Restarting climbing and getting serious this time. Any encouraging words/advice?

I climbed for fun last summer while I was home from school and would mostly go to my local gym with my little brother who did classes there and knew people. I talked to everyone through him, and that was mostly employees that we would say hello to in passing. I was always nervous about talking to people on my own, especially because I was just a beginner climber who would only do auto-belays and very easy boulders. I get insane imposter syndrome and really felt like I didn’t belong there and had no right to talk to anyone.

I stopped climbing when I went back to school and was going to return to climbing this summer, but I got some rollerskating injuries that prevented my return. I’m all healed now and am feeling more motivated to finally get stronger like I’ve always wanted, so I’ve reactivated my gym membership and am willing to drive the 40 minutes to the nearest location to my school. Since I’m traveling so far, I want to make sure it’s worth it.

Because this is a different gym than the one near my house, I won’t be going with my brother. None of my friends climb, which means I’ll be going to every session alone. That’s making me really nervous. I don’t know the lingo, I’ve only done very basic boulders, I have no strength training or endurance, and am overall very out of shape. I feel out of place and so awkward talking to people at the gym even though I would love to not be a loner for long.

I’m feeling excited, overwhelmed, nervous, motivated, and every emotion possible. How should I navigate this restart? I’m looking to go to the gym hopefully three times a week and do some strength training and cardio (roller skating, lol) in the days where I can’t drive the 40 minutes. If you could go back to being a beginner, what would you want yourself to know? Give me all that info!! I want to feel less nervous about climbing.

Also, how long did it take for you guys to start seeing physical muscle definition after regular climbing? Just wondering as that is a motivator.

Thanks in advance, I lurk this sub a lot and love how supportive this community is.

Back on skates after spraining my ankle in May!

I posted on here about how I fell and sprained my ankle last month and asked how long I’d probably need to stay off my skates. I was devastated when m
the comments and my doctor all said four weeks. A few days ago, I felt ready to put my skates back on and loop around a basketball court near my house. Today, I was planning to fully return by going on a bike path, but the road crossings were too rough so I just played around in a nearby parking lot. I’m so glad to be back!! No more pain in my ankle, though it isn’t as strong so I’m gonna work on restrengthing it! (Ironically this injury has healed much faster than my sprained thumb, which still gives me problems three months later 😑😑)

What’s in my everyday bag ~ 21 year old marine biology student

I’m an outdoorsy marine bio student but this is not my field work bag! My field bags are much bigger and have much more stuff 😵‍💫 this is just the bag I take with me everyday. Can you guess where I’m from based on this? 🙈

Left to right: bag, wallet (my wallet is lowkey huge and I’m looking for a new one), prescription sunglasses, glasses rag, airtag, Narcan, nail file, pads, airpods, orca patch I got on vacation, 1960s peace button from antique store, Aquaphor in Vaseline tub, pink Vaseline, Dramamine, orca pen for writing, eyeliner, gym membership card, strawberry cough drops.

First ever ankle sprain 🤕

I moved out of college for the summer a few days ago and yesterday I decided to wear my new skates around the house to break them in. I was literally right about to take them off so I could walk my dog but decided to dance a little first. All of a sudden I fell, felt a pop, and my ankle hurt so bad. My mom got me ice for it and then I still went with her to walk my dog because it didn’t hurt too bad. I just thought I’d rolled it.

I slept with it elevated but today I woke up and it
hurts much worse. I got a brace for it at CVS and have been icing it more. It’s not so bad that I can’t walk, but it does hurt a bit to walk. I’m so sad that this happened literally on my first day of summer break. I was so excited to skate almost everyday this summer and I was planning on learning tricks and spins. Now this is a major setback. I took another skating injury last month, but that was just some whiplash and a sprained thumb (that’s still healing), so I was able to skate again after only a few days. To anyone who has dealt with this injury before, how long did it take you to get back on wheels? Feeling very sad today.

I’m currently on my old C7s from 2020 and the boot is beginning to separate from the sole. I told myself that if I could stick with skating while in school, then I’d let myself upgrade my skates. I think now is that time.

I mostly skate outdoors so I’m looking for a suede boot. My feet are like medium width and I’m looking for a supportive boot in the ankle. Which one of these is better for this criteria? I know Jackson is a beloved brand by figure skaters (particularly Jason Brown, my goat), and SureGrip is beloved by roller skaters. Which one of these do you guys think is better for what I’m looking for?
