Would you work 70 hour weeks for 1 year if it got you to $80k?
I’m graduating college soon with $45k to my name, mostly thanks to my current job (night shift, 30 hours a week, $25k post tax). I’m currently applying to fellowships and jobs that would cover my expenses (I live extremely frugally) and optimistically provide $10-15k in savings. I don’t have a degree in anything that would make me anything above $40/50k in my first year of working. If I kept my current job and put all my yearly earnings into my savings and investments, I could get to $80k net worth by the time I’m 24, and then hopefully $100k by 25.
My job has been easy enough to balance with college, but obviously a 9 to 5 will be a lot more demanding on my time and energy than classes (which I schedule around my job/sleep). The only reason I’m thinking of keeping my night job is because it’s so chill and the company I work for is great. It’s basically a remote desk warming job where I have to be logged on from 2 am to 8 am and do tasks. As long as I stay logged on and am active on my tasks, I can literally do almost anything I want (workout, cook + meal prep, clean, study, etc.). This job has been a blessing for me during college because of how chill the tasks and my coworkers are.
I’m very money-focused right now, and my instinct is to just go for it so I can save as much money as possible before I turn 25, but I wanted to get a broader perspective. Doing this would mean working from 2 am to 8 am, then 9 am to 5 pm, every weekday. Again, I’d be able to get a lot of stuff done during my night job, but I would still only have ~1 hour not working on weekdays. Would it be worth working 70 hours every week for one year to save $35 to 40k (versus $10 to 15k)? Should I just focus on doing the best I can at my first post-grad job? Do you think l will just be miserable at a certain point?
