This is my 1840s evening gown photographed at the beautiful Newport Rhode Island mansions. It's made of a blouse weight silk shantung, internal seams were done on my machine and all external finishing work was done by hand. If you can see it, I did it be hand, and if not, I did it by machine. The dress is fully self drafted, and is worn over a shift, pantaloons, corset, corset cover, and several petticoats including a corded one to creat that lovely bell shape to the skirts. The crinoline years might take the cake for me, but the 1840s is a close second!
My Roman matron look and bonus "lady of ill repute" look! The white under Tunica is made of cotton, and Stola and Palla are both sill double georgette. Everything was self drafted, but the shapes are all extremely simple, just a bunch of rectangles. The outfit is also 100% hand stitched, which again is not as impressive as it seems with the simplicity of this ensemble lol
1770s-1780s middle class ensemble, absolutely love how it turned out! I even made the hat from scratch! Jacket pattern is from Scroop Patterns, worn over stays pattern from Red Threaded. All other items (shift, petticoats, false rump, ect) were self drafted. Jacket and skirt are made of wools from Fabric Mart. Shoes are American Duchess, stockings are Penny River (found on Etsy). Pictures were taken in Maine by my wonderful father. Internal seams were done on machine, but any externally visible work was done by hand.
I have recently fallen in love with Tang Dynasty clothing, especially the high Tang qixiong ruqun style but I have several questions.
how do you pronounce the following terms? I have found very few videos of people saying them. -Qixiong -Ruqun -Daxiushan -Hezi -Pibo -Banbi
Is it appropriate for me, a strictly white person with no Chinese link, to participate? So long as I do it with as much research as I can find and wear them as properly as I can manage
Going off question 2, is it ok to make my own? My main hobby is historical costuming, and I have largely focused on cultures that I descend from, but I really want to branch out into others. There are so many beautiful things in human history I've never even approached creating! Is it ok to make these myself, or would it be more appropriate/respectful to purchase from a Chinese creator?
I would really appreciate any/all opinions!
