I DID A THING: Steam Controller Box Mod

Inspiration from u/shadyallie here. This sub doesn't allow videos or galleries so more details and video posted here on Imgur.

Mods are:

  1. Clear coat (Rust-oleum 2x) which was lightly sanded down with 2500 grit paper (the coat's causing the slightly distressed look)
  2. A drawer pull as a handle using screw-in rivets
  3. Velcro PC cable ties repurposed as locking mechanism
  4. Paper hinge reinforced with electrical tape followed by cardboard colored tape.

Wanted to the clear coat for a bit more longevity and protection from dirt and finger grease. Was a bit worried that the coat would cause discoloration. Immediately after I sprayed on the clear coat, it looked VERY distressed and took on a darker hue like pictured here. After about 24 hours though, it lightened. A little bit of a distressed look remains but I like that.

Was intent on using as much stuff I already had on hand as possible. That's why the attaching mechanism is made of Velcro PC cable ties. There are 4 cable ties in total. All of them have the soft (loop) side facing outwards. The ones on the underside are glued and taped to the inside after I routed them in though holes I dremelled in the back. The ones in the front are routed in through slits and wrapped/hooked around a metal rod I repurposed from a hanger. I used no glue here so I that I could replace these if necessary. The hook (rough) side of the Velcro is only used on these front cable ties, so would be the ones that could need replacing.

Honestly, I spent a while set up the controller for use with Deadlock, doom and the desktop. But then, just as I was about to start actually playing, I got obsessed with (repurposing / reusing) the box. Must have been a cat in another life ...

Steam Controller Impressions: Linux and DPad Discussion, Issues with Steam Input

Just got the Steam Controller today. I am not a reviewer, but I know there are some questions people have been asking (about the DPad and Linux functionality) which have not been properly addressed. I did notice an important issue about steam input that I wanted to talk about. Mentioning my points below, but the video gives more detail.

Video: https://youtu.be/jmow3xu1s-g?si=0XQMh32R7h1_dTTL

Linux

  • the connection and setup is pretty plug and play.
  • works within Weyland, as well as with or without game scope.
  • inputs are passed in through steam input (issue discussed later) all buttons are sending in input / are detected. Gyros and touch pads too.
  • the select button, steam button and the three dots button don't work properly in big picture mode.

DPad

  • generally, probably going to be better for cleaner inputs.
  • crisper or clickier than the d-pad for the scene deck, which I felt was mushy. Not as clicky as mouse buttons.
  • all the directions feel distinct. HOWEVER, the right direction and the down-right direction are less distinct than, say, the left and down left direction. This is because of the way the controller is physically shaped. The plastic underneath the D-pad is sloped and curved.

Steam Input (a significant issue, but a software issue)

  • in some games, such as Fatal Fury and Deadlock, as well as in the desktop controller layout, it is not possible to configure steam input. It is not possible to configure steam input. Configurations don't get applied even though they save as a custom layout. In fact, any attempt to reconfigure Steam Input in these locations actually resets Steam Input configurations on other games where Steam Input is actually configurable.

Will be creating github issue later today
