New to the business

Brain trust, I’m new to this business. I’m switching over from being a high producing mortgage loan officer who is no longer a high producing loan officer due to market conditions.

I’m curious to know what the best way to learn this business is? I’m smart and extremely detail oriented and not afraid of detailed numbers down to the penny and managing workflows, it’s what I have been doing for 10 years.

Where do I start? I’m being “mentored” by a guy who makes a fortune in this business, I know he does because I’ve seen his tax returns, but he seems extremely distracted and is offering very little knowledge or guidance on what to do. Pretty much what I have learned is, call people and get their statements and we will review them. That’s it.

I want to learn faster than that, and I also want to feel confident when I’m reaching out to businesses. Where do you recommend I start? The guy is going to be getting an override on anything we work on together, I’m open to having this arrangement with someone else who will actually train me better.

Who is selling into AI adjacent /infrastructure industries? How is it going?

I'm curious to see what business to business companies people are selling for that are helping build out the infrastructure for AI, whether its chips, cables, power equipment, batteries, or even staffing to help hire the employees the infrastructure companies need to build out their projects.

Who is using AI to remove some of the drudgery from the LO job?

How are you using AI to make your LO job easier? I’ve been using Claude a lot for guideline questions, not always 100% accurate so be careful. I also have it read contracts for me, HOA docs, title reports etc, it’s helped A LOT. I also built a couple skills to calculate self employed borrowers income into a MGIC worksheet bits it’s very clunky.

I’m curious to see what others are doing and will share.

Who else is having a terrible year?

The first few months were strong, now my business is in the John! No refinances, occasional HELOCs and, hardly any purchases. I’m a 10 year LO, should have left the business when rates went to 8% thinking I’ll phase out of the business this time around so I don’t dig another massive hole like I did last time.

Personally I don’t enjoy the business even when I’m crushing it, but this job is just soul crushing when you’re hardly making any money and having to do it. I think I’m making the full pivot starting today. I’m self gen at a broker and have done about 15M YTD almost nothing the last couple of months.
