Dottore as The Scapegoat (spoiler tagged for religious/blasphemous imagery. Also story spoilers)

Hello, everyone. Max here. I've got some things on my mind that I'd like to share. As somebody who's spent more than half of their life studying religion and especially the occult, I've noticed a few things about Dottore that really made me pause to think. I didn't really plan to share these musings, but after talking to a friend (u/AsleepPen9974) I've decided I'll go ahead and upload my thoughts. This might be a little messy, so apologies if it seems like frantic ramblings. Because... That's kind of what this is. A disorganized collection of threads that may or may not lead somewhere.

As we all know, Genshin is chock full of Zoroastrianism and Gnostic symbology. Over the past couple of months, I've been doing a personal study on Dottore and how he fits into the grand scheme of the game's religious allusions.

Trigger warnings in advance: this post will be touching on the Occult as well as Christianity within the framework of Genshin's own approach to religion on the whole. If it makes you uncomfortable to see certain (potentially villainous) characters compared to the likes of Jesus, then please discontinue, because I'm about to lay down some blasphemy.

With the disclaimer out of the way. Let's begin

Scapegoat - M.C. Escher

"Hah... I don't like this story. The hero was too arrogant, and the dragon was too stubborn. They were both idiots who couldn't find another way."
"They claimed they wanted to save the world, but they couldn't even understand what the other was thinking. If it were me, I'd never do it like that."

"That's good to hear. After all, this idea of sacrificing yourself to save the world is little more than an unrealistic obsession."

- A Teaspoon of Transcendence, weapon description

So, to start off, there's something about Dottore's design(s) that's been bothering me for a while. And I'm genuinely sort of surprised it hasn't been brought up elsewhere. But has anyone noticed that he has stigmata? Not in the literal sense, but his design evokes that image, and it feels pretty intentional.

https://preview.redd.it/5a2b5a4clhbh1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=118576302f712a4b6a32f0016f5bc4cc9a198bcd

https://preview.redd.it/dy3dyaddlhbh1.jpg?width=492&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e619a5dd21f5014878174c38eedbaafbff27ae62

Each of them has stigmata symbolism on both feet, and each of them has one hand with the same circle in the palm. Moonttore's is on the left hand, and Datattore's is on the right. They each represent different approaches to religious dogma and ceremonial magic. Ironically, these paths are the opposite of the stigmatized hand. More on that later.

I also believe each of them represents Chi (The Greek letter X) and Psi (The Greek letter  Ψ). X, interestingly, is often attributed to Christ, whereas Psi is often attributed to the devil.

https://preview.redd.it/e3wkufz9mhbh1.jpg?width=591&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=520d729152b545fd4f115f2b373a4b4edcb146f0

The image above showcases the various places where an X can be found in the Heretic of the False Moon's design. I've also circled the parts that symbolize his stigmata!

https://preview.redd.it/f94e91zomhbh1.jpg?width=534&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=caa386e2ce9f0dc866cb2d08a80b282f427a844e

Likewise, here I've highlighted his stigmata as well as his incorporation of Ψ.

So, what does it mean? Personally, I believe that these two segments are equally representative of the two halves of Omega/35's contradictory philosophy. These two halves of him symbolize the duality of his personal goals and desires. On one hand, he wants to be a divine savior for humanity. On the other hand, he feels he has to embrace his role as a villain in order to further his goals. And with those two approaches in mind, let's get into the occult practices themselves.

The Heretic of the False Moon and The Right-Hand Path

During the events of the Nod-Krai patches, there comes a point where Dottore kidnaps the Traveler in hopes of recruiting them to his side of the conflict. Now, personally, I think the majority of what he had to say was entirely performative, but I won't be touching on that in this post no matter how strong my belief in my personal reading is. I only want to analyze exactly what he had to say about the goals he presented to the Traveler.

Let's talk about the Right-Hand Path.

The Right-Hand Path is the usual framework by which various dogmas operate worldwide. It adheres to a strict set of tenets that promote union, social harmony, and the elevation of the many versus the self. The Right-Hand Path adheres to the status quo-- those who follow the right-hand path submit themselves to a higher power and surrender the ego in order to perform acts of altruism and/or spiritual purification. Essentially, the right-hand path upholds the world's mainstream conventions, with a focus on ritual, tradition, and formal structure that communes with a higher power. The right-hand path also usually incorporates systems of punishment and reward into their dogma, such as karma, heaven and hell, or the three-fold law.

I think it's also pertinent to mention that the right-hand path also divides the self into three parts. The mind, the body, and the soul. The id, the ego, and the superego. The heavenly self, the human self, and the worldly self.

"All who live yearn for equality, but unless the gods prostrate themselves and profess that they are mere servants of the living, equality can never exist."

"The creation of a world is the ultimate scientific experiment. I have taken my research to the highest level, where I shall be not just a god, but also a servant to many sacred spirits. I shall heed the truth and perform holy deeds."

- Il Dottore, A Traveler on a Winter's Night

Despite his selfishness and massive ego, Dottore in this instance wants to fulfill the role of the divine. While it certainly takes quite a bit of egocentricity to conflate oneself with a god, his image for the world and for humanity is one wherein the divine serve the many. The promises he offers up to the Traveler during this quest fundamentally aligns with upholding the world's current institutions.

"The hero Narzissenkreuz always dreamed on a scale so vast and noble,
That no mortal vessel could withstand its weight.
And so the hero longed to transcend the weakness of flesh and blood.
He dreamed of shouldering all sin and suffering by himself,
Of wiping every tear from the world through the mysteries of a tearless magick,
And of attaining what some called transcendence — a transformation like the leap from ape to man."

...

"Perhaps the dragon simply could not understand the hero's choice. The hero wanted to save the human world, but he couldn't accept human weakness."
"And if not everyone could become a hero strong enough to rise above fate, then there was no meaning in transcendence for one person alone."

- A Teaspoon of Transcendence, weapon description

However, Dottore's goals are overall antithetical to the right-hand path because it prioritizes his own transcendence over the transcendence of the many. Although he would ultimately be fulfilling the role that he feels a god should fulfill, he still fails to recognize that the world he wants to provide is not one so easily accepted by the many. He lacks the empathy necessary to understand human weakness, and thus cannot fulfill the role that he feels is being neglected by the shades.

This is reflected in the design of the Heretic of the False Moon, whose left hand is the one with the stigmata symbolism. His own ego puts him at odds with the right-hand path, because only a person as individualistic as himself could put themself on the same level as a literal god. And interestingly enough, the archive entry actually nods to a left-hand path ideology, rather than the right-hand.

https://preview.redd.it/qthocx1n3jbh1.png?width=883&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4acbf8110049c4f632d982fcaea6a4af5f9c253

The Exalted Master of the Heretical Path and the Left-Hand Path

Which brings us to The Exalted Master and the Left-Hand Path. We've discussed what the right-hand path is. Let's talk about the left-hand now.

The left-hand path in occultism is the right-hand's equal opposite. It focuses more on empowerment of the self in order to reach personal enlightenment, as well as the rejection of religious institutions and divine authority. The Exalted Master seeks to weaken the power of Teyvat's divine authority, by any means necessary. He, once again, elevates himself to the level of a god in order to challenge the world's laws. He is more committed to entirely overthrowing the system and building something new from the ground up, unlike his other half, who sought to perfect what was already in place.

However, once again, his actions are antithetical to the left-hand path, symbolized once more by the stigmata symbol being on his right hand. By ridding the world of Irminsul's influence, he essentially performs an act of altruism and sacrifice, freeing the many from the power of the ruling divine. That's not to say that it's necessarily a purposely altruistic act. However, it does potentially open up the avenue for humanity at large to transcend its current state. After all, now that all of Teyvat's information is being parsed by the Aaru, it is much more firmly in the hands of the people of Teyvat than it was before.

And just like with Heretic of the False Moon, his archive entry nods towards the right-hand path ideology rather than the left-hand.

https://preview.redd.it/bw7b4vqu3jbh1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=783aadea26edc430b1e91b2f85d294252d2dc0c4

Anyways. These are just some thoughts that have been on my mind. Leave it to a former practitioner to see patterns where they may or may not exist. There are people far smarter than me in this sub who could probably dig more into this and find even more evidence for what I'm trying to get at. Which, at the end of it all, is that Dottore is in some capacity a scapegoat. And he very well may have made himself into one purposely. The Christian iconography feels very intentional, so I can't help but wonder if there's some sort of a savior narrative going on here. I do think, however, that there is plenty of room to look at some of the other harbingers (Capitan, Columbina, and possibly Pierro) with the same saviors' lens. I want to emphasize that although I see savior imagery within Dottore, I don't think he is the end all be all savior, or that he is a literal representation of Jesus within the game. I think they each may represent an aspect of the Christ figure. Capitano sacrificed himself in order to preserve the afterlife, helping the souls of his men and many others to move on from this world and return to the leylines. He's a warrior and a champion of the people. Pierro would represent Christ as a leader, sending out the other harbingers to perform on behalf of the organization. It's worth noting that including himself, there are twelve seats within the harbingers' ranks, even if some of those seats are currently vacant. Columbina represents Christ as the divine, a genuine god sent to walk among men. Dottore, then, would represent Christ as the scapegoat. One who shoulders the sins of others in order to free humanity from the burden.

Do with this what you will :') I've run out of the energy necessary to organize my thoughts further. As I said before, there are people far smarter than me in this sub who can probably do way more with these threads than I can.

Thanks for reading!

SPOILERS!!! Lohen's Witch's Homework

Okay, I need to get this out here. Lohen's witch's homework quest is Dottore coded as all hell and I am convinced more than ever that Zandik got his hands on a Hexenzirkel prophecy at some point.

Lohen is NOT Dottore, obviously. Not even a segment. But I do think his character is meant to parallel Dottore's and foreshadow his eventual backstory.

In the quest, he finds a script written by a Hexenzirkel witch. Uses it to study his lines in advance. Proceeds to impress Nicole with his knowledge, then decides "nah I'm not finishing this" and fucks off before the prophecy is fulfilled. Bro even hit the Dottore pose as if it wasn't already incredibly on the nose.

I'M NOT CRAZY I SWEAR I'M NOT CRAZY. HEXEREI DOTTORE I BELIEVE IN YOU.

The Double-Edged Sword of Live Service Storytelling

So, I've seen a lot of discussion about fatigue surrounding the story, and concerns regarding what the future holds for Dottore. And I want to inspire just a little bit of hope by explaining what makes Genshin such a heavy hitter when it comes to keeping their game relevant.

I want to start by saying I am not here to glorify the story's writing, nor am I trying to diminish the feelings people may have toward the story and its current direction. As somebody who's been here since launch, I completely understand how exhausting it can be to keep up with everything update to update. But I also want to take some time to soothe some fears and maybe even inspire some hope in those of us who still have doubts. I recognize that my optimism may be off-putting to some, but I have full faith that moving forward we will see more of him, and I'll get into why that is now.

So. First and foremost, I think it's important to remember that Genshin is a live service game. The story is continuous, and has a clear beginning, middle, and ending in sight. It follows a singular hero's journey to find their sibling, and will end in a reunion where the two come together to triumph over gods and fate. It begins in a land dedicated to freedom, and will end on a planet entirely liberated. But it's already been nearly six years since the game first launched, and that finish line still feels incredibly distant. There are mysteries yet unsolved that leave us agonizing over what's in store for the future. Capitano. Dottore. The Sinners. Ved and Dain. Khaenri'ah. The traveler's sibling. Celestia and the Heavenly Principles. All of these are things that the story has held over our head forever with only tiny bits of relief here and there. Only recently did we even get an inkling of an answer as to what the abyss even is as a phenomenon, let alone what it's going to take to conquer it.

And that is a deliberate choice.

How do you keep your readers coming back to a story? With a good cliffhanger. Hoyoverse, for all of their... Interesting story choices, are masters of the cliffhanger. They feed you just enough information to get you thinking, and bait you into sticking around for the next update. Just to see what happens. Maybe to get some answers you've been waiting for. This is both the strength and weakness of a live service story. The beginning, middle and end may already exist, but we aren't given the whole picture all at once. Because it's profitable to make people wait. And for those who aren't specifically waiting for an outcome, a good twist can just as easily drum up excitement and hype.

So what does this mean for our Doctor? Simple. They're not giving us the full picture because it's profitable. There are so many mysteries left unsolved, and that means we can absolutely count on getting those answers someday in the future. It's only a matter of when.

Playing this game patch to patch is simultaneously an exercise in self torture and reward. It's like watching a television show that only releases an episode once every few months, or reading a book that only gets a chapter uploaded online every few weeks. Because they want you to come back to see what happens next. If every mystery is immediately solved, then there's no reason to watch and wait, is there? We wouldn't be talking, or discussing famous artists, or theorizing about the specific genus of a lizard found only in specific parts of the map, if there was a definitive ending to the character we love most.

I have every faith that we will meet him again, and that our reunion will be most enlightening. And I hope that maybe this little post of mine inspired a little bit of hope in you as well 💖 keep on talking, Dottore nation, because there's research to be done and theories to craft, and I think that would make our Doctor very proud.

Crack Theory - In Order To Trick Fate...

... he first had to trick himself.

https://preview.redd.it/v2ecwa7c8c3h1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dabfeed994d338353751308e4f3ad502ee5d1311

Hello, everyone! Max again, this time here with a crack theory. This post will be full of copium, and is entirely speculative. But I think it's an interesting thought experiment, and the more I thought about it, the more interesting it seemed.

Stop me if you've heard this before: a prophecy is laid out, spelling future disaster for the querent. No matter what they do, no matter how they act, these events are destined to pass. It is up to the querent, then, to find a way around the rules and circumvent fate first by seeing it through.

The querent decides that the best course of action is to trick fate by first tricking themself. They make an exact copy of themselves, severing their soul in two. One remains human, and the other is... something else. Something immortal. One half goes on to see the prophecy through, unknowingly playing the role that the other had set in motion for them centuries prior.

Ring any bells?

My proposal is this: what if Omega is to Zandik what Furina is to Focalors? An unwitting participant in a play that was already determined in advance. Fate would not allow Zandik to win, so he set his own plans in motion before his death, and died without ever telling anybody about those plans. If his intentions died with him, then they could more easily be carried out by unsuspecting parties. Keeping these things secret would better ensure that they would actually happen. Since, as seen with everything else he's tried to do for himself, fate would cause it to backfire on him in some way. In this case, then, everybody wins! We get a great villain in the form of Omega/35 who acted selfishly. And we get a redeemable Zandik, who knew his past self well enough to predict the moves he would make in the future. In the end, Zandik wins. All of his goals come to pass.

That's all! Just a quick theory post, because I've been thinking way too hard and it's been slow at work. Might as well get some of the energy out. What are your thoughts?

Pattern of Paradoxes with the Big 3

Was lurking in a thread and somebody (u/declermontt) brought up a great point about Capitano's death. His current existence is a paradox, since he's dead, but also undying. A death paradox.

So I started thinking.

Columbina also went through a paradox in 6.3. A time paradox. In order to be reborn in the future, she had to allow herself to die in the past. So we don't know which Bina came first. She's entirely cyclical. Chicken or the egg.

Now with Dottore we have another paradox. A life paradox. In order for him to be reborn, he has to make himself. But if all of his most recent selves are dead, then who will make him? If he actually succeeds in doing this, it will be a paradox.

What could this mean for the future? And could somebody else potentially end up being a space paradox?

Blue Horned Lizard Spawn Points via Interactive Map

So they do spawn in the desert.

And specifically only in the spots near to where the AQ took place. Was this intentional?

Edit: I went and tested this theory in-game and have posted my findings below. It seems like the lizards can spawn in ANY bush (at least in the desert) but have a low probability of spawning. The ones pinned on Interactive Map are naturally occuring spawn points where you can find them chilling in the overworld without breaking the bushes.

The only ones you can find in the desert without breaking bushes are all underground.

Il Dottore, Escher, and Metamorphosis

Keep your eye on the birdies

I just can't stay away

Hello, everyone. Max again, because apparently my impulse control is about as sturdy as a wet napkin. My roommate previously allowed me to use their account to get some observations out, and I am ever so grateful to them for being so helpful. But I have so much to share, and it's really not fair to make them act as the middle man. So here I am, with more details about Escher, and some research to back it up.

For those of you who didn't get a chance to see it, I've actually already brought up some of my evidence here. There are parts of my earlier post that I'm not super attached to at this point, but I think it's worth bringing up.

So let's dive into it. Who is Escher? What is his significance to Dottore, and what does this mean for the future? Let's start by discussing his real-world namesake, famed artist M.C. Escher.

Life

I'm going to start this analysis by giving a brief description of the artist's life. M.C Escher was a visual artist from the Netherlands. He's best known for his eye-catching illustrations of impossible architecture and his love of tesselations. Escher was an artist who went unappreciated for most of his lifetime, only receiving wide acclaim for his work a few years before his passing.

Escher was born in the Netherlands. As a child he was of poor constitution and considered sickly. He spent much of his childhood in different hospitals, away from home and away from his family, to rest and recuperate. His home life was fairly disciplined and comfortable, and his parents greatly valued education, intellect and the sciences. It is notable that his father, George Escher, was a hydraulic engineer who spent many years in Japan helping to build infrastructure such as harbors and dams.

Escher himself struggled academically despite being rather bright. He couldn't bring himself to focus on things outside of his scope of interest. He did, however, have a fascination for music, nature, and astronomy respectively, and took up an enjoyment for playing the piano as well. Despite his academic struggles, he was soon discovered to have innate artistic talents.

His father would later send him to school to become an architect, a career that brings together engineering and art, but this would ultimately end in him dropping out of college. He would then return later, only to pivot his education from structural engineering to the arts.

Without further ado, let's address his art.

Tesselations

Pattern Lesson 7 - M.C. Escher

Tesselations are geometric patterns that are capable of repeating infinitely, and it's worth noting that the world's earliest known tesselations were created by Sumerians as early as 4000 B.C. These geometric patterns are usually interlocking shapes that repeat to form a mosaic, often made of tiles. Escher was inspired heavily by crystallography, an area of scientific and mathematical study dedicated to the structure of crystals.

Escher did not excel in math, in fact he struggled with numbers on paper. But visually, his works are extremely mathematical. Many of his pieces center heavily on geometry, congruency, symmetry, and patterns and repetition.

>"It remains an extremely absorbing activity, a real mania to which I have become addicted, and from which I sometimes find it hard to tear myself away."

>- M.C. Escher, on tesselations

Impossible Structures and Worlds

Relativity - M.C Escher, 1953

Above is the most widely recognized piece of art by Escher, a piece called Relativity. It showcases an impossible construction, one where space is distorted and gravity is not fixed. Escher was very fond of creating images that could trick the eye, forcing the brain to accept the possibility of a reality that is physically impossible. A world where it's impossible to distinguish the floor from the ceiling.

Waterfall - M.C. Escher

Escher created worlds in his images that cannot function under the laws of our world. These impossible worlds are limited only by the imagination.

https://preview.redd.it/icth5ohm2i2h1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=d356ca37a029905b27e8f1632b59639b317efa38

Biological Elements

Fish, birds, lizards. Escher put a lot of effort into creating works that depicted animals such as fish, reptiles, birds and insects. He had a particular focus on birds and lizards, which are pretty heavily associated with Dottore.

Lizard - M.C. Escher

Metamorphosis II - M.C. Escher

Stars - M.C. Escher

Now where have I seen this shape before...

Behold, the humble polyhedron

(Even the triangular shape surrounding this polyhedron reminds me of Relativity. Maybe I'm just seeing things)

Metamorphosis

Day and Night - M.C. Escher, 1938

Some of Escher's most prominent and striking pieces of art are about Metamorphosis-- objects changing from one state to another. From cubes slowly morphing into humans, to fish becoming birds, we see this theme recurring often in his work.

Liberation - M.C. Escher, 1955

Dottore's Escher References

So, how does this all relate to our Doctor? Let's start by addressing the elephant in Temple of Space. Escher, the NPC, is an extremely mysterious character to me. We know very little about who he is, where he came from, or what his purpose is. When we meet him, he is presumably trying to find his way back to the Temple of Space. We later learn that he was exiled, presumably for exposing other inhabitants of the Temple of Space to knowledge of a space-time distortion they shouldn't have had access to. I think it's especially interesting that he was exiled while he was in the Desert Pavilion area in ToS.

We also see references to M.C. Escher's work Stars, which features the aforementioned polyhedron and also chameleons. We have seen that lizards are strongly associated with Dottore, and it's theorized that he has used them to spy on us. It wouldn't surprise me if he used the lizards in some way to steal the Pyro Gnosis for the Tsaritsa in his final moments.

After all....

https://preview.redd.it/e1pcn06q5i2h1.png?width=1242&format=png&auto=webp&s=046eb961b0ddc3f4dcffddcb08ee397ed78c3ad2

Three times in the span of one patch can't be a coincidence.

The painting in Temple of Space is completely different from Escher's work of the same name, "Stars," but it's worth noting that the artist did have a fascination with astronomy and stars. Apparently, the inhabitants of Temple of Space found the NPC Escher's artwork pretty unnerving, although it's never explained why exactly.

But lastly and most importantly, I think we should discuss segments.

What are segments but tesselations? Infinitely replicating, congruent reiterations of the original shape.

Here is my theory:

The Escher we met outside of Dornman Port must be related to Dottore in some way. My current guess is that he's a segment that was placed within the Temple of Space purposely in order to be eternally preserved. Or, alternatively, he could be a human clone. Whatever the case may be, I think it's important that he was brought into the Temple of Space, and that whoever he is underneath it all, Escher is most likely a disguise. I also think that if he is related to Dottore, he's likely a clone or segment that the others don't know about.

https://preview.redd.it/1bk9szw04i2h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=5865efadde3637df1ed1f478ec9780923a83908c

Those who have tried to research into Escher, the mechanic involved in the Tatarasuna historical event, have turned up no leads on his history or background. There is a good chance that Escher was never a real person. At least, not beyond being Dottore's alias.

I think it's also very convenient that we only meet "Maukie" briefly in passing before the quest begins. One needs only visit the Statue of the Seven in Dornman Port in order to meet him, and then never again. The "Maukie" we meet inside Temple of Space is Melanta... Once again, Escher's identity is assumed by a malicious element that uses his likeness as a disguise in order to reach a certain goal.

All I'm saying is, if they can introduce a future playable character as an NPC in an event cough Durin cough then they can most definitely use an NPC used briefly in a world quest in the future for the same reason. Escher could be our mini Durin.

I think that if Dottore comes back, it will likely be through the Escher NPC we met, and what we will see is a metamorphosis. The next iteration of this man is now free from the restraints of fate, which means he can finally grow and move on as a person. We will see a personal transformation-- a man who accepts that an older version of himself did horrible and unspeakable things, but who can also recognize himself in his current form as something new. Somebody different, no longer obsessed with previous manias. Whether or not he'll be playable or stuck forever as an NPC is to be observed.

Bet on element? Electro. Escher the artist had an affinity for infinity and eternity, especially later in his life when he began to experience a decline in his health. So much so that he created this piece, which alludes to eternity and infinity as its central themes.

https://preview.redd.it/vbc1m56bdi2h1.jpg?width=1053&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99e14df7346502be8c5fa4e78c0f2d4c204e99c9

Closing Thoughts

Escher is an artist whose works touch upon a lot of the themes Dottore encompasses within the game. From self replication, to creating impossible worlds, to metamorphosis. My head has been full of lizards and polyhedrons, and I think it's interesting just how much of what we know about Dottore can be succinctly summarized by the works of an artist whose name functions as his alias.

These are all of my findings upon digging into the real-world artist whose name inspired Dottore's alias. What we will see in the future regarding Dottore and Escher is yet to be known. But I don't think it's a coincidence that so much of who Dottore is can be tied back to this graphic artist, and I also think that it's no coincidence that we saw Escher outside of Dornman Port, just before the events of the 6.6 patch. There are too many questions surrounding Maukie as an NPC for this chapter to be fully closed. Hopefully as we move forward, we will run into him again. As of right now, he's a wandering amnesiac who doesn't even know his full name.

Perhaps I'm spotting patterns and connections where they don't really exist. I'm admittedly pretty high on copium, but can't imagine there being no correlation. I digress.

I hope that this proved to be an interesting read, and I also hope that it gives a little bit of hope for the future.

For anyone interested in viewing more of M.C. Escher's works, you can find a gallery of most of his works here. Please beware that he does include some artistic nudity in his works, so engage with this archive with some discretion.
