Waterproof lav mic and TX for surfing footage?

Hey all,

I’m a sound recordist who lives on a surf coast and have often been asked how possible it would be to mic up talent while they’re surfing.
Info for non-coastal peeps - usually surfers are around 50-200m away from a land-based camera, and semi-submerged (and we all know how well RF travels underwater) - so range is a big issue. The TX’s would have to have an internal record option for full redundancy.

I have a Sound Devices 688 with SL6 + Betso Sharkies - so range is decent. Running Lectro SRC receivers with a mixture of SSM’s and SMWB’s, with both COS11s or 4060’s. Maybe Lectro WM’s would be the go as they’re waterproof? I don’t have digital receivers so can’t use the DSSM’s, and they’re only waterproof for 30 minutes.

I’d probably spend $1000-2000 to trial run one channel setup, but if the workaround is a Rode Wireless Go Pro with internal recording then I’ll go with that - just obviously ruins my range idea.

Anyone done this before, and have any setup, or mic or TX recommendations?

Sound Devices ARX2 and SL6 + 688 integration issue

Hey all.

I’ve recently bought an ARX2 for my boom receiver (with A20 txs). The ARX2 is powered by the SL6, and audio passes through the SL6 to the 688 but I can’t control it via the 688 menu like I can with my Lectro SRC’s - even though the ARX2 is much newer and by the same manufacturer as the SL6.

Is this by design, being that the recorder is a “legacy” 688 or is this a firmware issue and it should work?

What exterior mic would you choose to go with a 416 (that cannot be another 416)

I’ve got a Sennheiser 416 for exterior shots, and I want to get another exterior mic. I occasionally use two booms on exteriors but in this case I don’t want to match the mics.

I know this is personal preference, so what would YOU go for? Budget is around $1500USD. I like the CS3e or the 8060.

Convince me not to buy the ARX2 receiver and A20 TX’s for my booms.

I know this is definitely a personal preference to do with the gear I’ve currently got and my standard gigs etc.

From what I’ve read, the A20’s sound the best, have internal 32bit recording for redundancy, and the range is quite good.

Why should I not get them, compared to say Wisycom?

Using phonetics to record a foreign language to your own - what’s it called?

I’ve been asked to work on a short film and they’re speaking English and Croatian. My English is perfect but I cannot understand a word of Croatian. That being said - I’ve heard of a technique where you use phonetic sounds on the script to follow the foreign language.

What’s this method called?

Astral A20-TX Battery Life

Hey all, has anyone used the A20-TX on a boom with Eneloop batteries? Whats the battery life like?

Deciding whether to buy the lithium batteries recommended or just stick with AA eneloops. I’d be transmitting and recording, plus 48v phantom for the boom.

Just getting phantom power noise when mounting Sanken CS-M1 to Ronin 4D ext XLR plate. Anyone else done this before and had it work?

Have tried different cables, different ext plates, and no luck, but it works with other 48v mics, and the Sanken works when plugged in to a mixer/recorder - just not when plugged in to the camera.

+48 switch is toggled on.

Best boom mic transmitters with 32bit internal recording?

Looking at Wisy or Sound Devices/A20 stuff for my boom mics. Anyone got any thoughts or experiences with them?

Why or why not?

Would you just include one mono track instead of dual mono L and R mix tracks?

I’ve always included L and R mono mix tracks for my projects but it seems everyone’s different.

Not sure if anyone else has this issue - when I use TX and record on one of my SMWB’s there’s a weird low volume oscillating sound in the track. It’s only on the track being recorded by my 688 - not the onboard MicroSD card on the SMWB. The sound goes away when I stop onboard recording on the SMWB.

I’ve got an identical model SMWB with exactly the same settings, bootloader and firmware and it doesn’t have this issue. Anyone else?
