How do you actually decide what stays when you're building a capsule wardrobe from scratch?

I keep hearing "just keep what you actually wear" but that advice falls apart the moment I'm staring at my actual closet. Half my clothes are fine, not bad, not great, just sort of neutral filler that I reach for because it's easy, not because I love it. So how do you tell the difference between something you keep out of habit versus something that's genuinely earning its spot?

Did you do a hard purge all at once, or more of a slow rotation where things quietly fall out of use over a few months? And once you pare down, how do you resist immediately refilling the gaps with more "fine" pieces instead of holding out for the right ones?

What's your actual process for putting together an OOTD?

I feel like I never have an actual process for this, I just default to whatever's clean and doesn't feel wrong together. Then I see people whose outfits look clearly planned and intentional even when the pieces are simple, and I can't figure out what I'm missing.

Do you plan the night before, keep some kind of mental (or actual) list of combos that already work, or is it more improvised in the morning? Do you start from the weather, the occasion, or just whatever piece you're excited to wear that day?

Trying to get less random about it without turning it into a whole production every morning. Curious what actually works for people versus what just sounds good in theory.

Has knowing your color season actually changed how you get dressed day to day?

I finally sat down and tried to work out my season a few weeks ago (leaning soft summer but still not fully convinced) and now I catch myself hesitating on stuff I used to grab without thinking twice. For people who've been doing this longer, did it actually change your shopping habits and what's in your closet, or is it more of a fun thing you know in the back of your mind but don't really act on? Also curious how people landed on their season if it wasn't through a professional drape appointment. Self diagnosis feels a lot harder than the online quizzes make it look.
