As we know, Russell is widely considered to be a better defensive player than Chamberlain. But why is this? Wilt was stronger, taller, could jump as high, and he was a superior rebounder. According to the research of u/dantheman9758, across 100+ games, Wilt averaged 8.8 blocks per game and Russell averaged 8.1. I understand that Russell is often tipped for his ability to direct blocked shots to teammates, but I do not believe this makes up for his inferior rebounding ability and lack of physical dominance compared to Chamberlain; (Wilt being the strongest player in the league.) And although I know this is theoretical, but Wilt accomplished all of this whilst also being responsible for the offensive load of the teams he played for until the near end of his career. Imagine what Wilt would do defensively if he were allowed to fully preserve his stamina for defense during his physical prime? Or, just naturally wasn't as gifted offensively like Russell was therefore being naturally probed to focus on defense. Hell, when he did get to the point of his career where he was being asked to play the same role as Russell, Russell himself said he was; "Playing better than I ever did, sacrificing himself for team play."
