GitHub: https://github.com/mechanicwb2-hub/now-playing-taskbar-widget

My taskbar widget for Windows 11 used to be Spotify only. It works with any player now

I posted this here a while back. It's a little widget that sits inside the Windows 11 taskbar and shows whatever's playing, so you're not alt-tabbing to Spotify or fighting that miniplayer that floats over your windows.

The thing people kept asking was basically "why Spotify only?". Fair enough. So now it just follows whatever's actually playing. Spotify, YouTube in a browser tab, Apple Music, Windows Media Player, anything that reports to Windows. You switch player and it follows along.

The rest works like before. Play/pause, skip, a progress bar you can drag, and for Spotify the liked state, Smart Shuffle, repeat and volume. No login, no API keys, no account, it just reads the Windows media session.

Free and open source:

Store (one click, auto updates): https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9P12TLJZG2CJ

GitHub: https://github.com/mechanicwb2-hub/now-playing-taskbar-widget

There's an optional paid Pro for themes, a visualizer, synced lyrics and hotkeys if you want it, but everything above is free. Anyway, thanks to everyone who kept bugging me about the non-Spotify thing, you were right.

I made a free now-playing widget that lives in the Windows 11 taskbar

A few weeks ago I shared a small app I built: a now-playing widget that sits right in the Windows 11 taskbar — album art, title/artist and full playback controls, without opening Spotify. No login, no API keys, no account — it just reads Windows' media session.

It's free and open-source, and it stays that way — I want anyone to be able to use it, no one left out.

Since then I've shipped a bunch of updates, a lot of it straight from your comments here:

• Fixed the thing where it briefly grabbed focus to sync the ♥ (some of you were dropping keystrokes while typing) — gone now.

• Added an option to force light/dark icons, for transparent taskbars.

And for anyone who wants to make it their own — and help keep the project going — there's now an optional Pro (one-time 2.99€, Microsoft Store):

• 5 themes: Néon, Synthwave, Retro LCD, Minimal, Aurora (+ a fully custom look)

• An audio visualizer built into the progress bar that reacts to what's playing — on any output device

• Custom accent / text / background colors

• Global media hotkeys + synced lyrics

Pro is completely optional — the free version isn't crippled.

🔗 GitHub (free, open-source): https://github.com/mechanicwb2-hub/spotify-taskbar-widget

Not affiliated with Spotify — it just talks to the Windows media controls. Huge thanks to everyone who tried it, reported bugs and suggested features. Feedback very welcome 🙏

Entretanto lancei várias atualizações, muitas vindas do vosso feedback:

• Atalhos globais + letras sincronizadas

I made a free widget that puts your Spotify controls right inside the Windows 11 taskbar

I always hated that the Windows 11 taskbar has all that dead space next to the weather button, and that Spotify's own miniplayer floats *over* your windows. So I built a widget that lives **inside the taskbar** — always visible, never in the way.

**What it does:**
- Album art, title and artist of the current track, right in the taskbar
- Play/pause, previous/next, and a seekable progress bar
- ❤️ Add to favorites — with the real liked state shown (green check)
- All three Spotify shuffle modes (including Smart Shuffle) and repeat modes
- Volume slider that moves Spotify's own volume
- Auto-positions next to the weather button on any resolution/DPI; adapts if your taskbar icons are left-aligned; follows auto-hide; multi-monitor support
- Light & dark taskbar themes, EN/PT, adjustable size, configurable buttons

**The nice part:**
no Spotify login, no API keys, no account setup. It reads the Windows media session and Spotify's own desktop app directly. Install and it just works.

**Free and open source (MIT):**
- Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9P12TLJZG2CJ
- GitHub (source + installer): https://github.com/mechanicwb2-hub/spotify-taskbar-widget

The Store version installs in one click and updates automatically. winget support is pending review.

Unofficial project, not affiliated with Spotify. Feedback and bug reports very welcome — and if you find it useful, there's a Ko-fi link in the repo ☕

**A parte boa:**

- Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9P12TLJZG2CJ
