Travelling to Penang in two weeks, and will be entering Malaysia there. I am looking forward to exploring and eating my way around the island!

Read some horror stories from 3-4 months back about two hour queues etc for passport control, but also articles after that time that autogates for foreign passports have opened since. Can’t find anything recent, so what’s it like now in May 2026?

I won’t be eligible for autogate as a first time visitor to Malaysia, but hopefully more people are these days and the manual line is more manageable. Arriving around 5pm, in case that makes a difference.

I guess it is what it is, and I’ll see on the day, as a chronic over thinker I just want to mentally prepare myself.
