In a major win for regional cinema, two Marathi films ‘Jeev’ (The Creature) and ‘April May 99’ have been picked for the prestigious Marché du Film section of the Cannes International Film Festival in France.

Directed by Ravindra Jadhav, Jeev is a critically-acclaimed feature. When the elder of the Chaure family, father of the young protagonist Miru, dies on the day of Holi, an ancient custom is invoked. Until the departed soul (jeev) returns to the family by the next Holi, no festivals may be celebrated and no sweets prepared.

April May 99, directed by Rohan Mapuskar, is a nostalgic coming of age tale set in the pre-digital summer of 1999 in Shrivardhan. Three 14-year-old best friends Krushna, Prasad, and Siddhesh eagerly await their school vacation filled with cycling, games, and carefree adventures.

The actor, who is currently promoting his upcoming film, Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa, said in a recent interview that indie films are losing ground in both theatres and on streaming, with large spectacle-led films dominating conversations on both mediums.

In an interview with PTI, Ranvir spoke about the landscape for indie films in the country. “It's not a great time right now for smaller films like our film. Earlier, the theatrical system was difficult for smaller independent films because of the big films and the big star system. Then the streaming platforms came, and it became some kind of respite for these kinds of films. But now again, we see even on streaming platforms, the gatekeeping is becoming similar to how it was in the theatrical system. I really don't see how the success of a film like Dhurandhar will help films like 'Sohrab Handa' because these films are not about spectacle. They are about characters, about cinematic excellence without the scale, the grandeur, and the budget. One hopes that, just as the industry evolved from theatrical to television to streaming, the internet itself will eventually offer solutions for this as well."

Director Ritwik Pareek's film Dug Dug, a satire about religious frenzy in a small town, is finally set for release next month with filmmakers Anurag Kashyap, Nikkhil Advani, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Vasan Bala serving as executive producers.

The comedy mystery satire is slated to hit Indian screens on May 8, the makers announced Thursday.

Inspired by true events, Dug Dug follows a bizarre phenomenon in a village where a deceased man's motorbike is believed to grant wishes, provided devotees pray to it and offer alcohol. As word spreads and prayers begin to be answered, the belief snowballs into a full-blown, commercialised religion.
