Polygraph Modular - AUv3 Mac Synth Plugin

Polygraph Modular - AUv3 Mac Synth Plugin

Polygraph Modular is a stereo polyphonic AUv3 software synthesizer for macOS — and I need TestFlight beta testers! I've been working toward this for over 10 years — long enough to ship a non-modular synthesizer on the Mac App Store along the way. A modular software synth is where the architecture was always headed.

Most software modular synths try to look like Eurorack on a screen. Polygraph Modular doesn't. Most software modular synths inherit the monophonic, mono signal architecture of hardware Eurorack or other modular systems. In Polygraph Modular, stereo and polyphony are baked into every module and every connection from the ground up.

Polygraph Modular can be used with any macOS DAW that supports AUv3 plugins (most of them, including Logic Pro, GarageBand, and Reaper). The included host app, however, is full-featured and is intended to be used in live performance and general purpose.

Polygraph Modular makes no attempt to mimic Eurorack hardware forms, instead leveraging native macOS UI — popovers, tab views, drag and drop, etc. This makes patches much simpler to create and understand. Multiple 'planes' are supported for grouping of modules.

Monophonic patches are simple to implement as well, by reducing the voice count to 1 and optionally adding slew to slide between notes. There are many mono and polyphonic presets to use as is or as starting points.

Polygraph Modular supports over 130 modules across 50+ types.

  • MIDI (1.0 and 2.0)
    • Pitch (standard + MIDI 2.0 Attribute #3 Pitch 7.9)
    • Velocity, Control Change, Channel Pressure, Note Number, Sustain pedal
    • 1–32 Voices (default 10)
  • Audio Oscillators
    • Waveforms: Triangle to Sawtooth, Sine, Pulse (via comparators)
    • Modulation: Frequency, Waveform (Triangle-Sawtooth), Phase, Hard Sync
  • Nonlinear Operators
    • SineWarp
    • Comparator
    • Discretizer (decimator)
    • Overdrive
  • Filters
    • Butterworth Lowpass, Bandpass, Highpass
    • Formant (vocal effects)
    • Variable Slope
    • Peak, Notch, Allpass
  • Modulation Generators
    • LFO (Triangle, Square, Impulse)
    • Envelopes (ADR, ADSR)
    • Sequencer
    • Sample and Hold
  • Logic, Control Signals
    • Threshold and Delta Impulse
    • One Shot
    • Clock Divider
    • Sample Delay
  • Per-voice Effects
    • Chorus
    • Flanger
    • Phaser
  • Global Effects
    • Delay
    • Reverb
    • Enhance (harmonic exciter)
  • Microtonal Support
    • EDO Discretizer

...And more.

Try it out via Apple's TestFlight (macOS Sequoia, Apple Silicon required).

If you find significant bugs or contribute a patch worth adding to the Presets, I'll give you the release version for free.

Val Holyle vs Melissa Bird

Although I voted for Melissa Bird, I have to breathe a small sigh of relief that Hoyle won the primary. Bird's progressive platform was very appealing, but a tarot-reading lay preacher could have been decimated by negative campaigns from the right.

Next time we need a progressive candidate to challenge Hoyle that wouldn't be so easy to caricature.
