Interesting Liver Enzyme Results on Nardil and B6

Hey everyone - posting this for reference in case anyone finds it helpful.

I restarted Nardil in March. I get my liver enzymes tested very regularly for blood work monitoring after I went through chemo last year. Here are my results and timeline on Nardil.

Note that I restarted Nardil and at the same time started supplementing vitamin B6 (P5P) at around 35-50 mg a day. I was under the impression this would help with muscle cramps.

December (on Wellbutrin) - ALT and AST were 20 and 22. Discontinued this in February.

March (1 week after starting Nardil) - ALT and AST both elevated >100

April - ALT and AST remain elevated over 100

May - AST dropped to normal range but ALT remained elevated at 102.

June - Discontinued B6 P5P for ~10 days and retested and ALT dropped to 63. This was 10 days after my blood test where it was elevated at 102.

I will continue to monitor but I've discontinued all B6 supplements for now. I did read a study where P5P increases hepatic load of hydrazines but I can't find it now. I would love if someone could share it here.

Calling all runners on MAOIs - Nardil or Parnate

Hello! I'm on 30 mg nardil and this is something that has been better/worse at times throughout my time on nardil (+/- 10 years) but i know is directly attributable to the medication as I've had several stints off nardil and the issue resolved completely. I'm considering switching to parnate because of this as well as bloating.

I'm a runner, around 25 miles per week, in addition to about 60 miles of cycling a week. This ONLY happens with running - no other form of exercise. My calves will cramp and tighten increasingly to the point of it basically feeling like a pulled muscle that forces me to discontinue running for 5 days to a week and slowly ease back into it. It's painful but mostly it interrupts my training and prevents from me from doing longer runs.

It's the most recurring, annoying side effect I have on the med, aside from edema and fluid retention in the legs/face. Running is very important to me for my mental health and in conjunction with other exercise, allows me to maintain a low dose of medication. I've tried electrolytes, calf sleeves, P5P B6 (seemed to help temporarily but also led to elevated liver enzymes on my blood test), warm ups, strengthening, etc. Nothing seems to get rid of it.

  1. Does anyone else deal with this on Nardil and have any fixes?

  2. Does Parnate cause this as well?

On Nardil, Considering Parnate - Thoughts?

Hi everyone,

Would love to get some feedback from the group. I was on anywhere from 15-45 mg of nardil for ~10 years. I discontinued last year, felt great for about 5 months, went through cancer and chemo and ended up back on it as of March. My long term dose is around 30 mg and even at that dose, I am currently dealing with elevated liver enzymes - my doc has flagged it as a concern but just monitoring for now. With that said, I'm considering just switching to Parnate to manage side effects.

Other side effects that I've always struggled with on Nardil - limb heaviness, leg edema, afternoon fatigue, 'moon face' of sorts, all of these even at a low dosage of 30 mg. I often just feel a bit dull/muted.

One of the most annoying for me is the leg tightness/cramping. I typically run 20-25 miles a week and cycle about 60 miles a week. Nardil is making this very hard with the muscle tightness/fatigue and it never really went away last time.

Is parnate better for these things? My endurance exercise routine is very important to me post-cancer and I don't want to have to peel it back because of my medication. I struggle with depression mostly, but also social anxiety (less so).

Would love input from people who have been on both and what your experience has been in terms of energy levels, physical side effects, etc.
