Corvallis is even more of a ghost town than usual this summer

I don't know if its just me, but it seems like Corvallis is way more empty this summer than in past years. There were barely any people at the 4th of July festival for the fireworks, I was able to park right near it. In past years, the roof of Sky High was so busy that they were at capacity and had to count people, but now it was just a small crowd. Even downtown this weekend felt really quiet. The Open Streets event also had very few people as far as I could tell.

Does anyone know if there is a Corvallis Free Stuff subreddit?

I’ve done some searching but cannot find anything. That said, I can’t imagine there isn’t one.

I love the PDXBuynothing sub but it’s too far away :). Would love something local. Please point me in the right direction if one exists :)

I have some extra freeze-dried refried beans. They are really good, and I recommend them to anybody, even if you have plenty of food. Let me know if you want some, free.

Heat them up with water, and they really do taste like Mexican restaurant quality refried beans. The brand is Basic American Foods. They are "best by" November and we probably won't use them by then. PM me if you could use some. I have enough to make a few quarts of refried beans.

I also have lots of pasta that's been on my shelf for a while. PM me if you could use some.

Edit: I'm going zzz for the night. Thanks

Anyone in need of free teen/YA sized clothes?

Lots of pajamas and shirts, some pants too. Nothing is worn beyond use, most of it is light wear. I was going to donate them to goodwill but I realized that they'll just sell them. If you are in need, dm me, first come first serve. 🩷 happy 4th of july

Where to get get my Asian hairs cut?

We're new to the area, it's getting hot now, and my hair is inching steadily down my face.

Both of my two previous hair-cutting folks (both of whom cut my hair for several years in different cities) recommended that I try and find somebody who understands "Asian hair" because apparently it doesn't behave the same as Caucasian hair (tl;dr–it starts sticking up when you cut it too short, and I've been told that it attacks people when cut).

I'm an older male and not in need of anything super-stylish. I just need something that grows out well over time, and doesn't take much upkeep (I mostly work remotely anyway).

Open to recs for individuals operating w/ or w/o a full-time business. Thanks in advance.

Flock camera on walnut

Yesterday my friend mentioned that there was a new Flock camera on walnut, and it’s on the deflock map. Did anyone else notice this? I haven’t heard much discussion of it and wasn’t aware of any town hall meetings regarding it. I linked to the map.

Will my laundry get stolen?

Just moved to an apartment complex in south town and they have a shared laundry facility. Trying to decide if I need to babysit my laundry or not... What is everyone's experience? Is it safe to leave my laundry? Thanks and happy Fourth!

Edit: thanks for the replies! I do have a couple friends who have stuff stolen out of washers/driers in other places, but I’m glad to hear it’s not a widespread experience.

Mysterious backyard berries

Any idea what these berries are?

For context: our home was built in 2002. The plant producing these berries was part of the original landscaping. Over 2 decades ago, my wife transplanted it to our backyard so that the deer would stop attacking it. This year it started flowering for the first time ever, and then produced these berries.

Homicidal Deer in North Corvallis

I live near the north Co-op. Last week my partner, baby & dog went on a walk & were chased home by a deer! We did not provoke the animal, it charged the moment we turned around to avoid it. I had to run screaming with the baby in my arms while my partner kicked, scaring the animal off.

Tonight, we heard bloodcurdling screams from the dog during dinner. We ran to the backyard to find him being trampled by another (maybe the same?) deer. We shot at it with the BB gun and threw furniture, It ran off but quickly returned to the yard after we went back inside. It gave no fucks. Dog is OKAY.

Wtf is going on? Coincidence or has anyone else had experience with the deer being more aggressive this season?

Also, what the hell can we use for defense in the city limits that’s better than a BB gun? I’m nervous now to hang out in my yard alone or walk the neighborhood with my newborn.

Baby Sitter Options

Hello all,

My wife and I are new parents here in Corvallis. We have a 13 month old daughter. My wife is stay at home for now but we are hoping to find a regular sitter or even a nanny. A friend of mine found a nanny that was with the early childhood development program at the university but that was years ago.

Does anyone have suggestions for finding sitters or a nanny?

Silver Prius

If anyone knows someone who drives an old silver Prius and lives in the apartments near Circle and Walnut, tell them to get the fuck off their phone while driving. She almost hit my pregnant wife head on at 40mph on Walnut because she was texting and went into oncoming traffic. If I lose my wife and child because you won’t get off your phone, I will make sure that the rest of your life is spent behind bars.

A New Smash Burger Rivalry in Corvallis: Killer Burger vs. Gotcha Burger - The Corvallis Advocate

It’s Gotcha vs. Killer. It’s a burger, fries and a coke for about $10. Which one does this Advocate reporter, a somewhat foodie-ish creative writing student prefer – which one gave her the craves for a return visit – the answer may surprise you.
