Fixing the popular 60% 63-key layout

Fixing the popular 60% 63-key layout

I recently discovered this popular 60% keyboard with a 63-key layout:

common 63-key 60% keyboard layout

I've been using it for a few weeks, and I alternate between a couple of totally standard full-size keyboards, and there are two problems with this popular layout:

  1. the [?/] key is totally out of place. It is very normal to use question marks in emails and such, and I just don't feel like there is any getting used to this either - it needs to be next to the comma and period keys, because you alternate between these in writing.

  2. the SHIFT key is in the wrong place. There is just no getting used to this - the SHIFT keys need to be on the far left/right hand side, because that's how I align my hands for typing.

I thought about how to fix this, and here's what I came up with:

my 63-key 61% keyboard layout

By increasing the total width by one quarter of a key, it all seems to work out better.

You still have the cursor-up key between the [?/] and SHIFT keys, but:

  1. the [?/] key is in it's right place relative to the comma and period, and

  2. the SHIFT key is on the right hand edge where your hand expects to find it.

Also, the right ALT key was bumped to it's normal size with the extra quarter key.

Here's a link to the editable layout if you'd like to mess around.

What do you think? Doesn't this seem like a reasonable improvement? :-)

I'm hoping a keyboard manufacturer sees this and steals it!

Please make a more comfortable version of the JBL Tune 530C

These headphones sound great, but unfortunately they are really uncomfortable.

What I liked:

- They're loud and have big bass - probably due to being powered by the USB-C connection and having an onboard DAC?

- They sound good to me. I come from many years of using exclusively earbuds, but decided to try on-ear headphones, and now I guess there's no going back.

- The flat cable never gets tangled. (Why don't all wired headphones have this??)

- The price is great, but I'd be willing to spend 2x for something better.

- They're a good size, and they pack flatly into my backpack.

What I dislike:

- They're super uncomfortable! The plastic feel is icky against my skin, my ears can't breathe, and they're unbearably hot to wear - can't go for a walk with these in the summer, and my ears are sticky after an hour in the office. 😞

- They're too tight, and it's not adjustable. I have a fairly small head, so I honestly don't know who these were designed for. (for kids? they're not marketed that way.)

Don't care:

- The onboard EQ: just has 3 settings and I couldn't care less - I leave it on "default" an use an EQ app on my Android phone to adjust it instead. It works great.

- I suspect the "passive noise cancellation" is why they're so hot - I don't need that.

I have looked at all the competing brands and they don't have what I want.

Please JBL, I'm a big fan - I have studio monitors from you as well, they're amazing.

I just need a good pair of wired headphones, why doesn't anyone make them anymore. 😌

Alternatives to JBL Tune 530C

I bought the JBL Tune 530C and now I'm looking for alternatives.

(Why don't all headphones have this??)

- The price is great, but now I'm willing to spend 2x or maybe 3x to get something better.

- They're a good size, and they pack flatly into my backpack.

What I dislike:

- They're super uncomfortable! The plastic feel is icky against my skin, my ears can't breathe, and they're unbearable hot to wear - my face is sticky after an hour in the office. 😞

- They're too tight, and it's not adjustable. I have a fairly small head, so I honestly don't know who these were designed for. (they're not marketed specifically towards kids...)

Don't care:

- The onboard EQ: just has 3 settings and I couldn't care less - I leave it on "default" an use an EQ app on my Android phone to adjust it instead.

- They don't have noise cancellation, and I don't need that.

I'm not an audiophile, I just need something decent for everyday listening.

I like wires! Nothing wireless or batteries or any of that please.

I always preferred earbuds, but the last good pair I had was 10 years ago - I don't think anyone makes even half decent wired earbuds at any reasonable price anymore. My last 3 pairs went in the trash after a year or two, so I decided to try on-ear headphones.

What would you recommend?
