New Haven to Providence Amtrak Study Hosts two Pop-up Events this Weekend

Having submitted my comments to the website for this project, I just got this e-mail:

>Hello,

>The New Haven to Providence Capacity Planning Study team is hitting the road this weekend with two public pop-up events, and we'd love for you to stop by if you’re nearby. These events are part of an ongoing series, so you'll continue to see us around the study area in the coming weeks, raising awareness of the study and giving the public a chance to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback.

>Last week, we held our first successful pop-up event at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, Rhode Island, during the Ninigret Summer Nights Concert and Movie event. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to speak with the project team and share their input, as well as to the Town of Charlestown for hosting us. We were glad to join this community event on short notice and appreciated the opportunity to connect directly with local residents.

>This weekend, we’ll be back out in the community with two more pop-up events:

>Saturday, August 15 from 9am to 5pm, Rocky Neck State Park, Connecticut

>Sunday, August 16 from 9:30am to 5:30pm, Scarborough North State Beach, Rhode Island

>At both events, members of the project team will be available to share information about the study, answer questions, and hear feedback. We hope you can stop by and encourage you to share these upcoming events with interested residents, community organizations, and stakeholders. Please keep in mind that these state beaches can be quite busy during the summer, so parking areas may be busy and/or full at certain times.

>As you know, Amtrak is conducting the New Haven to Providence Capacity Planning Study in partnership with Connecticut DOT, Rhode Island DOT, Massachusetts DOT, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, the Federal Railroad Administration, and the Northeast Corridor Commission. The study is evaluating alternatives to preserve and improve rail capacity and performance along the Northeast Corridor while carefully considering potential impacts on surrounding communities and the environment. Public input will play an important role in shaping the study and informing future recommendations.

>We are also finalizing our schedule of pop-up events for September, so stay tuned for additional opportunities to connect with the project team, as well as more formal public engagement events later in the fall

> If you are unable to attend this weekend, we encourage you to visit the project website to learn more about the study, sign up for project updates, and submit comments online.

>Thank you for your continued support of the New Haven to Providence Capacity Planning Study and for helping us spread the word about these opportunities to get involved.

> Sincerely, > The New Haven to Providence Capacity Planning Study Team

Seems like they keep trying to persuade non-train riders to support spending on train projects and doing outreach at locations the train doesn't serve and won't benefit, but I don't know. Anyway, thought it was noteworthy.

Davie Jones & The Lower Third trying to sound like the Who

Recorded in 1965 by Shel Talmy with Glyn Johns as engineer, with Jimmy Page and Nicky Hopkins as session players, as described here:

https://www.davidbowie.com/blog/2026/7/15/david-bowie-the-shel-talmy-recordings

>The ex-pat American Talmy had already achieved huge success with The Kinks, and was about to with The Who, as he branched out on his own to develop new talent after working as a staff producer upon his arrival in the UK. Talmy signed David and the Manish Boys in December 1964 and set about recording them, but Bowie was already moving on, forming Davie Jones & The Lower Third. The majority of the recordings Bowie made with Talmy featured The Lower Third or were solo demos. Talmy’s studio of choice was invariably IBC in Portland Place, also a favourite of The Who, who later recorded Tommy there, and which he considered to have the best outboard gear in London. The up-and-coming Glyn Johns, later to work with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and many more, was the engineer, and the producer had enough confidence in the combo’s abilities to bring in just the one outside player and the producer had enough confidence in The Manish Boys to bring in just the one outside player. Jimmy Page was the precocious guitar-slinger Talmy used to supercharge the more anaemic of his acts, and in this period, the future Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin eminence would frequently bring along his new toy, a custom-built fuzz pedal, to add extra bite. For The Lower Third’s IBC session, Nicky Hopkins was featured on keyboards.

CT buses will be free on July 4th and 5th

Also, train fares are reduced on Hartford Line and Shoreline East.

Buses both days will be running on a Sunday schedule...which is too bad because infrequent service probably keeps more people from using the bus system here than the cost of a fare does, and the Sunday schedule is even worse in that respect. But I'm posting this here just in case a bus or train trip was already part of your holiday weekend plans.

City seeking new use for the former CT Transit kiosk on the Green

From a post by DFA New Haven on x.com:

https://x.com/DFANewHaven/status/2065518562752561212

The city's Office of Economic Development is looking to find a new use for the kiosk that was abandoned when CT Transit moved to a new location around the corner on Church Street.

They're looking for business proposals from potential business operators rather than suggestions. But since we aren't them, anyone have any fun ideas for what could go in that booth?

City Seed Local Food Market in Fair Haven this Friday

According to the event website, it runs from 5 PM to 8 PM.

N.B.: I have no connection to this event, I just saw it listed and thought someone might be interested.
