I had a tasting with some friends. We tasted plain with a little maldon salt. Of the following varieties, the winners are:

Cherry- midnight snack for sweetness+depth, pink champagne for pure sweetness.

Other contestants: Sweet 100 Scarlet sunrise- looks beautiful but not particularly tasty. Kind of crispy. Atomic grape- a close runner up Green zebra cherry- was not good

Big cherry- copper olive. Bright, tangy and sweet.

Other contestants: Sweet prince- full red flavor in a large cherry Cosmic burst - no complaints but just not as good as copper olive Jaune flamme- very sweet, a close call, but skin a little tough. Blush- very good!

Medium- persuasion. So nice and red/pink with a round complex flavor, not very acidic.

Other contestants: Thornburns Terra cotta- wins for sweetness alone Paul Robeson- a favorite dark Darkstar- not as good as Robeson Early girl- a steady basic Lemon boy- very light flavor

Large- Mr stripey. So sweet, tasty, fruity, wonderful.

Other contestants: Lithium sunset- was also good just not as good Lucid gem- tasty, had better texture but not as sweet Pink Berkeley tie dye- a close second Berkeley tie dye- also close Harvard square- not as good as BTD Sart roloise- light flavor, very little acid Purple Cherokee- a solid fight!

Berkeley tie dye review

This has always been a favorite of mine. This year is no different, I love the bright fruity acidic sweetness. When I grew in San Francisco I preferred the pink Berkeley tie dye, down in Los Angeles this one seems better. The pink is very sour this year for some reason.

I tend to pick these earlier and let ripen more inside as I find they get mushy fairly quickly if left on the vine.

Thornburns Terra cotta, lucid gem, lemon boy

My bigger ones are starting to come in! I tried my first Thornburns terra cotta- delicious! Very sweet and concentrated tasting. Lucid gem is one I’ve grown before and love, very bright and fruity. And lastly lemon boy which is good but I probably wont grow again, a robust and early plant but the flavor is too light for me.

Growing in Los Angeles. Planted end of march.

Whole Foods meat and specialty

Happy with both but I absolutely have no plans for chicken livers. Very happy with the cheeses!

Copper olive- first ripe review

My first two copper olive are ripe! They look nothing like the wild boar photos- they are very much just a solid dark red/purple with dark green/blue shoulders. The inside was more colorful. They were large cherry/saladette size. But they were still very tasty! Very sweet and earthy at the same time.

The plant is still small, the furthest to the right in the third photo. So far disease resistance growing in 10b Los Angeles. Not a lot of major disease or pest pressure where I am. We have a long season so hopefully is just keep going!

For reference, this is how wild boar describes them:

1-1/2 oz. – 2 oz., Indeterminate, Mid-Season (around 80-85 Days to Maturity). Very, very Productive. Ability to set fruit in a wide variety of hot and cold conditions. Average Plant Height is 5-6 feet tall. Green, Yellow, Orange, Red Topped with Blue-Black Anthocyanin Splashes. This tomato boasts as many flavors as it does colors. Each color has its own flavor element. Sweet, Tart, Rich, Savory. Dependable production in varying conditions along with its colorful looks, great flavor and outstanding post-harvest durability make it a Winner! Excellent durability without sacrificing quality. Holds ripe on the vine up to a week, post-harvest self-life can be weeks. This does well above average for hot and cold tolerance for a tomato.

First large tomato- lemon boy

Growing in 10b Los Angeles. I transplanted this lemon boy 3/15. Going to wait a little longer before cutting in. This is my first time growing this variety. It ripened before my early girl planted at the same time, but the early girl is growing to be a much larger plant and has more but smaller fruit.

Early girl is the left most plant in the second picture.
