We all know that Kanye had a lot of traumas since college dropout. His mother passing away, the divorce with Kim, another breakup and being cheated on by his girlfriend, a car crash, a bipolar disorder, nazist tweets . . .
Knowing all of this, how do you see Ye as a person? Do you see him as a bad person? Do you think that there is any reason and way to defend him of ALL of the attacks that people make against him?
Ye will always be my comfort album.
I know Ye isn't considered Kanye's best album by most people, but to me, it's my favorite. Not only because of the music itself, but because of what it means in my life.
I've had a best friend for almost three years. Our friendship has always meant a lot to me, but last year something started changing inside me. My mood would shift constantly. One week I was full of energy and confidence, and the next I felt like a completely different person. We had more arguments than ever before, and I couldn't understand why I kept hurting someone I cared about so much. She didn't understand it either, and honestly, neither did I.
I became desperate to find an explanation. That's when I decided to listen to Ye. I already knew who Kanye was, but I wasn't really a fan until I gave this album a chance.
The album hit me immediately, especially the last four tracks. After listening to it, I started reading about Kanye's bipolar disorder and researching bipolar disorder in general. I spent days trying to understand it, and little by little I realized that what I was reading described my own life. Some time later, I was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
I won't say that Ye diagnosed me. But it made me ask the questions that eventually led me to getting help. Without that album, I honestly don't know how much longer it would have taken me to understand what was happening to me.
Today, my best friend and I had the most honest conversation we've ever had. For the first time, I was able to explain what living with bipolar disorder feels like and why my moods changed so drastically. It wasn't an excuse for the things I did during my episodes—I still feel guilty for the times I hurt her. It was simply the truth, something I had never been able to explain before because I didn't even understand it myself.
For the first time after a year of arguments, confusion, and dark days, we truly understood each other. I finally understood how much my behavior had affected her, and she finally understood that there was something happening inside me that I couldn't control before I even knew what it was.
After our conversation, I walked home listening to the last four songs on Ye. "Wouldn't Leave" hit me harder than ever because, even though it's about a romantic relationship, it perfectly captured what I felt. She stayed by my side through my worst moments, even when neither of us understood why I was changing so much.
Then "Ghost Town" came on, and when I heard "I feel kind of free," I almost cried.
I've listened to this album many times before, but tonight it felt completely different. For the first time, those words truly meant something to me.
Kanye Omari West is a genius. Ye is more than just an album to me—it helped me understand myself when I felt completely lost.
