Need Advice: Medical Student Looking to Start a Career in Medical Coding

Hello po! I am currently a 3rd-year medical student and a graduate of a Biology program. I'm interested in exploring medical coding as a part-time job in WFH set up sana to help finance my remaining two years in medical school while also gaining valuable experience and practical skills in the healthcare industry.

Although I have limited experience in medical coding itself, I believe na have a strong foundation naman in medicine, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and other clinical subjects because of my educational background. I would love to hear your thoughts and advice po.

  1. Do you think I have a good chance of entering the medical coding field despite wala akong formal coding experience yet?
  2. Is my medical education an advantage, or should I expect to start from scratch like everyone else?
  3. What certifications or training and mare- recommend for someone with my background?
  4. Are there companies willing to hire beginners or trainees, especially those who are still in medical school (for those na ganiton situtaion sakin)?
  5. If you were in my position, what would be the best roadmap to become employable as a medical coder as soon as possible?
  6. Do you have any tips on how I can build my skills or strengthen my application while still studying medicine?

I would really appreciate any advice or insights you can share 🥹. Thank you so much po!
