Ailany's rise in popularity fascinates me. From outside the top 1000 to #14 in just 2 years is wild. The state data was released today and yes, it's number one in Maryland and top 10-20 in many others. There are only a handful of states where it didn't crack the top 100.
In Maryland prior to 2022 there were only 4 or less born a year (possibly 0)
2022 there were 5
2023 there were 6
2024 there were 73
and 2025 there were 225, beating out Charlotte and making it #1.
If you combine spellings (Ailani, Ailanny, etc), it's top 10 nationally.
Are there any other names that had such a huge surge in popularity in such a short amount of time? The spelling Ailani has had a more typical rise through the charts (joined the top 1000 in 2016, is #168 now), but where did the Ailany spelling come from and why is it now more popular than Elizabeth and Ellie?!
**edit- since a lot of people aren't familiar with the name, it's pronounced eye-LAH-nee, it seems like it's most common with Spanish speakers, and it potentially originates from a Hawaiian name (though oddly enough it's like, NEVER, been used in Hawaii). -lani names in general are on the rise, but the Ailany spelling seemingly came out of nowhere and is now a chart topper.
