Step 2 during away Ortho rotation season!!!

I want to take Step 2 during away Ortho rotation season, but I’m worried about whether I’ll realistically have enough time/energy to study and take the exam.

For people who took Step 2 during an away rotation:

  • Was it manageable?
  • How intense were your away schedules?

I’m aiming for a strong Step 2 score, so I don’t want to hurt my performance either on the rotation or the exam. Would appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks!

Has anyone here received an away (visiting) rotation at Vanderbilt for orthopedic surgery this cycle?

I applied but haven’t heard back yet, and I’m trying to get a sense of the timeline and whether invites have already gone out.

I’m applying for orthopedic surgery and I’m really interested in doing an away rotation at a specific program. I already applied through VSLO, but I haven’t heard back from them yet.

I do have a bit of a unique situation — I previously reached out to a physician at that program for an unrelated reason, so there is at least some level of prior contact (not a close relationship, just a professional interaction).

Would it be appropriate to message them and express my interest in the program / ask if they could offer any guidance or help regarding my away application? Or would that come off as unprofessional or overstepping?

I’m trying to balance being proactive with not wanting to make a bad impression.

Would appreciate any advice, especially from people who’ve been in a similar situation or residents/attendings who have insight into how this is perceived.

Thanks!
