I Watched Malèna Today and My Heart!
This movie described my experience with pretty privilege/punishment in a nutshell. The way I was shouting at the tv bro 😂😭
The way I can feel people staring at me as I’m walking around the city. How women can be weird and hostile towards me but can never come to me direct, woman to woman. How men are only nice to me until a woman is hanging off his ear about me, but their “niceness” doesn’t go beyond just wanting to be around me or sleep with me. How I can tell people that genuinely like me are afraid to openly associate with me because of the kind of attention I get.
The only time I don’t get any strong attention like this is when I gain weight and become depressed (like Malèna at the end of the movie). That’s when I’m suddenly a “girl’s girl” in every woman’s eyes. Crazy seeing that shift happen when I lose weight, and all of sudden, guys want to talk to me, and women start acting standoffish or create drama out of nowhere 😐
Malèna was just a beautiful introvert that everyone projected their desires and insecurities on. She was also strung up about her husband going to war. Nobody gave her any real sympathy or protection.
I’m not a natural introvert, but being pretty and sober (as well as a spoonie) has made socialising feel like an extreme sport sometimes.
God said I had to be born in an era where I can actually be independent as a single woman because, fuck me, what she went through was brutal tho…
I thought that scene when her hair was dyed red, and she pulled out a cigarette and all those men came up to her with a lighter was iconic af tho 😂
Hair is everything, Anthony!
