I’ve been working as a plumber for twelve years in the suburbs of Milan. I’m writing this from a burner account because if my coworkers read this, they’ll think I’ve lost my mind. But what I pulled out of a pipe two days ago is making my stomach turn.

A young woman called me to her third-floor apartment because her boiler was throwing an error and making a bizarre, wet sucking sound. I disconnected the flexible hot water pipe leading to the bathroom. There was a major blockage inside. I pushed it through with my plumbing snake, and this greyish-pink lump of flesh plopped right into the basin. I honestly thought it was a skinned rat or some massive build-up of hair and limescale. Then, the thing started to unfold.

It had six short legs made entirely of cartilage and, I swear to God, on its underbelly was a circular mouth lined with microscopic, hard white teeth. It slipped down the sink drain in half a second with a wet, squelching sound I’ll never forget. I acted like nothing happened because I didn't want to give the poor girl a panic attack.

But the worst part happened yesterday. She texted me saying the hot water is fine now, but for the past two mornings, she’s been waking up completely exhausted, freezing cold, with a strange, perfectly round, purple bruise on the sole of her right foot.
