First time Leica owner

I’ve wanted to own a Leica for a long time, and at 33 I finally got the chance to pick one up. I shoot a lot of film and have a small home photo lab and darkroom setup, so I’ve heard plenty of great things about these cameras over the years.

As soon as the opportunity came up, I went for it. Can’t wait to put my first roll through it.

Was it common for DVDs to be mastered from analog tape sources in the late 90s and early 2000s?

Hello everyone. I’ve been collecting original DVDs lately, mostly concerts, music videos, and some films from the late 1990s and early 2000s. One thing I’ve noticed is that many of them look like they were mastered or transferred from Betacam tapes.

I say this because I can recognize a lot of the typical analog tape artifacts and occasional dropouts. It made me wonder whether early DVDs were commonly sourced from analog tape masters during that period, especially for music-related releases.

In my collection, most of the concert and music video DVDs where I’ve noticed this are Sony Music releases. For films, the DVD of The Pianist stands out because it contains quite a few visible Betacam artifacts as well.

Since these are original retail DVDs and not bootlegs, my theory is that maybe some releases for the Latin American market for whatever reason were sourced from Betacam copies instead of the original digital masters.

I’d love to hear from anyone who knows more about DVD mastering workflows from that era.
