Beginner question - help!

TLDR At end.

Alright, so let me preface by saying… I have wanted to play saxophone since I was a little girl starting band at the very first available age (don’t recall when that was). My mom couldn’t afford one, especially not knowing if I would actually put in the work so we bought a used clarinet from a swap meet for $60.

I ended up eventually switching instruments as I couldn’t make my horn reach the high C very well - honestly in retrospect it was likely partly due to the instrument probably needing repair.

Anyway, now I’m 40 and our kid is starting piano lessons. I wanted to start sax when he started music to hopefully be inspiration for him to not give up. I originally was talking to my husband about financing a YAS 480 as the 280 was being recommended but the 480 wasn’t much more than the 280. He has flip flopped so many times on it. Came down to “you can get a sax if you settle for a cheaper horn”. Okay, fine, reasonable. I show him a used Yas-26 for about $630 (currently 10% off deal running puts it at $566.99. He said “I was thinking a cheaper horn” to which my response was “you’re not going to find cheaper unless it’s basically a toy.

TLDR:
Is $566.99 a good deal on a used Yamaha 26 that I should jump on? It’s through a reputable source with a 45 day return policy. If I do buy it, what do I need to know about buying a used sax?

Is playing on a 5 that odd?

Basically the title, I play alto on a five and apparently that makes me a freak of nature.

Yes I am referring to reed strength.

How much is this worth??

I don’t play saxophones, I do not know anything about it but I wanna sell it. The mechanical parts move they all open and close. Only spotted one missing pad on the part.
cork part appears worn.

Recent Jam/Gig

Been feeling really grateful lately. Got to play with a lot of people I look up to. Getting gigs and comments on my playing too. Not too convinced about the level I’m at, but happy with my general progress and opportunities lately.

Here is a clip I got of me playing Stablemates with my friends.

Recommendations on purchasing a used or cheapish new bari?

I've never ever bought a bari sax, but I need to because my school constantly keeps giving me leaky instruments. I'm an intermediate player, and I was thinking about getting a used YBS-52 because that's the best most rich sounding and feeling saxophone I've ever felt. But I have no idea on how to navigate the used or even new market. I need a horn for marching band, Concert, Jazz, and I've been trying a bunch of classical or dramatic music. Any help would be really really nice.

Bought my first saxophone!

I’ve been playing piano and double bass in a couple of weekly jazz bands the last few years and have been curious about what life outside the rhythm section would be like.

About a month ago a friend lent me their old alto sax that had been sitting in their garage for 8 years or so. After a few days of struggling to get even a few decent notes I started being able to put some scales together, and now a month later I can stumble my way through a few simple jazz heads (All of Me, There Will Never Be Another You, Fly Me To The Moon) and love playing it.

Since I have to eventually give the alto back I bit the bullet and decided to get a student tenor sax (I’ve always preferred the sound of the tenor). Found a great deal on this Schagerl 355 Advanced Student tenor and got it this morning.

I was initially worried that the tenor was going to be harder to play than the borrowed alto but from the very first notes it was a dream to play and sounded great. I’m now realising that the alto I’d borrowed was a) probably not the best sax, and b) hadn’t been maintained very well, making it harder to play than it needs to be.

Anyway, very happy to have joined the club and am looking forward to really getting stuck into learning this thing.

C melody Sax questions

So I recently inherited my grandfather’s C melody saxophone from the 20’s, as well as an older clarinet. I know he had the sax fixed up semi recently as the pads all look to be intact and it only has one sticky key. I have been a musician my whole life but I’ve never played the saxophone before. I spent a while just playing around with it and it still sounds beautiful even with me playing it! I plan on taking it to a music shop near me to see if they can get it cleaned up and just to check it out.

Here’s what I’m trying to figure out:
What kind of fingering charts should I be looking at? I’m not sure if there are different fingerings for alto/bari or for melody.
When I’m looking at said fingering charts, should I be transposing between keys?
Should I just take some lessons for saxophone instead of learning myself?

Thank you for your patience, and I apologize if these are silly questions!

what do I clean my case with

I was gifted an old case from a friend, and the inside is like fur almost and is really soft but in some areas like around the spot for the neck the lining has sort of gotten crusty (not wet at all, it’s a pretty old case) from use- what is the best stuff to clean it with? is there anything safe enough that won’t damage the inside while still getting rid of that texture? I mostly just don’t want other peoples spit on my instrument lmao

What is this weird spot on my mouthpiece it doesn’t go away when I clean it?

Basically, I play tenor and I recently got the one I’m gonna be renting from my school over the summer. It came with an extra mouthpiece, so I decided on to clean them both but the one that says Yamaha on it is my main one(and it’s had this spot for a couple days other for reference) I just cleaned them both and it’s not coming off? What is it?

Just read “Ode to a Tenor Titan” Michael Brecker

I started Ode to a Tenor Titan thinking I’d casually read a few chapters on my trip. Instead, I finished it in the airport terminal trying not to ugly cry in front of strangers!

Phil Barone: where to find?

Hi! My husband has a big milestone birthday coming up, and he’s always wanted to own a Phil Barone soprano (unlaquered.)

I have been calling used shops and antique stores for days and days up to several states away and have come up completely empty handed.

Does anyone have advice on places to call or to look at online? I’ve tried eBay and reverb already. Are there any similar places to go?

Thank you!!

Tenor saxophone suggestions

I am a student playing the school's tenor saxophone, I started and own my own alto sax but I switched to tenor around a year and a half ago. I've made good progress on tenor and have switched to it. I'm looking for a student/intermediate tenor to purchase, as well as mouth pieces and other things. Right now I'm also playing a student alto.

My tenor as of now is a selmer, I like the way it plays and it does it's job. I am looking to keep going with tenor through my highschool and hopefully college career. Nothing extremely expensive as I would probably be paying for it myself.

Lick from “Now’s the Time” from Charlie Parker tips?

I posted a few days asking about how to further my knowledge in jazz and ability. I don’t have an Omnibook yet but I found a transcription of a nice sounding lick from Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time” it took me 5 minutes to learn and after some repetitions and listening to the original a few times I got multiple runs I was happy with (this being the best and most accurate to Charlie Parker imo). If you could leave some tips or criticisms that’d be amazing. Just graduated to my junior year of highschool and have 5 yrs of experience for reference.

Could use advice on altissimo

So, I have finally started getting my altissimo notes to come out, but do have a lot of confusion on two points. Firstly, I am having a lot of trouble playing overtones even when I am reaching the altissimo notes themselves. I see several YouTube videos on mastering overtones in order to hit those notes and even have Sigurd Racsher's book, but I am just not getting my horn to hit those overtones. My confusion is that I still hit the altissimo notes, so my question is do I really need the overtone practice? Trust me, I still practice them, get frustrated and then just play as usual and finger those alt notes.

Second question is I understand the fingerings for altissimo are secondary and the primary goal is the emboucher and voicing, apparently (after watching a lot of YouTube videos on altissimo). Most of those videos say tongue position is the key and lately, I amazingly enough find myself hitting the right intended notes regardless of my fingering, so feel like I am finally doing something right. What I would like clarification on is if I am really hitting those and not fingering them, does it sound like I am on the right track? For example, I wanted to play alt C and ending up fingering alt B, but the C came out, so it was the right note, wrong fingering. Can I hear your feedback on this?

Alternate Altissimo Fingerings

Currently learning Muczynski’s sonata and was wondering if anyone had any fingering suggestions for the top of this run? I’m pretty new to the altissimo range and am struggling to work out what would work best, Thanks! :)

As the title says, I wanna get louder on Bari. We just got our sheet music for next years marching show and I wanna play as loud as possible without sounding like straight doodoobuns💔 I can already project pretty loud but I want to make sure people can hear me during the woodwind feature. Any help is greatly appreciated🙏🙏🙏 If you’re wondering I’m using a cannonball Bari with 2 1/2 and 3 strength reeds.
