Watched something in the theaters? You’ll now be able to track that too in Cinephile 🍿
I’ve just added this feature where you can say whether a movie was watched in the theaters. This is on a per-watch basis; you can watch a movie 3 times at home and twice in the theaters for example; all of that is tracked.
And of course I added a statistic for it! (Disregard my solo trip to the movies in this screenshot, this is all test data 😅… In fact, I haven’t watched The Odyssey yet 😭)
Now if only Apple would decide to stop ignoring me and approve the previous update that’s been waiting for a week so I can upload this one, that’d be great….
Waiting for Apple Review…
This time has been probably the worst wait time yet… since last Friday morning that I uploaded Version 3.2 and it hasn’t been reviewed yet.
Actors voting, GIFs, and so many improvements, all waiting for almost a week now. It’s especially frustrating, bc of the speed at which I like to ship features is just not compatible with Apple’s laid back approach.
This whole week has made me reflect on the future of Cinephile as a mobile-only app, and I’m more and more convinced that I should launch a full web version as well so I crank up updates whenever the fuck I want…
At any rate, in the meantime I wanted to bring to your attention a new Instagram page for the app that I’d like to invite you to:
https://www.instagram.com/getcinephile?igsh=eWhwNHdzNzl0b250
And lastly, I also started to become active on Threads; opened an account a while back but never really used it. I intend to be more active now, so if you’d like to, give me a follow and I’ll follow back ;)

Just saw this gem pop up on the App Store. To say that it made my day would be a massive understatement 🤩❤️
Brace yourself for the next update 🍿
Apple should be approving Version 3.1.2 in no time; meanwhile Version 3.2 is ready and it's PACKED!!

Profile Sharing
Working on a little something here. You'll be able to share your profiles straight from the app. The links generated are of the form https://www.cinephile.dev/@<your\_handle> (in my case for example, https://www.cinephile.dev/@cinephile_official ). Of course, once you get the sharing functionality from the app you won't need to type this manually; I'm just sharing this now because you can actually try it, this is live on the landing site ;)
Favorite Characters Feedback
Hey all,
I'm working on this feature now, but since I never used TV Time myself I need to understand the user's expectation for this feature better before fully implementing it.
Other than-picking your favorite character in a movie/episode in the summary prompt that pops up when marking as watched, and seeing the percentage distribution across all users, what else do you expect from this feature? Do you also expect to see this percentage distribution every time you visit this movie's/episode's details screen in the cast & crew section? Do you expect this to pop up somehow in social feeds?
I need your help on this one, because it's something I've never used myself, so I want to get this right for those of you who have been requesting this.
Cheers,
Mario
Version 3.1.2 Shipped 🚀
All about import options on this one:
- Letterboxd
- Sofa Time
- Tv Time’s official GDPR data WITH COMMENTS!!
Other nice quality of life improvements:
- You can now hide the episode’s thumbnail until watched.
- In the social feeds, when you translate someone else’s post or comment, if you reply your message will be auto-translated to the OP’s language. (I’m really proud of this one!)
- You can now easily search for other fellow cinephiles, either by handle or name.
- Favorite movies / shows showcased in your profile are no longer ranked by default. That decision is up to you whether to rank them or just showcase them in no particular order.
Cheers,
Mario
🚨 PSA: TV Time Comments Import Is Coming!
Yes, you read that right! The upcoming update adds support for the official GDPR data import, and will bring in even your comments into Cinephile!! More details on the update coming soon; I should be uploading either tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest 🍿
Version 3.1.1 Out Now 🍿
The timeline and “Releasing” screens now properly show tv shows premiering and also digital release dates for movies.
The favorites section of your profile has also been upgraded so that you can pick your top 10 out of all favorites to showcase in the front page.
I’ve added the translation button everywhere in the community section, not just in posts + comments but also reviews.
There’s a lot more coming up over the next updates, as I continue to improve and add highly features such as favorite character voting, community reviews showing up in movies/shows details screens, and much more. Stay tuned!
Cheers,
Mario

Version 3.1 Shipped 🚢
This update introduces a TON of improvements. Here's a breakdown of some highlights:
- Navigation in threads continues to improve. This update should start making the community section really feel more like a vibrant social media feed, with much better navigation, and better handling of the feed (no more having my welcome post always appear when sorting by popularity 🙄). This "popularity" has been relabeled to "trending now", and takes other things into account beyond just likes and comments. It also refreshes daily. My welcome post, and any future announcements I'll want to make, will appear as a dismissible pinned post that you can eliminate after seeing it once.
- There are new options for keeping always the tab bar (not hide it when scrolling), as well as to have the rating prompt after marking something as watched appear automatically without having tap on the popup. Note that by default the popup is still on (I very much prefer it), but the automatic sheet presentation is now an option you can choose if you so desire.
- Speaking of the popup, you can now do a lot more here, like mark as favorite, write a review, and VERY IMPORTANT, can navigate straight to the comments section form there to leave your two valuable cents ✌️
- The "Releasing" section in the Home tab can now be configured to show only releasing movies, shows, or episode releases (or all of course, that's the default). A similar fix has been added to the "Schedule" (which has been relabeled to "Timeline" to better convey the meaning of this screen). In the Timeline, for future releases (from today forward) you will only see relevant media (watching episodes, wishlisted / for later movies, etc), while going backward in time you will see everything, since it's a timeline of all releases in your library.
- There are a LOT of privacy options now in your profile settings. You can now choose not just what to share, but WHO to share it with.
- The app has been fully localized to Turkish and Arabic.
- Fixed Trakt's bullshit yet again...
Whew... ok I'm going to sleep. It's 2am and it's my little girls's birthday, so I'm out!
Cheers,
Mario

Version 3.0.1 Shipped 🚀
This update is the first major refinement of the community features, which immensely improves navigation and adds some QOL tweaks.
No more having to navigate to Profile and then Feed. I've completely streamlined the approach. The tab has been relabeled to "Community" (still showing your profile picture) and now at the top level you can switch between your profile screen and the community feed, and the choice sticks. The way I see it one would 99% of the time have the feed open and occasionally check some stuff in their profile.
The feed now supports not only posts, but you will also see other users ratings and reviews (this is all completely configurable; you *can* choose to see only posts and hide ratings and reviews or vice versa... the choice is yours).
Over in the profile view you now also show your heatmap, and can much more easily see followers and following users. *ALL* of this is user-configurable; you'll be able to hide followers/following count and users, just like you can also completely hide the heatmap... Every single thing shown here is completely up to you what you share or don't share.
Have a great rest of your Sunday everyone!
Cheers,
Mario

Support for photos and gifs in comments
Hey all, just wanted to clarify where I stand with photos and gifs in the new community feature.
Initially at least, photos will be a Premium-only feature; this is because I really need to understand whether the server costs is something I can subsidize for free users. I will extend this to all users later if I see that the math works out... this is all testing waters at the moment.
Gifs support will be added in the next version or two, and that *should* be included for everyone, since I've found a promising provider that shouldn't incur charges on my end. I'll give you an update on this later.
Thanks for your support and consideration!
Cheers,
Mario
Get ready to claim those handles! Cinephile's community is ready for launch!! 🚀
Hey all, I'm excited to announce that Version 3.0 of Cinephile (the biggest yet!) has been completed and will be uploaded to Apple tonight 🤩
I don't know long they'll take to review the update, it's a chunky one. Plus the app is transitioning from being fully private to having a social platform, so I anticipate some pushback from Apple.
IMPORTANT!!
For those of you who haven't been keeping up with the news and are worried that I'm turning the app into a full blown social media platform, fear not! As I promised from the beginning, *all* social features in the app are completely opt-in. There's a toggle in the Settings screen which, if turned off, the app will look to you as private as it does today. The Profile tab and comments sections will be completely invisible to you.
I am VERY excited to open the platform to social features. Please keep it civil and let's continue to be nice to each other. Note that I have ZERO tolerance for any kind of abuse and self-promotion in comments, so I will have the ban hammer always ready. From the interactions I've had with folks in this community I have no doubt that we're going to build something special together though. If you see rotten apples trying to ruin our fun, hit that Report button and I'll take care of things.
Obviously the social features are the star of the show, but this version has a LOT more improvements as well. I'll let you discover by yourselves ;)
Looking forward to seeing you all in Cinephile's feed!
Cheers,
Mario

Spoiler heads up in comments?
Hey all,
Just doing one final polish run before pushing to production the new community features. I wanted to hear your take on something.. Currently I have placed a "Spoiler" button when you're typing a comment so you can mark that comment as a spoiler. Someone else reading the thread would see the comment hidden (see second screenshot in the slide) until they tap to reveal.
This is all fine, but my worry is that it may be somewhat superfluous? I for one would never to go to the comments section for a movie/show/episode if I haven't watched it, so I would expect ALL comments to be potential spoilers...
Should I just remove this, or leave it for whoever wants to use it??
These bangers keep popping up on the App Store 😍 Can't thank you enough guys! 🥹 (P.S. the community feature will be ready in less than a week!)
Woke up to this SUPER review today 😍 Thank you for spreading the love! 🥹
Version 2.8.1 Shipped 🚢
Too hot to step outside, so I'm just grinding at my desk shipping more updates 🔨
Coming up in this version:
- New widget with upcoming calendar for movie/show/episodes releases (configurable, long-press the widget to choose what to show)
- New "Haven't Started Yet" section in the Home queue, plus a revamped "Haven't Watched In A While" section. The latter can now be shown in either expanded mode (which matches the rest of the queue sections) or in compact mode. Compact mode is similar to the one you currently have, but improved to allow to mark an episode as watched right there.
- Infinite scrolling in the new Schedule screen, with the option to show All Time releases. Same thing also for the “Recently Watched” screen.
Cheers,
Mario
