Fungi and veg in harmony

Most build a raised bed to grow vegetables.

I built this to grow fungi first.

Beneath the soil lies a hügelkultur bed packed with hardwood logs once colonised by reishi, turkey tail, shiitake and colonised wood from our local forest. My hope is that, as these fungi continue to feed the soil, they create a thriving underground ecosystem where beneficial fungi and mycorrhizal networks flourish.

Why? Because fungi produce compounds that plants cannot make themselves, including ergothioneine—an extraordinary antioxidant that plants appear to acquire from healthy fungal-rich soils.

My goal isn't simply bigger harvests. It's to grow vegetables in living soil that has been shaped by fungi, allowing nature to do what it has done for millions of years.

Healthy fungi. Healthy soil. Healthier food.

Laetiporus sulphureus

Eburicoic acid

(a lanostane-type triterpenoid) is a key bioactive compound in Laetiporus sulphureus (Chicken of the Woods) . It shows anti-inflammatory, gastroprotective, antioxidant, and potential anti-atherogenic effects in preclinical studies ,more research needed

Mushroom extraction process

Most medicinal mushroom extracts are made using a “one method fits all” approach.

Typically: Hot water first → alcohol second.

Efficient for manufacturing. But not always ideal for chemistry.

Why?

Water extraction can swell polysaccharides and create a gelatinous matrix, potentially reducing penetration of later alcohol extractions and limiting recovery of delicate alcohol-soluble compounds.

Different fungi contain very different compounds: 🍄 Reishi → triterpenes 🍄 Lion’s Mane → aromatic compounds & diterpenes 🍄 Cordyceps → nucleosides & sterols

Yet many products use the exact same extraction process for every species.

Advanced sequential extraction takes a different approach: ⚗️ Solvent polarity progression ⚗️ Species-specific extraction logic ⚗️ Fraction preservation ⚗️ Recombination of multiple fractions into a broader spectrum extract

Closer to phytochemistry and traditional spagyric philosophy than mainstream supplement manufacturing.

“Dual extract” does not always mean “fully extracted
