12 week old in car seat
This may just be a phase we’re going through, but in case it’s not, I wanted to check and make sure we’re not accidentally doing something that’s hurting/stressing our baby.
Our 12 week old used to LOVE riding in the car, which is amazing bc we’r currently on a several months long road trip for my husband’s work. He would almost immediately calm down when we put him in the car seat, and if not, he was chill within a couple minutes. Not just dozing off because of the movement, but often alert and happy and curious. It was awesome.
He’s a BIG 12 week old. At his last well check about 2 weeks ago, he was 24” and 14lb 10oz. He’s grown sooo much in his little life, and he’s rapidly outgrown the infant inserts in his car seat, so we’ve gradually removed them—we’re now just down to the shoulder cushions on the straps, because when we took them off we found that the straps were digging into his chonky little neck.
But the thing is, he now HATES being in the car/car seat. He wails the entire time… from pretty much the second his back touches the car seat. And the change sort of seems to have coincided with the final pad removal (the one around his head and neck).
Is it possible that, even though size-wise he has graduated from his newborn car seat attachments, age/development-wise he still needs them? And the crying is his way of telling us he doesn’t feel safe/secure in his seat anymore?
He’s also going through a “leap” right now and is very needy (which, when we’re not driving, I’m happy to oblige), so that may just be it… just wanted to do a safety check in case! Thanks!
Some additional context:
His neck is pretty dang strong, but it still freaks me out that there’s not extra support around it.
I find it very hard to regulate his temperature in his car seat. He’s often much warmer than I like (sweating on his back and neck), but then I’ll put fans on him, and his extremities will be freezing!! He could also just be frustrated about being too hot or too cold, so if anyone has any great tips for that, that’d be great.
Thanks again!
