HR Operations → Workday/HRIS: how would you build the technical/functional side from here?

Hi everyone! I’m new to this community and looking for some advice from people who have made a similar transition

I’ve been working in HR / People Operations for several years at a company that uses Workday. I’m comfortable with the functional/user side and with HR processes, but I’ve realized I’m much more interested in the systems/problem-solving side and would like to move toward a Workday/HRIS role.

My main gap is backend configuration experience. I understand the business/process side, but I’m trying to figure out how to bridge the gap from Workday user to someone who can work with configuration, BPs, reporting, security, etc.

I have started networking with our internal Workday team, but I’d also like to learn proactively.

For anyone who came from HR Ops/generalist or a similar background:

- How did you get your first Workday/HRIS opportunity?
- What would you learn first in my position?
- What can I realistically practice without configuration access?
- Any Workday Community resources or other learning resources you’d recommend?

I’m especially interested in hearing about how people actually made the transition. Thanks!
