Solo founder selling to small online stores, how do I get past one-at-a-time outreach?

i run a small software business that sells to small ecommerce stores. cold email and instagram dms have actually worked for getting customers, but it's slow and every customer is basically one conversation at a time

for those of you who sell to other small businesses, what helped you get known more broadly? partnerships, content, trade groups, referrals, something else?

also my product is seasonal so i've got a short window each year, if anyone's dealt with that i'd love to hear how you handled it

How did you get your Shopify app in front of merchants beyond the App Store?

solo dev, app's been live on the shopify app store for a bit and i've got a paying customer. so far cold email and instagram dms to small store owners have actually worked well for getting individual users, but it's slow and one at a time

curious what's worked for others to get broader awareness. things i'm wondering about:

  • how much does app store listing optimization (keywords, screenshots, reviews) actually move installs early on?
  • has anyone had luck partnering with agencies or theme devs?
  • content/seo, youtube tutorials, shopify community forums, worth it or too slow?

my app is seasonal (holiday related) so timing matters a lot, if that changes anything. would love to hear what actually worked vs what you wasted time on

Would you use a tool that automatically re-themes your store for holidays?

Made a proof-of-concept this weekend — a script that detects the date and swaps your site's colors/banner/decorations for whatever holiday is coming up (Halloween, Christmas, BFCM, Valentine's so far), then reverts automatically when it's over.

Demo here, no signup needed, just click through the holidays: https://matthewmigs.github.io/holidayify-demo/

Genuinely asking before I build more: is this a real pain point for anyone else, or something you'd rather just do by hand? What holidays would actually matter to you if I built this out properly (Shopify app, more themes, etc)?

Running 3 jobs (HVAC, restaurant, lawn care) tough me more about finding costumers than any marketing course

I run a lawn care business on the side of my full-time HVAC-job and a few restaurant shifts a week. For a while I thought of all of it as just “paying the bills” while I tried to build something bigger.

Turns out the customers and people I already knew from those jobs were my best source of business - not strangers, not cold outreach.

A lawn care client of four years mentioned a work problem he’d been dealing with for years. I ended up building a fix and he became my first costumer for a separate thing I was working on. After that, I started doing it on purpose: did a job for free for a new client, asked 20 minutes of their time instead of payment, and picked up a second customer that way.

If you’re running a small business and also working on something else, don’t write off your existing costumers as unrelated. They’re often the easiest people to actually talk to.
