Sayani Gupta’s directorial ‘Aasmani’ pulled from New Zealand festival over copyright concerns; filmmaker issues a statement.

The Indian Film Festival of New Zealand (TIFFNZ) has officially withdrawn its invitation to screen the short film Aasmani, the directorial debut of actor Sayani Gupta, citing alleged "copyright and confidentiality" concerns, THR India has learned.

"I want to begin by clearly stating that Aasmani is an original film. Till now, I chose not to speak. Not because silence meant acceptance, nor because I had nothing to say. Since the allegation was put forth before the appropriate authority, I followed due process and believed that facts should be placed there, and not tried through WhatsApp groups, inboxes or public opinion. But silence can sometimes bury the truth under noise.", said Sayani in her statement.

Five Indian Titles To Look Out For In The Film Festival Circuits This Year!

1. Rehmat

This Punjabi-language drama film has been directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Gurvinder Singh. The film will have its world premiere on August 6, 2026 at the 79th Locarno Film Festival. It is one of the titles in the Main Competition for the Golden Leopard.

  1. Phoolan

This action drama is inspired by the autobiography I, Phoolan: The Autobiography of India’s Bandit Queen. A Prime Video Original, this Richie Mehta film features Sneha Kumari as the legendary bandit-turned-politician. Phoolan will have its world premiere on September 16, 2026 at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Special Presentations section.

  1. Lovers In The Blue Night

Anuparna Roy’s latest film takes a look at the intersecting lives of four migrants in Mumbai – a closeted husband, his bar-worker wife, a pimp and a thief, with themes like survival, desire and human connection threaded into the narrative.

  1. The Calf Doll

This Haryanvi-language hybrid docudrama has been directed by Ankur Hooda. The improvised narrative follows retired schoolteacher Satbir (Satbir Singh Hooda), whose cow gives birth to a stillborn calf and stops lactating. This triggers the old teacher to resort to an outlawed ritual, and what follows are the ramifications of that decision.

  1. To Die A Frenchman

Pankaj Rishi Kumar’s deeply humanist documentary is about identity, memory, and the search for belonging. The plot is focused on Monsieur Mounissamy, a working-class resident of Puducherry (Pondicherry) who considers French citizenship a part of his personal heritage and quixotically pursues it long after the French leave the Union Territory.

Screening this week: Urf, a documentary on Dev Anand, Amitabh Bachchan, and Shah Rukh Khan lookalikes

Urf (2022), directed by Geetika Narang Abbasi, is a documentary about Bollywood lookalikes — actors who make a living impersonating superstars, known as "Juniors" (with the prefix "Jr." attached to whichever star they resemble). It follows several lookalikes, focusing mainly on Kishore Bhanushali as Jr. Dev Anand, Firoz Khan as Jr. Amitabh Bachchan, and Prashant Walde as Jr. Shah Rukh Khan.

The title itself translates to "also known as" or "alias" — the film traces the history of the Bollywood lookalike while offering commentary on the current state of Hindi cinema, seen through the people who serve as some of its closest observers. It's less about mimicry as spectacle and more about identity — the contrast between these artists' performative public lives and their more reflective private ones, and what it costs to spend a career being mistaken for someone else. It premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and won Best Long Documentary at Kerala's International Documentary & Short Film Festival in 2022.

Huma Qureshi wants more films to be shot in Jammu & Kashmir, says region has immense untapped talent

"Baby Do Die Do", which released in theatres across the country earlier this month, is an action thriller film featuring Qureshi as a deaf and mute assassin. She has also produced the movie along with her brother Saqib Saleem through their banner Saleem Siblings.

"I treated her (Qureshi) as the lead actor of the film, not as my sister, and she was extremely professional. She would arrive even before time and never sought any special treatment," Saqib said.

He also announced that their production house plans to hold open auditions across Jammu and Kashmir for future projects.

"I have met many talented youngsters in Srinagar and Jammu. When we make our next film, we will invite aspiring actors from Jammu, Srinagar and the entire Union Territory to audition. The people here have immense potential," he said.

The single screen gold mine: What’s preventing Marathi cinema from heading the single screen way?

"Container theatres are aimed at better reach for Marathi films and, concept-wise, a great idea. But there is one more avenue that is out there, waiting to be tapped into — single-screen cinemas. Multiplexes lured cinegoers with fancy lights, AC halls and popcorn, but the magic of watching a movie at a single screen is something different. The rickety chairs, the huge hall, the samosa-cold drink stall for your interval bites, fans with minds of their own, rotating at different speeds across the hall, questionable hygiene — things that added more drama to the movie-going experience."
