have always been great parents to my sister and I.

My sister has skipped Thanksgivings and Christmas for years, most other holidays and get togethers. I think she had previously visited home once in about five years.

That was before this weekend. My Dad had an emergency surgery on his back. I took off work on Friday and took my Mom to the hospital. My sister, amazingly, announced she was coming down. To her credit, she stayed with my parents until leaving this morning.

That's when I got a series of screeds by text about how Mom is confused, she's recommended XYZ person as an in-home caretaker. I was thinking, whoa pump the brakes but I'll talk to them about it. I then nicely reminded her that she had some catching up to do and that she had really really hurt them over the years with the verbal abuse.

We went back and forth over text and I just said look if you want to help out and visit, that would be great. It would be positive for Mom and Dad and put less stress on me as I have a business and a year old daughter. But I did say only if she stopped the verbal abuse. Not only because that hurts them but you can't say boy they need help and then do that to them. Now in their own house. I thought that was a basic point. So she responds pointing fingers back at me and taking it personal. She seems to be of the opinion that she can unilaterally wipe the slate clean and instantly catch up with years of non-action due to her suddenly appearing this past weekend.

Again, I'm for that in general but they're still making their own decisions and that's how it's going to be until they can't. Because that's how they have told me multiple times they want it.

My sister is now clearly pissed at me and I'm thinking I did what I had to do...that she can't show up and be verbally abusive. Just can't happen.

Thoughts?
