I think Paul Simon has as a songwriter has harnessed the art of songwriting in a plebeian sort of way that can resonate with the listener at a more lyrical and sensory level than someone like Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen. There is no doubt in the world that he has written profound songs but within both his solo career and the catalogue of Simon & Garfunkel he writes words that appeal more to the senses and to a kind of superficial —not to say shallow—esprit. Whereas Dylan can weave a story about a series of nouns in the fashion of Subterranean Homesick Blues, Simon concocts a sonic enterprise that allows him to communicate something simple and interesting, an entire career of nation infecting ear-worms. I think both are brilliant but lately have appreciated Simon's candor. He also is undoubtedly more dedicated to creating unique instrumental and vocal arrangements which are obviously more sensory than the field of songwriting in the first place. His self titled album I think exemplifies this adequately with a song like Run That Body Down or Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, but it's also just what i'm listening to tonight
Image unrelated I just think most people would like a picture of a rabbit I took on a walk the other day more than my brief and scrambled thoughts upon Paul Simon
