Any Cat sitters in here?

I’m a gardener who has been brainstorming on how to keep the cash coming in as we get into fall and winter, and my brain landed on Cat Sitting. I have owned cars for years and LOVE meeting new fur babies.

Is there anyone in here who has cat sat as a service and can give me a glimpse of what your operation looks like?

Thanks in advance!

Garbage not picked up?

Even though garbage pickup was supposedly extended the garbage on my street hasn’t been picked - Thursday is my regular pickup day.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are they going to come today?

Freedom Convoy at TireLab yesterday?

Drove past on my way home and buddy from the North End's van was there along with a crowd of people, some waving signs.

If TireLab gave them permission to use their land, then I'm never taking my car there.

Landscapers - how do you price your mulch jobs?

I run a small gardening business - so small I don't have a truck yet. I figured I could still offer mulch jobs by contacting supply yards for delivery and then doing the labour. I can fit at least one wheelbarrow and a couple of pitchforks & hard rakes in my hatchback, so I can transport the tools needed.

My questions are:

  1. how much of a markup do you put on company-supplied mulch?
  2. are there any other line items i should consider charging other than mulch and labour?

thanks!

Anyone else anxiously/obsessively checking the forecast?

I was feeling a little better yesterday, the rain days were downgraded to < 5mm each, with a nice 50-60% chance of actually happening. When I woke up this morning, the Monday forecast was upped to 10-15. Now it's 15-20mm with a 70% chance.

My landlord hasn't yet been able to get someone over to survey the damage or discern what foundation repairs are needed. So looks like round 3 may be coming for us, right on schedule.

does anyone know the history of the old house that used to be behind Collier Street?

I don't know the address since Google doesn't show it anymore, but street view from 2012 captured the house and property before it was demolished. I figure this property overlooking the canal valley, hidden away behind more modern homes has an interesting past.

Here's the streetview link of the old mansion

Thanks for any info!

Looking for lots of native prickly pear

A client of mine wants to do a mass planting of prickly pear in their sun drenched front yard. I contacted Willowbrook Nurseries and unfortunately they don’t carry any at all this year. Is anyone aware of anywhere I could grab a bunch of PPs at a decent price in or near the Niagara Region?

are there any small maintenance business owners in here? started gardening side business, need advice

sorry if this is the wrong sub, but here goes:

I'm an experienced horticulturist. after years of procrastination I finally took the plunge and started a small garden maintenance business this past April - with nothing but my hatchback and personal collection of gardening tools including a new dewalt pruning saw. Its great so far, I have 5 clients that I'm working around my main job. Thanks to my evening shift I'm able to squeeze in 2-3 hours a week at each. So far it has mostly been invasive weed management (Star of Bethlehem is now the bane of my existence), and restoring neglected spaces. I have a mulch job coming up.

My issue is determining what I should be pricing my services, most local businesses don't publicly post their rates and seem to have different rates for different tasks. can anyone give me a little bit of insight as to how they determine their pricing?

Due to low overhead (no truck, no lawn equipment, no employees) I originally went with a $40/hr flat rate for everything. After getting my first 3 clients and locking them at that rate, I've since raised my price to $50/hr, which is still well below the Landscape Ontario 2022 charge-out rate for a horticulturist. Am I selling myself short? Or am I charging too much?

in search of bark chips

I’ve been thinking about getting some bark chips for my own backyard as well as a clients, but I’m having trouble with my search. Does anyone know where I could find Bark chip mulch around St Catharine’s?

All I can find are wood chips

Gardening service starting up

I recently started a part-time gardening business to supplement and hopefully eventually replace my current job. I graduated from Niagara's horticulture program 10 years ago and worked for several companies with properties ranging from estates to compact urban lots and commercial sites.

I'm starting up with basically no budget - just my hand tools, my electric blower, and personal vehicle(a hatchback). While this limits what I can offer service-wise for now, it means I have very low overhead, and I can pass those savings on to you.

My general rate: $50/hr

My services:

  • general weeding

  • invasive species removal (by hand, no chemicals)

  • pruning

  • annual planting

  • spring cleanups

  • edging

  • soil / mulch (delivered by local suppliers, spread by my company)

  • lawncare possible if you have a lawnmower on site, but as a horticulturist my main focus is helping you in your garden spaces.

I currently have 3 clients in addition to my job, and am looking to take on 1-2 more, depending on the scale of the work needed. If you need help in your garden, please let me know.

Panoramic sunroof malfunction

Hey guys, new to this subreddit. I have an ‘18 Elantra GT Sport, and yesterday on my way home from work my sunroof got stuck half-open. After some googling I found a way to override the switch and managed to close it with power. It seemed to close just fine, so I thought that was all that was needed to reset. Today however, i can’t get open AND the shade cloth is stuck open.

Has anyone else encountered this “glitch”? There’s plenty of grease on the tracks, no visible debris, no clicking from the motor. It can’t be a fuse since I got it closed with power. When I finally managed to close it, it sounded perfectly functional.

Thanks for any help!

Hey everyone, I messed up the blade on my gas mower thanks to a hidden pole stump in the tall grass. Blade tip is bent pretty bad - maybe it could just be bent back into shape, but I'm planning on using this mower for my small business now. Any place in particular that offers good deals on service?
