Bought my first saxophone!

I’ve been playing piano and double bass in a couple of weekly jazz bands the last few years and have been curious about what life outside the rhythm section would be like.

About a month ago a friend lent me their old alto sax that had been sitting in their garage for 8 years or so. After a few days of struggling to get even a few decent notes I started being able to put some scales together, and now a month later I can stumble my way through a few simple jazz heads (All of Me, There Will Never Be Another You, Fly Me To The Moon) and love playing it.

Since I have to eventually give the alto back I bit the bullet and decided to get a student tenor sax (I’ve always preferred the sound of the tenor). Found a great deal on this Schagerl 355 Advanced Student tenor and got it this morning.

I was initially worried that the tenor was going to be harder to play than the borrowed alto but from the very first notes it was a dream to play and sounded great. I’m now realising that the alto I’d borrowed was a) probably not the best sax, and b) hadn’t been maintained very well, making it harder to play than it needs to be.

Anyway, very happy to have joined the club and am looking forward to really getting stuck into learning this thing.
