A Strange Human Settlement in Western Sahara

Coords: 26°54'21.4"N 10°44'18.0"W

The inscription "14" makes me think it's a military installation, but I don't have any more information.

1955 P2V-5 Nepture aircraft wreckage near Gambell, Alaska. Shot down by two Russian MiG-15 aircraft.

63°39'37.66"N 171°43'32.05"W

I stumbled upon this island during my morning Google Earth stroll and started digging into the nearby town, Gambell. I found the story of this P2V-5 Neptune. I couldn't find the coordinates for it anywhere, but with enough research and manual search effort I was able to find the aircraft!

---

A little summary:

On June 22nd, 1955 two Russian MiG-15 opened fire on an American P2V-5 Neptune aircraft. The American aircraft and crew took considerable damage, with a fire starting on board. The pilot put the aircraft into a dive for cloud cover before leveling out and discussing a crash landing on the island of St. Lawrence with his crew.

On impact, rocks tore through the aircraft releasing and igniting fuel, culminating in a fireball which moved through the cabin and burned the entire crew. Despite bullet, shrapnel, and burn wounds, all 11 crew members were able to escape. Alaskan natives and members of the local national guard witnessed the crash and were able to aid in a successful extraction via small land vehicles and boats.

In 2023 the National Guard hosted an award ceremony in Gambell to honor of the local rescue effort where the last surviving member of the rescue team earned a heroism medal. Family members and descendants of the other rescue team members were also awarded and recognized.
