Just remember...
It may be a rainy, gloomy day, but the sun will shine again.
Plus, for some of those that do work, you have a 3-day weekend, so enjoy it, even though it is raining.

I recently wrote this crawl for someone that may not know what a crawl is. I'm going to send it to them, but I know they do love Tangled. I would love some feedback, whether on the mechanics or on any Tangled Easter Eggs I could add. Thank so much! Hope you enjoy!
Tangled Crawl
Inspired by Mandy Moore’s ‘When Will My Life Begin?’
Written by misteregent (Reddit)
What you will need for this crawl:
ü Deck of cards (An online generator is fine)
o Unless otherwise noted, Aces = 1, Jacks = 11, Queens = 12, and Kings = 13. If you draw a Joker, set the Joker aside and draw 2 replacement cards. Add the face value of the replacement cards together. (Note: Jokers are optional. You have enough to do to fill your day already!)
ü Six-sided die (d6) (An online generator is fine)
ü Pen/pencil and paper or…
ü Word processing software (MS Word, Google Docs, or something similar)
ü Imaginary tower
ü Time, but you’re locked in a tower, so you have plenty.
Seven A.M., the Usual Morning Lineup
You wake up at 7:00 AM, ready to start your day! You start off by doing chores, of course!
o Sweep the floor – Roll 1d6. If even, write 56 words; if odd, write 65 words.
o Polish and wax – Shuffle the deck and draw a card. Write 100x the face value of the card.
o Do laundry – Are you doing whites today or colors? Who are you kidding? You’re locked in a tower! You have time to do both. For the whites, roll a d6 and multiply by 100 for your word count. For the colors, draw a card and multiply the face value by 50.
o Mop and shine – Did some of the water drip on the floor when you did laundry? Time to mop it up! Write to the next multiple of 1000. (If you’re at a multiple of 1000, yes, you have 1000 words to write. But you have time, right? Not like you’re going to see the lights tomorrow night.)
o Sweep again – Really? Didn’t you just sweep? Roll 1d6. If even, write 56 words; if odd, write 65 words.
And it’s only…7:15? Phew!
Read a Book (Or Maybe Two or Three)
Now that’s all done, time to read a book…or two…or three. (Maybe) Grab either 1, 2, or 3 random books off your bookshelf. Look at the last page number in each. Total those and that’s your word goal! Get writing!
Add a Few Paintings to Your Gallery
Time to add a few new paintings! Browse on the internet for a few (3-5) paintings you like. Count how many letters are in each artist’s name and total them. Multiply that number by the number of paintings. That’s your new word goal!
Play Guitar
Ready to play guitar? If you play guitar, time yourself to see how long it takes to play a song. Then write for that long. If you don’t play guitar, find a video online of someone playing and listen to the video while you write.
Knit
Look up a knitting pattern for a blanket. Take the length and width dimensions of the blanket and multiply them together, then divide by 10 and drop and round to the nearest whole number. This is your word goal! (Inches will produce a smaller word goal than centimeters. Feel free to choose based on how much time you have. But you are sitting in a tower, right?)
Cook
All these activities, you must be getting hungry! It’s time to cook something. Find a recipe. Count the ingredients and multiply by 25, that’s your word goal!
Wonder When Your Life Will Begin
Draw a card. The face value tells you how long you have to wonder when your life will begin. Feel free to take a break or stretch.
Puzzles
Search online for a jigsaw puzzle that interests you. Note the number of pieces. If it’s under 30, write for that many minutes. If it’s 30 or more, write that many words.
Darts
Time to play darts! Write down a number between 1 and 6, this is your bull’s-eye. Roll your d6 and keep track of how many rolls it takes for you to hit a bull’s-eye. Multiply the rolls by 25, this is your word goal!
Baking
Find a baking recipe online. Whatever the oven is set at in the recipe, that is your word goal! Just be careful not to burn anything. (Note: You can use either Fahrenheit or Celsius. If the recipe shows both, choose which you prefer.)
Papier-mâché
Roll a d6 and draw a card.
If 1, 3, or 5: Multiply the card face value by 25. (Draw a 10, write 250 words.)
If 2, 4, or 6: Write for the face value of the card in minutes. (Draw a 5, write for 5 minutes.)
Ballet
Find a ballet video online and write while it plays in the background. (Does not have to be continuous writing, but should be writing for the majority of time. So time is allowed for enjoying some of the music.)
Chess
Time for a game of chess. Roll a d6. (Note: You can roll as many challenges as you like, but you only have to do 1 challenge before moving on. After all, you have a lot packed into your day!)
o 1: Pawn – Roll a d6. Even: Write for 2 minutes. Odd: Write for 3 minutes.
o 2: Knight – Draw a card. Write for the number of minutes determined by the face value. (If using Jokers, ignore them for this challenge. Unless you have lots of time on your hands.)
o 3: Bishop – Roll 2d6 and multiply by 25. This is your word goal.
o 4: Rook – Draw a card and multiply by 10. This is your word goal. Roll a d6. This is how many minutes you have to reach your word goal.
o 5: Queen – Draw 3 cards. Lay them out side by side. For this challenge, face cards have a value of 10. The number created by the cards you laid down is now your word goal. (For a value of 10, carry the 1. Example: You draw K, 5, and 10. That would give you 1060 words.)
o 6: King – Roll d6. Deal that many cards. Multiply the face value of each card by the multiplier for its suit below and total them. This is your word goal. (Note: If you draw a Joker, multiply the replacement cards’ total face values by the higher of the two replacement cards' multipliers.)
o Spades – x25
o Hearts – x50
o Diamonds – x75
o Clubs – x100
Pottery
Time to make some pottery! Set your writing aside. No dice or cards for this challenge. You have to write a shape poem. That means you have to arrange the words of your poem into an object on the page. Look around your tower and take inspiration from something you see for your shape poem.
Ventriloquy
Draw a card. The face value tells you how many minutes you have to write a scene with someone throwing their voice to an inanimate object.
Candle Making
Grab some beeswax, it’s time to make a candle. Don’t forget a wick and some scented oil. You have those, don’t you? Oh, and a glass mold for the candle! Melt the wax, which is about 145 degrees Fahrenheit, so write 145 words. Mix in the oil and pour into a container with the wick. You’ll have to wait for it to harden, about 15 minutes, so write while you wait.
Stretch
Finally, you get to stretch all those activities today! Roll 2d6 and stretch for that many minutes (or just take a break.)
Sketch
Break’s over! But you’re not ready to get back to writing, are you? Pull out a sketch pad or blank page and sketch something. Maybe something you see in your imaginary tower. Maybe what you imagine you would wear to go see the lights. Let your imagination be your guide.
Take a Climb
Time for a climb? You’re in a tower, what are you going to climb? Oh! Draw 2 cards. The total of the face values tells you how many dice rolls you’re going to do! For each roll, roll the d6 and multiply by 25. Write those words, then roll again until you have climbed to the top of your total! (The words from each roll are to be written before moving on to the next roll.)
Sew a Dress
Now you’re going to sew a dress? Really? After all you’ve done? Oh wait, you’re in a tower! Search online and find a dress pattern you like. The last three digits of the pattern are your new word goal.
Reread the Books
Grab the same book or books off your bookshelf from earlier in the crawl. Total up the chapters or sections from all the books. Write for that many minutes.
Paint the Walls Some More (You’re Sure There’s Room Somewhere)
Write down the names of 6 colors, labeling them 1-6. Then roll a d6 twice. Add the number of letters in each color name and multiply by 25 for your word goal. If you roll the same number twice, use the color twice.
Brush and brush and brush and brush your hair
Draw a card. The face value tells you how many times to roll the die. Total the die rolls. (May want to write the die rolls down as you go.) Take the total and multiply by the 70 feet of hair you have! This is your word goal.
Feel like you’re stuck in the same place you’ve always been? You do happen to be in a tower.
Now, look back at all you’ve accomplished throughout this crawl and wonder and wonder and wonder and wonder what caused you to ever write so much.
You’ve had a full day. You should get some sleep so you can do this all again!
Tomorrow Night (2^(nd) Time Through the Crawl)
Happy birthday! The lights appear! Roll a d6. Look out the window for that many minutes and daydream about those lights and what it’s like out there where they glow.
Now that you’re older, your mother might just let you go.
Posting this for those that may be looking for it. Hope you enjoy!

This word crawl was largely inspired by gaelgirl’s Pokemon crawl when I was doing it. I had a lot of fun doing it and if you’re looking for shorter/easier word sprints but still plenty of challenges then I recommend it. A really nice sprint. This crawl is also limited to just Generation 1 Pokemon and the Kanto area. Anyway as I was doing it, I got to thinking about all the trainers you fight between gym battles and the Pokemon you collect so this crawl will be even longer than the gaelgirl’s crawl. Gym battles etc will be handled different but I’d still like to give credit to the person who made me want to throw myself into making this ridiculous crawl hehe. I hope you guys enjoy it. I personally do this crawl over days so I don’t know if you could do it in one setting, I don’t think its likely though hahaha.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are going to need to use an online dice roller (or you can use an actual dice if you have one to hand) for this crawl.
Underneath are the items you can collect and what they do.
● Dice - (as a heads up, sometimes you get the same number 2/3/4 times in a row, if you get it more than twice feel free to roll until you get a different number)
● For those requiring different types of dice, I recommend this place ● Integer Generator - Random numbers for Pokemon catching.
● List of Pokemon numbers
● Potion - reduce the challenge time OR the word count by half
● Super Potion - skip the challenge entirely
● Pokeball - complete the challenge in the allotted amount of time.
When it comes to PokeMarts, you can buy certain items repeatedly.
At other times if the Pokemon are not specified, you will need a random number generator from 1-151 to determine which Pokemon you’ve come across in the Kanto Pokedex. Some numbers are too rare to be captured. If the following numbers come up then please generate again.
● 142
● 144
● 145
● 146
● 149
● 150
● 151
If you have no Pokeballs to use when in the wild then you may skip that round.
● If you choose a rock, ground or electric Pokemon, sprint to 300 words.
● If you choose any other type of Pokemon, sprint to 500 words.
Koga gives you your next badge as well as two Poke Balls.
The next stage of your journey will not be easy as your next destination is Cinnabar island. You must travel on a water Pokemon across the ocean. Sprint for twenty minutes as you cross the waters.
You arrive at Cinnabar Island. Sprint to 150 words to check in with your parents back home. Having six of the eight badges is nothing to sniff at by now.
You explore the island and the abandoned Pokemon Mansion where wild Pokemon come out to play. Roll a six sided dice as many times as you want as long as you have enough Pokeballs.
● If you roll a 1, you encounter a Ponyta. Sprint to 250 words.
● If you roll a 2, you encounter a Growlithe. Sprint to 400 words.
● If you roll a 3, you encounter a Muk. Sprint to 300 words.
● If you roll a 4, you encounter a Vulpix. Sprint to 150 words.
● If you roll a 5, you encounter a Weezing. Sprint to 450 words.
After all that Pokemon catching, you head to the Pokemart to re-stock.
● For every Potion you buy, sprint for ten minutes.
● For every Super Potion you buy, sprint to 400 words.
● For every Pokeball you buy, sprint for five minutes.
Next you head to the Pokemon gym to face its leader, Blaine. Sprint for five minutes as you battle his associates.
Next up it’s Blaine himself. Prepare yourself.
● If you use a Water Pokemon, sprint for ten minutes.
● If you use a Grass or Fire Pokemon, sprint for twenty minutes.
● If you use a Rock or Ground Pokemon, sprint to 500 words.
● If you use a Normal Pokemon, sprint to 350 words.
● If you use any other type of Pokemon, sprint for fifteen minutes.
Congratulations, you beat Blaine. He gives you three Pokeballs.
It’s a long journey back to Viridian City for the final gym. Along the way you encounter plenty of Wild Pokemon. Use the number generator to determine which Pokemon you catch and repeat this as many times as you like or have Pokeballs. For every Pokemon you capture, sprint to 350 words.
You arrive back in Viridian City, tired from your travels. Take a twenty minute writing break as you camp for the night and prepare for tomorrow’s gym battle.
The next day you feel good as you finally get past that smug receptionist. You take on a couple of trainers before facing Giovanni. Sprint to 400 words.
Giovanni’s up next. Roll a four sided die to determine how many attempts it takes you to beat him.
● If you roll a 1, you beat him on the first attempt so sprint to 450 words.
● If you roll a 2, it takes you three attempts, so sprint for fifteen minutes.
● If you roll a 3, you beat him on the second attempt so sprint for ten minutes.
● If you roll a 4, it takes you six attempts, so sprint to 600 words.
Congratulations! You have beaten Giovanni and he reluctantly gives you a Super Potion and a Poke Ball.
Before you move onto the Pokemon League, you decide to go home and visit Professor Oak and your parents. Sprint to 700 words as you spend time with them.
Afterward you make your way to Indigo Plateau where the Elite Four are waiting for you. Sprint for five minutes as you prepare.
This is your last chance to shop before facing them. (These ones are a nice breather).
● For every Potion you buy, sprint to 250 words.
● For every Super Potion you buy, sprint to 300 words.
● For every Pokeball you buy, sprint to 150 words.
First up we have Lorelei with her ice and water Pokemon. Sprint to 1200 to battle her. Take two Pokeballs if you decide not to skip this challenge in full.
Secondly, we have Bruno with his rock and fighting Pokemon. Sprint for thirty minutes to battle him and take two Super Potions if you do the challenge in full.
Thirdly, we have Agatha with her ghost and poison Pokemon. Sprint to 2000 words to battle her. Take one Super Potion and two Poke Balls for doing this in full.
Lastly we have Lance with his dragon type Pokemon. Sprint for an hour to battle him. Take three Super Potions and two Pokeballs for doing this in full.
Congratulations Pokemon League Champion! You have beaten the Elite Four! Take a well deserved, thirty minute writing break.
Before you head back home though, you have one final challenge that you want to pursue. You want to locate and capture one of the most powerful Pokemon in the world - Mewtwo. Your sources tell you that he’s rumoured to be in Cerulean Cave. Sprint for ten minutes while you travel there.
You reach the Cave and are invited inside by a guard. Once inside, lots of wild Pokemon about. Attempt to catch as many Pokemon as you like here, provided you have enough Pokeballs. For every Pokemon you catch, sprint for five minutes. Roll two five sided die.
● If you roll a 2, you encounter Gloom. ● If you roll a 3, you encounter Golbat.
● If you roll a 4, you encounter Arbok.
● If you roll a 5, you encounter Kadabra.
● If you roll a 6, you encounter Ditto.
● If you roll a 7, you encounter Dodrio.
● If you roll a 8, you encounter Raichu.
● If you roll a 9, you encounter Sandslash.
● If you roll a 10, you encounter Graveller.
Finally you encounter Mewtwo. He engages you in battle. Sprint for thirty minutes.
● If you hit 1000 words, you capture Mewtwo.
● If you hit less than 1000 words, Mewtwo escapes. Ahh well, you tried.
After a very long Pokemon adventure, you are ready to go back home for a much deserved break.
Don't feel like you have to meet every single challenge in order to move on! The timed ones are just to push yourself (I've certainly never managed to successfully write 500 words in five minutes!).
Hamilton may want to fight, not write, but you still have a novel to finish. Write 250 words.
Helpless
One week later and you’re writing a letter nightly. So get tonight’s letter (or word count) done in a 10-minute sprint.
Satisfied
You will never be satisfied… with the word count from the last challenge. Don’t be “helpless”- write twice as much as you just wrote.
The Story of Tonight (reprise)
Raise a glass to freedom- something you will never see again! At least, not for the rest of the month. Take a break, have a drink. We’ll see you on the other side of the war. Wait For It
Are you willing to wait for it? Or do you exhibit no restraint? Listen to the song, and either take another break or write until it’s over.
Haven’t slept in a week? Are you weak, in need of a break? Say “no” to the temptation to stop and write 250 words.
The Room Where It Happens
When you got skin in the game, you stay in the game. But you don’t get a win unless you play in the game. So write 1000 words now, because you’ll get nothing if you wait for it (wait for it, wait!) Schuyler Defeated
It's just a normal day. You spent most of it helping Sam with research, but Dean insists in getting everyone to loosen up, so he forces you to go to a bar with him. Write 100 words in protest.
As soon as you get to the bar, you're attacked by a werewolf. The werewolf knocks Sam out by bashing his head against the side of the building. Dean tries to assist you, but he werewolf rips his chest to shreds. Sprint for five minutes to defeat the werewolf and save your friends!
If you got less than a hundred words, you fail and the werewolf kills the other two hunters. Write 250 words to bring them back to life.
If you wrote 100-200 words, you get your butt kicked, but you survive and drag the other hunters to safety. Write 100 words while you heal.
If you write 201+ words, you're victorious! You defeat the werewolf without getting as much as a scratch.
Exhausted, everyone goes back to the motel. Take your time to write 300 words while you fall asleep.
Where're the other hunters? You wake up alone in the motel room and there are droplets of blood sprinkled across the floor. Write 250 words in ten minutes while you try to figure out what happened.
What's that? Something's under the bed. Do three one-minute sprints while you pull it out.
It's a note! There's only two scribbled words. Demon hoard. What does that mean? Puzzle it out with a five minute sprint.
There's been a lot of demon activity in Indiana. Why they're in the land of corn, you're not sure, but before he disappeared, Sam was talking about a hunt in the area. Could that be where the missing hunters are? You don't have a better idea, so you jump in the Impala and head for boring old Indiana
To ride in silence, write 100 words. All you can think of is the blood on the floor of the motel room. Write another 150 words to shake the thoughts away.
Write 250 words to listen to the best of mullet rock.
Do five one-minute sprints to listen to classical music.
If you want to listen to pop, write 500 words. Shame on you for listening to that namby-pamby stuff.
Finally, you arrive in Indiana. It's late and you're exhausted.
To find a motel room and retire for the night sprint for ten minutes.
To scour the local bar for anyone who might've heard of anything remotely demonic, write 200 words in five minutes.
To read up on recent events in the town, sprint for five minutes.
((The last two options deprive you of sleep. You have to pep yourself up with coffee before you continue. **Write 100 words.**))
You run into a scared teenager who seems to know something. Sprint for ten minutes to talk to them.
If you get less than 150 words, the teenager runs away from you. Write 350 words to find another witness.
If you get between 151-300 words, the teenager freezes and refuses to talk with you until you calm them down. Write 150 words.
If you get 301+ words, the teenager spills everything they know with barely any prompting. That was easy.
You now have a general idea of where the demons are hiding. From what you've heard, it's a pretty big hoard, and there's no guarantee that Sam and Dean are there. You're taking a big chance by going in alone.
To call in a favor and get one of your friends to join you write 500 words.
To go in alone, don't do anything. You might regret this later!
Sprint for fifteen minutes while you wait for nightfall. It's too risky to attack during the day.
Time to gather your weapons! What would you like to take?
To take a gun full of rock salt and a give 'em hell attitude, write 100 words.
To take a recorded exorcism and a salt-covered knife, write 150 words in five minutes.
Lucky you! Sam left behind his demon-killing knife! Write 500 words to claim it.
With your weapon in hand and the full moon shining above you, it's time to attack. You drive up a tiny dirt road and stop about a half a mile from where the demons are camped out in an abandoned house. (*(From this point on, if you brought a friend, you get either five minutes added to each challenge, or you can knock fifty words off your intended target. Glad you called in that favor?))*
A few years out from the house, you run into your first demon. He's tall and lean, but you know you can beat him. Sprint for five minutes to take him out from behind.
If you get less than 100 words, he splits your lips before he goes down. Write 100 words to shake yourself out of a daze.
If you get 101+ words, you win. Keep going!
If you get 250+ words, you not only win, but you find a knife tucked in the back of his jeans. This could come in useful later.
Everything is eerily quite as you creep up to the back door of the house. Do two one-minute sprints to shimmy the lock open.
If you write less than 30 words, your clumsy attempt draws the attention of a demon. Write 200 words to take it out.
The house smells of blood and mold. To your left, there's a door that leads to the basement, to the right there's a staircase that leads to the second floor, straight ahead there's a hallway that leads to the front of the house. Sprint for ten minutes to decide which way to go.
If you write less than 150 words, you run straight ahead. Unluckily for you, that's where the biggest group of demons is conjugated. Write 400 words to fight your way out. *((Once you finish the penalty, go to the last option on this list.))*
If you write 151-300 words, you go upstairs. There are a few demons on lookout duty. Write 200 words to take them out. *((Once you finish the penalty, go to the last option on this list.))*
If you write 301+ words, you go to the basement. Sam, Dean, and Castiel are chained to chairs that face the wall. Write 100 words while you scour the room for a key. (***(If you collected the knife from the first demon, you may skip this step. You use the knife to pick the locks on the chains.))***
With Sam, Dean, and Castiel free, you all go back upstairs to wipe out the remaining demons together. Sprint to the nearest thousand.
When the last demons lies dead at your feet, you all start the trek back to the Impala. The moonlight shines down on you, illuminating the path, and Sam and Dean joke about each other's cowardice like they didn't almost die. Take your time to finish your current scene while you all hop back into the Impala and drive back into town for a round of celebratory beers.
Congratulations! You saved the day! The hunters owe you their lives. Reward yourself with a favorite food, drink, or episode of Supernatural. You deserve it, hero!
It’s the return of the pirate adventure crawl! It was useful to some folks last year so I’m bringing it back, with a few little tweaks. It’s a long one, and can be done in several sessions if necessary. Enjoy!
Part 1 - Casting Off
You find yourself sitting in an old, ramshackle tavern. The air is thick with the smoky stench of tobacco and the slightly sour smell of old rum. Music and drunken shanties mingle with the sounds of clinking dishes and rough voices. You feel something folded in your pocket and you remember- you have a treasure map! This map shows the way to untold riches… more gold and jewels than any pirate could want. Where you got it and the events that brought you here are a bit fuzzy in your memory, but what matters now is that you’re sitting at a table with three different pirate captains. All three of them have invited you to join their crew and lend your map to their pursuit of treasure. You need a ship and a crew if you’re going to get any of that gold at all. You know you must make a choice.
CHALLENGE:
The three captains are all trying to convince you why you should join them. Do a 5 minute word war while you listen to their words.
To your left is a wizened old coat with a gray beard and an eye patch. He grins a near toothless grin. He is Captain Christopher “Cuttlefish” Anderson. He stinks to high heaven and looks as though he hasn’t bathed in a year. His ship is called The Black Shark. He’ll pay you three pieces of eight to join him.
Across from you is a burly Jamaican fellow with a charming smile and intelligent eyes. He’s called simply Captain Tack. He’s dressed in bright colors and has a parrot on his shoulder that constantly repeats what he says. His ship is called The Blood Seeker. He’ll pay you two pieces of eight to join him.
To the right is the only woman in the bunch, Captain Annabelle MacFanning. She looks serious and cold, a true deadly beauty with her golden hair and the flintlock pistol in her hand pointed casually in your direction. There’s a curious gleam in her blue eyes that you can‘t quite identify. She’ll pay you only one piece of eight to join her.
CHALLENGE: Do a 10 minute word war . Your word count determines your result.
More than 500 words: You join the pirate of your own choice. Pick a captain and accept their payment!
500 or less: The pirates get into a fight over you. You are kidnapped by one of them while the other two are busy brawling. Roll the dice to determine who takes you. (you get only one piece of eight with any result).
1 or 2 - Christopher. 3 or 4 - Tack. 5 or 6 - Annabelle.
Your new captain hurries out of the tavern with you, hauling you into the crowded streets of the bustling port town before you can be stopped by the others. You’re pulled along, dodging carts and crowds, until you reach the docks. The sight of the many impressive ships rocking gently in the harbor fills you with a sense of excitement. Ah, the sea! You’re setting out on a true adventure!
“Alright, move your feet,” your captain commands. “Onboard, sailor!”
“Aye!” you say, and hurry up the gangplank. You hear the sound of the sails rustling in the wind and the creak of the wooden planks beneath your feet. As you step onto the ship the captain commands you to stay on deck and heads to the cabin. The busy pirate crew stops their work and looks at you curiously. Since you‘ve been left on your own with no explanation, it’s clear that it’s up to you to make nice with this group of bloodthirsty scalawags. After all, you’re going to be sailing with them on this adventure!
CHALLENGE:
Write 200 words to charm the pirates with your sea shanties and your excellent jigging skills!
The quarter master, who was very impressed, walks up to you. “Welcome to the crew,” he says, “You seem like you’ve got a good head on your shoulders, but where’s your weapon? You’ll need somethin’ to fight with on this ship, popinjay. I’ve got a few spare things I can loan you, but you’ve gotta prove you can use ‘em!”
CHALLENGE: Do a 10 minute word war to show the quartermaster your fighting skills. Your word count determines your weapon!
300 words or less: You get a dagger. Small but sharp.
500 words or less: You get a pistol. Powerful but slow to reload.
More than 500 words: You get a sword - sharp and deadly
You put your new weapon in your belt and the crew cheers, welcoming you on board. You notice one man giving you a strange glare, but he slinks away without saying anything. The captain appears and gives the order to make sail, then calls you to come to the captain’s cabin. You do as you’re told. Once behind the closed door, the captain sits down and invites you to do so as well. You look around at the many riches and odd things decorating the cabin. Even a human skull is nailed to the wall. You gulp nervously. A glass of rum (the really expensive kind) is poured and pushed across the table to you by a bejeweled hand.
“Now,” says the captain, “Let’s have a look at that map, shall we, matey?”
You reach into your pocket and produce said map. Carefully you unfold the aged parchment and spread it out over the table. You’re nervous about sharing it, but the ship is already leaving the harbor. You don’t want to do anything to displease the captain and earn a keelhauling. The captain observes the tattered map closely, smiling a greedy smile as he/she traces a finger over it.
“Aye, this be a special map indeed. How did you find it?”
“Oh, you know captain,” you say, “I heard a rumor from the cousin of a friend who knows a man who romanced a woman who may or may not have had dealings with some sort of mystical sea witch. The usual sort of thing.”
The captain laughs and slaps you on the back. “Good! Now, drink! A toast! To treasure and adventure!”
CHALLENGE:
You raise your glass. The rum is rich and heady and it burns in your belly. The captain pours you another, and another, too excited about the treasure to be greedy with the costly spirits. Roll the dice to determine how many shots of rum you get. Multiply the number x 100 and write that many words.
This drink is extremely strong and you find yourself growing drowsy right away… and then the world fades away. As the ship rolls over the waves, you roll into darkness.
PART 2- Part of the Crew
CHALLENGE: Had a little more than you could handle, aye? Do a twenty minute word war while you sleep off that exotic old spice!
If you’re sailing with Christopher, you wake up cold in the brig, in only your skivvies, without your weapon or your map. Punishment for drunkenness on duty, the captain claims. You must use all your pieces of eight to convince him to let you free. Sprint for 15 more minutes to get yourself back on deck, deal with the teasing of the crew and your horrible headache while you try to find your clothes and weapon.
If you’re sailing with Tack, you wake up right where you fell asleep- in a puddle of your own drool on the captain’s table. He’s nowhere to be seen. Be grateful Cap’n Tack found it funny and let you keep your map and your dignity. Sprint for 10 minutes to clean up and leave.
If you’re sailing with Annabelle, you wake up warm and cozy in a gently-swinging hammock in the crew’s quarters. You’re fully dressed with your map and money. She must be a bit nicer than she looked. Sprint for 5 minutes to climb up to the deck and see what’s happening.
When you get to the main deck you find utter chaos! An enemy ship is drawing near, and the cannons are firing! You jump out of the way just in time; a cannonball rips through a stack of barrels, shattering them with a loud bang. As splinters fall over you and the crew scurries around in action, you know you must do something helpful. You see a pirate thrown back by a blast. The cannon he was firing is now unmanned. Take charge of it and fire!
CHALLENGE: Roll the dice to find out how many cannon balls you fire at the enemy ship! Multiply your result x 100 and write that many words to hit your mark! Go! Go! Go!
Despite your valiant efforts, the enemy ship draws up to your ship‘s port side! Enemy pirates are swinging over onto the deck and into the rigging above your head! They brandish blades and guns and ugly scowls. You’re going to have to fight!
CHALLENGE: Time to do battle!
If you have a dagger you have a difficult time. Sprint for 20 minutes to take down a few rogue pirates but get several wounds in the process and lose a piece of eight.
If you have a pistol you’re able to hide behind some crates and take out several enemies from afar without getting hurt! However, you have a limited number of shots and it takes time to reload. Sprint for 10 minutes!
If you have a sword you jump into battle and hack and slash like a mad creature! You’re covered in blood (mostly theirs) by the time you’ve finished defending your fellow crew! Sprint for 5 minutes and find a piece of eight!
The battle is over! Some of your crew mates fell in the fight, but you managed to help defeat the enemy pirates. Congratulations! You climb over with your mates to the defeated ship to see what you can plunder. Roll the dice to determine what you find!
1,2 - You find five pieces of eight!
3,4 - You find ten pieces of eight, plus a bottle of rum!
5,6- You find five pieces of eight and a strange looking bauble.
When you return to your own ship, a young man wearing a faded scarf shakes your hand. “You’ve proven yourself, mate!” he says, “You saved my life! You’re a part of the crew now!”
You’re not sure how you feel about this, but there’s no time to ponder on it. The ship needs to be cleaned and repaired so you can continue your treasure hunt. The captain gives everyone a specific task.
CHALLENGE: Roll the dice. Multiply the result x 100 and write that many words to get the vessel in ship shape.
The ship is cleaned and repaired for the rest of the journey. The dead are honored and sunken into the sea in a sailor’s burial. By this time night has fallen everyone on the ship is exhausted from the trying events of the day. The captain allows the crew to break out some rum and take some time to relax and rest. A few of the pirates have instruments and they begin to play music to lighten the mood. The young man from before smiles at you. “D’you know any shanties, mate?” he asks, “Sing us a song!”
CHALLENGE: Roll the dice. Your result determines the song you sing (linked below). Open the song in another tab or window, let it play, and sprint for the duration of the song to show off your singing voice to your mates!
1,2 - Mermaids from the POTC On Stranger Tides soundtrack http://youtu.be/yCyj0Or4Fw4
3,4 - No Quarter, by Alestorm http://youtu.be/V-UdrNes2bA
5,6 - Epic Pirate Music Mix: http://youtu.be/cDvH8rfuKyY
The crew loves your performance and rum is passed around. The mood is lightened, thanks to you! If you wrote 300 words your mates give you three pieces of eight and you head to your hammock to sleep.
If you write 500 or more words one of your mates gives you a shiny jewel as thanks for the song. If you wrote less than 300 words, you get no pieces of eight and you have to keep the late night watch in the crow’s nest. Write another 100 words to keep from falling asleep while on duty.
PART 3 - Adventure on the Island
For several days the ship sails on without much happening. There is good weather, fine wind, and the pirates are treating you like a member of the piratical family! .
CHALLENGE: Sprint for 30 minutes to get through this long journey at sea (if you have a bottle of rum, only 15 minutes).
The man up in the crow’s nest suddenly shouts out. “Land ho!” Everyone runs to the railing to look. An island looms dead ahead, like a large turtle shell rising out of the sea. Although it looks like any other island from where you are, you can’t help the feeling of foreboding that descends on you. There is something strange about this island… something unnatural and dangerous. Suddenly you feel as though the treasure may not be worth the risk. Dread wraps around your heart, but there’s nothing you can do now. If you don’t do your part in the treasure hunt then you won’t be getting any of the treasure. It’s your map- you’re going for it!
CHALLENGE:
Write 250 words as the ship is anchored to try and relieve your nervousness. The captain and a few select crewmen climb into the longboat. You join them. As you’re rowed to shore you grasp your weapon tightly in your hand and wonder what strange things await you on this island. Write another 100 words to get to shore.
As you step out of the boat onto the white sandy beach, you look around. The beach rolls on in either direction out of sight and leads up to what looks like thick, impassable jungle. There are two visible paths leading off through the rich flora.
“Which way do we go, navigator?“ the Captain asks you, waiting impatiently. You produce the map and look closely at the aged parchment. Which path do you choose?
CHALLENGE: Do a 20 minute word war . Your word count determines your result! Less than 600 words - You take the path on the left.
600 words or more - You take the path on the right.
“This way,” you say, and the small party heads in that direction. As you step into the jungle you instantly feel like many eyes are watching you. A shiver runs down your spine despite the hot, humid air, but you press on. You walk for a good long while, stepping over roots and cutting through thick vegetation. Insects buzz around your ears and every once in a while you imagine you feel something grabbing at you out of the green shadows. The deeper into the jungle you go, the hotter and harder to breathe the air becomes Suddenly the thick flora opens into a clearing. In the middle of it is a large pool of clear, blue water, fed by a sparkling waterfall. You see something swimming in the water. The air is lighter and you realize, with some alarm, that the path on the map leads straight into the pool.
CHALLENGE:
Write 100 words as you carefully approach the edge of the water. When you get there, a beautiful mermaid appears. She smiles at you and rests her elbows on the ground at your feet.
“Do you have something for me?” she asks. “I can help you if you do.”
If you have a strange bauble or a jewel, you give it to her. Write 250 words as she tells you the direction to take to reach the treasure.
If you have nothing to give her, write 500 words as you try and convince her to help you. In the end she refuses and tells you to leave before she kills you and the others.
You leave behind the refreshing clearing and head back into the jungle. You press on for what seems like hours through the unchanging, stifling, itchy scenery. You look for landmarks along the way. You pass a crumbling statue shaped like a monkey. You see two trees that grew together in a strange shape. All the while you think you hear footsteps behind your party, but you never see anything behind you. The feeling of being watched never ceases.
Finally, as the sun is setting, you reach your destination. The map has lead you to another clearing. It looks like there was once a village here. The foundations of ruined hut-like buildings are everywhere, overgrown with briars and weeds. In the center of the overgrown clearing there is what looks like a building made completely of human bones! You shudder at this sight, but you know that is where the treasure is hidden.
“Who’s gonna look inside, Cap‘n?” someone asks. The captain smirks and looks at you silently. It’s clear that you are the one who has to look in the strange bone building. As you approach it, you and the others are suddenly accosted by dozens of strange enemies! You draw your weapon and swallow your fear- you must fight your way through if you‘re going to come out of this adventure alive!
CHALLENGE:
If you took the left path, you’re fighting living, cursed pirate skeletons! Although they are terrifying, they’re relativity easy to defeat. As soon as you give them a good whack, they’re done for. Sprint for 30 minutes to defeat the skeletons!
If you took the right path, you are fighting crazed zombie monkeys! They’re small, they’re undead, they’re fast, and they’re mean! No matter how fast you are, they seem to always get the better of you. The fiendish little beasts are almost impossible to beat. Sprint for 40 minutes to kill the wicked furry buggers!
Finally you defeat all your undead enemies! You’re exhausted as you stagger to the bone building and grab the door handle (which is fashioned from a skeleton hand). Your wounds are stinging and your chest is heaving. You yank open the door; it rattles and shakes and for a moment the whole building seems like it‘s about to collapse. You tense, but when it stops shaking you step inside. It’s dark and the air smells musty and old. You’re sure that no one has been inside this place for many, many years.
“What d’you see?” one of your mates calls out. You look around and slowly your vision adjusts. The sun is setting outside and so it is quite dark. You soon see that there are three large chests. Your old feeling of excitement and adventure returns. You have found the treasure! What gold and jewels await you? What pearls and diamonds, what items of unknown riches? Of course, you know it can’t be that easy. You take a step further inside. A skull sitting in the middle of the earthen floor suddenly starts glowing! You jump back in fright as a voice startles you, booming from within the illuminated skull.
“You have come to take my ancient treasure! You made it this far, so I will grant you a chance. One of these chests holds my treasure. The other two are cursed! Choose wisely, pirate!”
CHALLENGE
This is it! This is what everything boils down to! Which treasure do you choose? Roll the dice twice. Add your results together, then multiply x 100. Write the final result!
If you succeed in under 30 minutes, choose chest 1, 2 or 3.
If it takes you longer, roll the dice to choose your chest.
1,2- Chest One. 3,4 - Chest Two. 5,6 - Chest Three.
You’ve chosen your treasure. You carefully step over the talking skull and grab the chest. It takes all of your remaining strength to drag the heavy thing out of the bone hut and into the moonlight. You collapse on top of it, completely exhausted, your brown drenched in sweat and your clothing torn and stained with blood. The adventure is over… or is it? The pirates walk up silently, excited but nervous. You tiredly raise your head and look up at the captain, who is standing over you expectantly.
“Well,” the captain says, “Open it, and let’s see what we’ve found.”
“Aye aye,” you say, and you sit back. To your surprise, there is no lock on the chest. Slowly, with hands that shake from weariness- or is it fear? - you grasp the edges of the lid. You take a deep breath, knowing that this may be the best or worst thing to ever happen to you.
You open the chest.
CHALLENGE/ENDING
If you chose Chest One- Congratulations! You chose the correct chest! You behold hundreds of shiny gold doubloons, countless jewels of every color, and exotic and strange items you know are worth a fortune. There are more treasure maps wedged in amongst the treasure, and right on top is a bound leather book. That is the first thing you grab. As the crew dances and sings you flip through it. There are stories, poems, songs, knowledge that is ancient and wonderful. With this you will be able to find a hundred treasures, and write a thousand novels. A thrill of accomplishment courses through you, revitalizing your tired body. You’ve done it- you’ve gone on a pirate adventure and found the treasure! You, captain and crew return to the ship, victorious. The celebration goes on long into the night and when it’s done you’ve decided to become a permanent member of the crew. You’re a pirate, and there is more adventure ahead for you! Write 100 words to end your epic pirate tale!
If you chose Chest Two- you chose a cursed chest. When you open it you are greeted by naught but a black smoke. It swirls and seems to grow, until it surrounds you in a dark mist. You can barely see or hear. Your heart pounds, your thoughts race, your blood runs cold. All of your mates run away in fright, leaving you to your fate. A ghostly face appears in the mist.
“You dared to disturb my ancient treasure…This is a curse of Time… You must return to your arrival to this island and relive your treasure hunt over again!”
Oh no! Will you go through it all again? If you any have pieces of eight you may use them to beg the greedy spirit for mercy… and then write a last 15 minute word war as you trudge back through the jungle to the ship, empty handed.
If you chose Chest Three - you chose a cursed chest. When you open it, an invisible force reaches out and wraps around your throat. You feel a horrible coldness spreading throughout your being, grasping your very soul. You try to scream but no sound passes your lips. Your mates look on in horror, but when they come near to try and help they are forced back. You hear your captain telling them to retreat, and commanding them to leave you to die. Despair fills you as you succumb to the cold and darkness.
When you wake up you find yourself lying there in the clearing. You look down. Your wounds are healed and your clothing is mended. Strangely enough, you feel stronger than you ever have before. As you get to your feet you look up to see a ghostly figure standing before you. You realize this is the crewmember who looked at you strangely on the ship.
“Ye be now cursed as I am,” the ghostly pirate says, “Never dying. Because you fought so hard, ye be stronger now than before.” The figure’s mouth curves into a dark and evil smile. “The ship and the captain who abandoned you are still on the shore. If we hurry, we can catch them.”
You smile a wicked grin. You may be cursed, but you will have revenge on the captain who left you to die. Do a 10 minute word war as you fly back to the ship in your new ghostly form, and take over as the new, undead captain of the ship. A joyful future of pillaging, plundering, and terrifying other ships lies ahead for you.
A Mean Girls word crawl to get you through the last week of NaNoWriMo. Because word crawls are so fetch. And I wanted an excuse to watch Mean Girls.
It's your first day in a public high school after living in Africa with your parents for the last 12 years and being homeschooled. Write for 12 minutes as you adjust to American culture.
Quick! You've got to find a good seat in your first class before they're all taken. Write 300 words in 10 minutes.
● If you succeed: Phew! You got the last good seat in the nick of time. Enjoy the fresh
air.
● If you fail: During the search, you bump into your teacher, spilling coffee on her shirt. You've not only embarrassed her, you now have to sit behind the farter. Write 100 words to distract you from the smell.
So the first day may not have gone so great, but the second day you make new friends, Janis and Damian. They convince you to ditch class and that's when you get your first sighting of the Plastics. Roll a die to get the deets on one of them:
-1 or 4: Karen Smith - she asked Damian how to spell 'orange' once. Write to the next multiple of 1,000 but try not to strain yourself too hard with the spelling.
-2 or 5: Gretchen Wieners - her hair is so big because it's full of secrets. Probably thousands of them. Write 1,000 words.
-3 or 6: Regina George - she's the queen bee. People think it's cool when she punches them in the face. Try to punch out 1,000 words in 30 minutes.
At lunch, the Plastics invite you to sit at their table. Can you follow all of their rules?
-If it’s Wednesday, and you’re not wearing pink: Write 250 words.
-If you’ve worn a tanktop two days in a row this week: Write 200 words.
-If your hair’s been in a ponytail more than once this week: Write 100 words for every day it’s been in a ponytail the last 7 days.
-If it’s not a Friday and you’re wearing jeans or sweatpants: Write 300 words.
-If you broke all of those rules, write an extra 500 words to be able to sit with them.
-If you didn’t break any of those rules, write for 30 minutes as you enjoy lunch with the A-listers.
In 8^(th) period calculus, you meet Aaron Samuels. He’s so cute. You get distracted staring into his dreamy eyes and don’t hear Ms. Norbury’s question. Sprint to 300 words to act like you were paying attention.
Do the Three Digit Challenge to survive your first three-way phone call when Regina tells you that Gretchen’s told her about your crush on her ex, Aaron.
After many titillating conversations about what day it is (Oct. 3^(rd)) and the weather (yeah…it’s raining), Aaron finally invites you to a Halloween party. What’s your costume?
-“Ex” wife/zombie bride – that’s what Halloween is about: Write for 15 minutes for being yourself.
-A dress with animal ears: Write 500 words for following the slut rule.
What a slut. Regina takes Aaron back instead of putting in a good word for you. You plot with Janis and Damian to take her down:
Aaron Samuels (high stakes man candy)
Complete all of the challenges below to get Aaron to find out that Regina’s cheating on him with Shane Oman.
-You post that swim practice has been moved to the projector room above the auditorium where Regina and Shane do their hanky panky. Aaron only finds Shane in his underwear. Write 300 words to get that image out of your head.
-Damian steals your purse in front of Aaron, who chases him to the auditorium room. **Sprint to 500 words!** You only find Trang Pak and Coach Carr making out. Awkward.
-Play dumb at math. Have Aaron tutor you. Spill the beans after you’ve stolen a kiss and he still won’t break up with her. Write 10 minutes to recover from your unceremonious reveal.
“Hot” Body (technically good physique)
-You get the bright idea of giving Regina high-calorie Kalteen bars, which your mom gave to children in Africa to help them gain weight. Write to the next 1,000 words to revel in your genius.
Army of Skanks (ignorant band of loyal followers)
You gotta crack Gretchen Wieners to crack em all. Want me to say crack again? Crack. Complete all these challenges to crack Gretchen.
-Send everyone a candy gram (supposedly from Regina) except Gretchen to make her think Regina’s made at her. Write 100 words for every candy gram. That’s one for Cady, one for Karen, and four for Glen Coco. You go Glen Coco! (600 words)
-Switch places with Gretchen for the annual Jingle Bell Rock dance at the Winter Talent Show. Do a song sprint to Jingle Bell Rock to save the night. Skip this challenge if you know all the words to Jingle Bell Rock. You go…you!
-Write 100 words if you use the word ‘fetch’. And stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen.
Spring Fling nominations are here! Write 450 words in 15 minutes.
-If you succeed: Congratulations, you’ve been nominated for Spring Fling King or Queen!
-If you fail: Sorry, maybe next year. Drown your sorrows in 200 words.
You’re starting to fail calculus to impress a boy. Take out your frustrations on Ms. Norbury in the burn book by writing for 20 minutes.
It’s the weekend! Roll a die to figure out your plans:
-1 or 4: You go to Madison with your parents to see Lady Smith Black Mumbazo. What a good child. Write to the next 1,000 words to feel proud of yourself.
-2 or 5: You support your friend Janis at her art show. What a good friend. Write 400 words because you’re awesome.
-3 or 6: Lie to your parents and your friends and throw a party where you end up puking on Aaron. Sprint to 500 words to try to convince him to stay.
Regina is real angry when she finds out you’ve been giving her nutrition bars for weight gain AND didn’t invite her to the party. She brings the book to the principal, Mr. Duvall, frames you and the Plastics, and spreads copies of it all over the school. The junior girls go wild. Do a song sprint to “It’s a Jungle out there, the Monk theme song. I know, it’s short. Listen to it a few times if you want. I mean, it’s a pretty crazy jungle.
Confession time. Make one, make all four, make however many you want.
-If you’ve ever said anything bad about someone behind their back, write for 10 minutes to make amends.
-If someone’s ever said anything bad about you behind your back, write 300 words to clear up those rumors.
-If you’ve ever felt personally victimized by Regina George, write to the next 1,000 words to recover from the emotional trauma. We’ve all been there.
-If you want to bake a cake made out of rainbows and smiles for everyone to eat and be happy, write out your **feelings for 30 minutes.** Do you even go here?? (I’m just kidding. You all go here, wrimos.)
If you made all of those confessions, you can skip the next round for being so honest!
Janis confesses her plot against Regina and reveals Cady’s role in it. Write 200 words in 5 minutes to catch up with Regina as she storms out of the school.
-If you succeed: You save Regina from getting hit by a bus!
-If you fail: WHAM! Where was that bus driver looking? Write 500 words to make amends.
Your parents found out you’re failing math. You’re – what do they call it? – grounded. You’re grounded. Write 680 words to make up for that last test grade.
You confess to the burn book so the cops will stop searching Ms. Norbury’s place for drugs. To make it up to her, you commit social suicide and join the Mathletes for their competition. Roll a die to see if your answer to the question wins. -Odd number: The limit is -1. Wrong. Write for 10 minutes to study up on limits.
-Even number: The limit does not exist. Right. You won! The limit on your word count does not exist either. Write 1,000 words. CHALLENGE: Write until you hit 50,000 words!!!
You hit up the Spring Fling afterwards and you win Spring Fling King/Queen! You make a wonderful speech to everyone apologizing for being a mean girl/boy and then break up the tiara/crown into about 10 pieces – a little for everyone. Spread the love to your word count and write for 10 minutes.
Congratulations, you survived your first year of public school!
I'm not the original creator of this crawl, if you know who is, please let me know so I can give them credit. Hope you enjoy!
This is a crawl designed for those of us who have short periods of time throughout the day in which to write. If you type fewer than 30 words per minute, I would suggest halving the sprint numbers. If you're a fast typist and have significant periods of time to write, I would suggest doubling the sprints.
Goals of a pub crawl: Have fun, improve your word count, and take the pubs in order! It's always fun to see people's final counts in the original thread, if you'd like to post those here. Hope you enjoy!
Dragon's Breath Inn: This place lives up to its name; it smells, the owner is determined to take all of the gold from you he can, and it's at least 100 degrees F. 5 minute Word War.
**Captain's Daughter:* This place is more reasonably priced. Stick around for a 10 minute Word War*.
A bar brawl breaks out and you leave before the constable arrives. Sprint to the nearest thousand.
Salty Frog Tavern: There might actually be a few frogs living in here, given the state of the roof and the rain pouring in through the gaping hole in the rafters. 5 minute Word War to get out of there as fast as possible.
The Happy Leopard Pub: You can see why someone would want to stick around here! 15 minute Word War.
The Young Fletcher: A little too buzzed after your last experience, you stumble into this Robin-Hood themed bar where you foolishly agree to see who can shoot an apple off your head. Three digits to escape unscathed.
The Broad Minotaur: Settle in here for a monster-sized meal. 10 minute word war.
The Healthy Wizard Tavern: You have no idea who decided that it was a good idea to mix health food with a bar, but the bartender insists that you do a thousand word sprint to work off your gut before he'll serve you anything.
**The Bloated Goat:* This pub's name is the most accurate description of how you feel. Slog your way through a 5 minute word war.*
I did not write this crawl, I'm just posting here for those that may be looking for it. Hope you enjoy!
After such an eventful spring, it was nice to have some time to relax at the Burrow over the summer. But now, it’s time to go to Diagon Alley to buy your books for sixth year. Write 600 words as you pick up all of your necessary supplies.
You go with your friends to visit Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, where Fred and George challenge you to a little game: can you guess which one of them is Fred? Write 750 words in ten minutes in order to make your guess.
If you succeed: You guess correctly (though, to be fair, you had a 50% chance of guessing correctly), and they give you a Galleon.
If you fail: They tell you won, and that your prize is a piece of candy. You eat it without thinking about the consequence. It turns out that they’ve fed you a Fainting Fancy! Write 200 words after you wake up on the shop floor.
You spot Draco Malfoy acting suspiciously, and you, Harry, Ron, and Hermione follow him under the Invisibility Cloak as he goes to Borgin and Burkes. Participate in the Three Digit Challenge as you listen to him talk to the owner about a certain item he needs to repair. If you are in Slytherin, Draco trusts you and lets you come with him into the shop, and you hear the information in person. You may skip this round for free.
Though you were looking forward to spending time on the train with your friends, all of them are either in the Prefect carriage or invited to ride in a compartment with one of the new teachers, Horace Slughorn. Write for thirty minutes as you read in your empty compartment.
At the Start-of-Term Feast, Dumbledore announces that Professor Slughorn will take over as the Potions teacher because Snape is now teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. Write 500 words as you worry about your marks in his class.
During your first Potions class, Slughorn hosts a competition to see who can brew the best Draught of Living Death, and whoever does will receive a small vial of Liquid Luck, or Felix Felicis. Roll a die, multiply your roll by 200, and write that many words as you struggle to make the potion.
Harry is now Quidditch Captain of the Gryffindor team, and you go with Hermione to watch as many people try out for the team. Write 400 words as you cheer Ron on as he tries out to become Keeper. If you are in Gryffindor, you are on the field trying out for the team yourself and may skip this round for free.
The first Hogsmeade visit of the year arrives, and on your way out of The Three Broomsticks, you watch in horror as seventh-year Katie Bell is cursed by an opal necklace. Write 3% of your word count as you help her to the hospital wing and explain to McGonagall what happened.
The morning of the first Quidditch match of the year, Harry pretends to slip Felix Felicis into Ron’s drink at breakfast. This leads to an incredible win over Slytherin, but ruins Ron’s and Hermione’s friendship as Ron begins to date Lavender Brown to get back at Hermione for not believing in his Quidditch abilities. Write 600 words as the biggest feud between your two friends begins.
Professor Slughorn is hosting a Christmas party tonight, and though you aren’t a member of the infamous Slug Club, a fifth year you previously didn’t know existed asks you to go with them. You only agree so you can spend time with Harry and Hermione, because it turns out your date is extremely overbearing and clingy. Write for fifteen minutes as you hide with Hermione from your horrible dates.
Christmas arrives, and this year you spend the holiday with your parents, something you haven’t done since beginning your time at Hogwarts. Write to the nearest thousand as you spend a quiet Christmas Day with your family. They give you a Galleon along with the rest of your Christmas presents to thank you for spending time with them.
During a homework help session with Professor Slughorn as he helps you learn how to perfect that Draught of Living Death, Harry brings Ron down and explains that he had accidentally consumed a love potion and needed an antidote. Slughorn pours all four of you some Mulled Mead and mixes the antidote into Ron’s glass. It cures him of his infatuation, but the mead is poisoned! Harry manages to save him with a Bezoar, and you write 400 words as you spend time with Ron as he recovers in the hospital wing.
It’s time to take your Apparition test, and you get so nervous that you end up Splinching off your left foot. Madam Pomfrey is able to reattach it easily, but makes you write for twenty minutes as you recover. If you are in Ravenclaw, Apparating comes easily to you and you may skip this round for free.
Harry takes some of his Felix Felicis in order to obtain a necessary memory from Professor Slughorn, and feels that he needs to go down to Hagrid’s hut to attend Aragog’s funeral. Ron and Hermione are skeptical, but you tag along and participate in a Fifty Headed Hydra to pay your respects to the giant spider that nearly killed you.
Slughorn came with you to Aragog’s burial, and afterwards, he and Hagrid get drunk in Hagrid’s hut and reminisce, as older men often do. Slughorn hasn’t ever really noticed you, but in his drunken state he invites you to join the Slug Club to make up for the shame he feels in giving Harry the memory he needs. Write 600 words as Harry leaves suddenly to get the memory to Dumbledore, and you’re left to get a very drunk Slughorn back to his chambers. If you are in Hufflepuff, Slughorn cooperates with you as you help him back to the dungeons and you may skip this round for free.
Now that Harry has gotten the memory from Slughorn, it appears that his lessons with Dumbledore are now resulting in a trip outside of the school. Before he leaves, he gives the remaining Felix Felicis to you to give to the others because he thinks that Malfoy’s succeeded in whatever he’s been trying to do. Write for fifteen minutes as you mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of a battle.
After Harry leaves and you’ve taken the Felix Felicis, you go to guard the Room of Requirement, where Harry thinks Draco has been repairing the object he purchased from Borgin and Burkes. When the room opens, the corridor is immediately filled with Peruvian Instant Darkness powder, and when the darkness clears, you’re attacked by a Death Eater who was let in by Malfoy. Write for forty-five minutes as you begin to battle Death Eaters with all the courage you can muster. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to skip this round even if you have enough Galleons to do so.
The battle leads you to the courtyard, and fear grows inside of you when you see the Dark Mark appear over the
Astronomy Tower. Your momentary distraction allows the masked Death Eater you’re dueling to strike you with a Full-Body Bind. Write 750 words before Neville Longbottom sees you and unbinds you.
As Neville helps you to your feet, you see a robed body fall from the top of the Astronomy tower. You run forward and recognize that it is Dumbledore just as his corpse hits the ground. You’re stunned, and you write 100 words as you raise your wand in respect for your fallen Headmaster.
Dumbledore’s funeral emotionally impacts you more than you could have imagined. Write for fifteen minutes as you listen to the eulogies and watch the white tomb be lowered into the ground.
After the funeral, Harry tells you, Ron, and Hermione about the Horcruxes, how the locket he and Dumbledore went to fetch the night Dumbledore died was a fake, and that he needs to track down all of them and destroy them because they contain a part of the Dark Lord’s soul. He doesn’t want you to, but you assure him that you’ll help him on his hunt for the Horcruxes. Write 200 words as the reality that you won’t be returning to Hogwarts sinks in, and prepare for the task ahead.
I did not write this crawl. If you know who did, please let me know so I can the person credit. Hope you enjoy!
The pub crawl for when you haven't got hours to dedicate to your writing today and you're looking for something cheap, quick and easy! We always recommend pacing yourself and drinking responsibly, but that's not what you're here for, are you?
Based on previous Pub Crawls here and here, which are far more likely to get you some hefty word counts. We only guarantee that you'll regret this in the morning, if you can remember it at all.
---------
The Gatecrasher: You've done it again haven't you? You've arrived late to the party, which is already in full swing. Alcohol is flowing freely, and it's no place to be stone cold sober. You have quite a bit of catching up to do if you want to get on this level of intoxication, better do some quick shots with three consecutive 5 minute word wars!
Awkward Small Talk: Those shots haven't really hit you yet, and worse still you run into someone whose name you don't quite remember. They seem to remember you pretty well though. Get out of there quickly with a sprint to 100 words.
Party Trick: You're starting to feel the buzz now, and people are chanting your name. You boasted that you could balance that bottle on your nose for a whole minute, now it's time to deliver! Impress the crowd with your party trick and double your count for the Party Crawl.
On The Dance Floor: That beat is irresistible, and impossible to ignore. No really, that sort of noise has to be breaking any number of noise regulations. Show off your moves and disregard for your eardrums as you sprint to the end of your current song.
Sucker Punch: Dancing like that has worked up quite a sweat. Take a breather and relax by the punch bowl. It's supposed to be spiked, but you can't taste anything worth drinking. Time to scull that drink and sprint to the nearest thousand.
Numbers Exchange: Your dancing has attracted an admirer. Chat them up and get their number. Do the 3 digit challenge.
Bottoms Up: Jelly shots are being passed around, and it's time to drink up. You should probably slow down, but that's only your common sense talking. Do a 15 minute word war, then look for something harder.
Blackout: You've given up on cups altogether and are taking swigs straight from the bottle at the encouragement of fellow party goers. You're not drunk, they're just blurry. Sprint to 1K.
The Morning After: You wake up on the floor on something unidentifiable and sticky. You aren't quite sure where you put your shoes, or whose pants they are. Your head is throbbing as you try to piece your night together and sprint (or limp) to the end of your scene.
I am not the creator of this crawl. I'm reposting this for those that are looking for it. Hope you enjoy!
This summer has been an interesting one for you; you’ve been living with a woman named Mrs. Figg, who lives in Harry’s town. You’ve spent some time with him this summer on orders from Dumbledore, though you don’t know why. When you sense the Dementors on Privet Drive, write 500 words as you and Mrs. Figg go to investigate. If you are in Gryffindor, the Dementors don’t scare you and you may skip this round for free.
You don’t see Harry at all after the incident until several witches and wizards come to pick you and Harry up to take you to 12 Grimmauld Place. Write for thirty minutes during the long broomstick flight to London.
Once you reach 12 Grimmauld Place, you see Sirius for the first time in months, and he tells you and Harry about the Order of the Phoenix. Write 500 words in ten minutes as you try to convince him, the Weasleys, and other members of the order to let you join.
If you fail: You don’t get to join the Order. Sorry about that!
If you succeed: You still don’t get to join the Order… but Sirius is impressed and amused. He gives you a Galleon.
As Harry goes to the Ministry for his trial, you help around the house doing several chores. If you complete all of the chores Mrs. Weasley has for you, Ron, and Hermione to do, she gives you a Galleon. If you are in Hufflepuff, you have already done so much to help Molly and may skip this round for free.
Clean out some of the upstairs bedrooms by writing 250 words.
Write for fifteen minutes as you make dinner and Mrs. Weasley gets some rest. Write 500 words in ten minutes if you help get rid of the boggart upstairs.
September first arrives, and it’s time for you to go back to Hogwarts. Ron and Hermione are prefects and go to sit in their own carriage, so you share a compartment with Ginny, Neville, and Luna Lovegood. Write for 45 minutes during the long ride to school.
At the start of term feast, you notice that Hagrid is missing from the staff table. You also learn that this year’s new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor is Dolores Umbridge, who looks like a toad who was drowned in pink fabric. You soon learn in class that she is a horrible teacher. She makes you write 3% of your word count when you speak out against her in class.
Umbridge is out of control, and her rule over the school is becoming more and more extreme. In secret, you and several others who disagree with her teaching methods meet in Hogsmeade to organize a group that will learn under Harry. Write 500 words during the meeting at the Hog’s Head.
The new group, now called Dumbledore’s Army and forced to meet in secret due to the Educational Decree Number
Twenty-four, needs a place to learn where it won’t be discovered by Umbridge or any of the students in her Inquisitorial Squad. Write for twenty minutes as you search for a place to meet. Dobby tells you about the Room of Requirement, and it is decided that you’ll meet there. If you are in Slytherin, you are also a member of the Inquisitorial Squad to try to sabotage Umbridge and may skip this round for free.
Hagrid has come back to Hogwarts, and you, Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to visit him. Participate in a Fifty-Headed Hydra as he describes the giants to you.
Harry wakes you up in a panic and tells you that he had a nightmare about Mr. Weasley being attacked at the Ministry by a snake. Write 600 words during the long night with the Weasleys comforting them as they discover that what Harry dreamed about was true.
It’s Christmas at 12 Grimmauld Place! Many members of the Order are there, and you spend your break from school getting to know some of the others better. If you complete all of the challenges, take a Galleon.
Nymphadora Tonks: You accidentally call her Nymphadora. Write 500 words as she explains to you that she hates being called by her first name.
Kingsley Shacklebolt: Write for twenty minutes as you listen to Kingsley’s stories about being an Auror.
Alastor Moody: You never really got to know the real Moody last year because of Barty Crouch, Jr. It turns out that he’s really as crazy as you thought he was. Write 300 words in five minutes as he demonstrates several curses on you, much to the enjoyment of your friends.
Arthur Weasley: After Arthur’s accident, you spend more time with him in order to lift his spirits. Write to the nearest thousand as you describe what you know about Muggle objects to him.
After the holidays, one of your Dumbledore’s Army meetings is interrupted when Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad find their way into a meeting after the organization is exposed by one of Cho Chang’s friends. Dumbledore takes responsibility for forming the organization despite having no part of it, and he escapes custody when several Aurors attempt to arrest him. Once he’s gone, Umbridge becomes the new Headmistress. Write 500 words as her grip on the school becomes stricter than ever.
It’s time for you to have a career advice session with your head of house. Your O.W.L.s are fast approaching, and you need to decide what career you want to go into in order to narrow your studies for your last two years at school. However, you don’t know yet what you want to go into! They each have their own advice for you:
Gryffindors: McGonagall seems to think you have a knack for Defence Against the Dark Arts, though she admits that your education hasn’t been the best under Umbridge. Write for twenty minutes as she describes the work that Aurors do. Hufflepuffs: Professor Sprout tells you that your marks in Potions are absolutely exceptional, and that you should consider becoming a doctor at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Write 400 words as you listen to her describe the different potions you would be able to make from the plants in the greenhouses.
Ravenclaws: Divination is your strong suit; at least,it is according to Professor Flitwick. Write for thirty minutes as you demonstrate your skill reading crystal balls for him.
Slytherins: Snape presents your marks to you and berates you for doing poorly in Charms and History of Magic, because he sees you as a great Head Warlock of the Wizengamot. Write 600 words as he gives you studying advice for your upcoming tests.
During one of Gryffindor’s Quidditch matches, Hagrid leads you, Harry, and Hermione into the Forbidden Forest, where he introduces you to his younger half-brother, Grawp. He seems very nice, but he doesn’t understand that it’s not socially acceptable to lift people off of the ground. Write for fifteen minutes as your friends try to convince Grawp to let you down.
Exam time has fallen on Hogwarts, and it’s time for you to take your O.W.L.s. In order to receive the O.W.L.s you need for your chosen career, you must write 1500 words. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to skip this round even if you have enough Galleons to do so.
If you complete this task in under an hour, you receive an O- Outstanding! You’ll be sure to get into all of your N.E.W.T.-level courses, and your parents send you a Galleon to congratulate you.
If you complete this task in under 90 minutes, you receive an E- Excellent! You might not be at the best level you could be, but you make it into all of your required courses.
If you complete this task in under two hours, you receive an A- Acceptable! You have a little trouble getting into your courses, but with a little help from your professors and a little more sweet talk, you’re just fine.
If you fail to complete this task in under two hours, you do not pass your O.W.L.s. However, after begging your Head of House for some kind of exception, you are allowed to move onto your N.E.W.T. courses… but not without writing another 500 words. Ouch.
Harry sends you a message that he believes Sirius is in serious trouble in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry, and he needs you to meet him at Umbridge’s office while he attempts to reach a member of the Order through the Floo Network in the Headmistress’s office. However, you and the rest of your friends are caught trying to give Harry enough time to contact someone. Write 300 words as Umbridge tries to torture information out of you. *If you are in Ravenclaw,* you know how to combat her methods and may skip this round for free.
Hermione’s plan to lure Umbridge into the Forbidden Forest works. She is trapped there, and you, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Luna, and Neville are able to escape the grounds. Roll a die and multiply your roll by 150. Write that many words as you fly to the Ministry.
It was a trap! Sirius is not in the Department of Mysteries at all, but this was a ploy to lure Harry to the Ministry, retrieve a necessary prophecy, and capture him. Write for ten minutes during your first real duel with several masked Death Eaters.
You’ve fought well, but you and your friends are nearly defeated when several members of the Order arrive to help you fight the Death Eaters. With their help, you are able to successfully defeat most of the Death Eaters, but there is one casualty. Write 400 words as you look back and see that Sirius has fallen through the Veil and has died.
Dumbledore appears, and so does Lord Voldemort. This is the first time you’ve ever seen him, and you’re terrified at the sight, even though you already knew that he was back. Write for fifteen minutes as you watch the two most powerful wizards alive battle, simultaneously fearing for your life and in awe at the sight of such powerful magic.
The battle is over, but the war has only just begun. Write 150 words on the train ride back to Hogwarts and think over the dangers that loom in the future ahead.
I am not the creator of this crawl. I am only reposting for those that may be looking for it. Hope you enjoy!
By Emmylou (from NaNoWriMo)
The Hungry Crier: This is a foody sort of place (no pub grub here!) and in your novelling gear you feel rather underdressed. That waiter is even smirking at your ‘Novelists Do it in 30 Days!’ T-Shirt! You decide to get out of there quickly with a quick sprint to the nearest thousand.
The Straight Wheelwright: It’s only when you notice the sparkling umbrella in your drink that you realise that this bar’s name isn’t particularly accurate. Still, who doesn’t love an umbrella in their drink? Plus the music is bouncy and everyone lets you do your own thing. You stick around for a scene war (sprinting to the end of the scene you are on.)
The Lucky Deer: You have no idea why this deer was lucky. This city centre bar used to be a place meat was stored and had now been converted to an underground ice bar. The frost patterns are very pretty and the glasses (made of ice) are very awesome but the rules state you can only stay down here for a short time (possibly to prevent hypothermia, more likely because there’s a queue of people wanting in). You use your remaining time to do a 15 min word war.
The Comet: Oh this is heaven! A themed bar decorated with props from your favourite cult TV shows. The bartender is dressed as Giles, the DJ is playing a Star Trek theme mash-up, and – hurrah! – there’s a TARDIS over by the toilets. This seems like a place to get comfy and do a 30 min word war.
The Laughing Vicar: By now you really are pretty hungry and the Laughing Vicar doesn’t mess around when it comes to food. No finger sandwiches here – they bring you a baguette groaning under eleven different fillings, a bowl of chips, and a complimentary mint chocolate. You had planned to move on quickly but you find yourself a bit too full to move and settle down for a 1k sprint (or slow jog, you are rather full).
The Sleeping Mummy: Oh good lord, this is a student bar! It’s noisy and they are listening to music from your teenage years… but ironically. You get out of there quick, with just a 10 min word war under your belt.
The Dancing Gargoyle: You’re concerned by the advertisement for the ‘LIVE BAND’, but once you get inside the music isn’t too loud. Best of all it’s a tribute band to your favourite musicians and there’s a very familiar looking kazoo player. Feeling much better you manage an Epic Music Writing Hour. (As a tip, the channel has several other long playlists so if you want something new try one of those.)
The Woodcutter: This is an old school country pub, in fact it’s so rural that it takes you over an hour to find it and by that time the snow is falling heavily. You hang your scarf and gloves to dry in front of a crackling fire, order a hot toddy, and do the 3 digits challenge. Remember, the quicker you go the less chance you have of getting snowed in!
The Brass Angel: OK. You’re tired. But the end is in sight. Only two more to go; and the Brass Angel is very inviting. The barman is very sympathetic and listens to you bemoan your novel, cry over your characters, and sheepishly confess your inability to spell the word ‘disappeared.’ Being a good barman indeed he keeps the drinks a-comin’ but gently points out that drink won’t make your problems go away. In a mad rush of drunken optimism you agree to another 1k sprint.
The Victory Inn: Victory is within sight for your novel, and even more so for your pub crawl! Unfortunately its karaoke night here at the Victory Inn and you are a little tipsy. In time honoured tradition of pub crawls you put your name down for Something Stupid. Thankfully you aren’t going to be crooning any Sinatra… the something stupid you signed up for was an 90 minute word war. To victory!!
...seems to have been pushed to a release of December 8 now.
...it's raining today, I hope you're still having a good day in some way.
Hasbro has a great opportunity for Peter Cullen's fans. Now, I'm not sure if this is something that his family would allow, but I think it would be a banger of an idea.
Hasbro could make a talk Optimus Prime that not only transforms into him in robot mode and truck mode, but also into Peter Cullen mode. And maybe, they could include his brother's advice in his voice, "Be strong enough to be gentle."
I think the fans would love that!
Earth 916, Monday, November 30, 2026
Gertrude turned her attention to the red-blinking screens. “Someone turn those alarms off! I can see the screens!”
“Yes, ma’am! Right away,” responded one of her subordinates.
The metal surrounding her stood in stark contrast to the landscape on the screen.
“Why’s this on my screen? Report!”
Only one brave soul dared answer, “It seems something has been detected in that area, ma’am.”
“Obviously! Otherwise why would the alarms’ve gone off? Can you tell me what was detected?”
“We’re working on it, ma’am,” replied the brave soul.
“Report on my desk in fifteen or heads will roll!”
“Yes, ma’am,” the brave soul answered with his nervous tic making an appearance.
“You okay, soldier?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Good. Report on my desk in fourteen!”
Gertrude stood there looking at the screen for any clues about the landscape. There didn’t seem to be any.
After phone calls from various department heads, she took a moment to retreat to her office.
Just as she pulled her chair out from her desk, her door flew open and in rushed a young woman from engineering.
Before she could bark at the intruder, Gertrude realized it was Alice, who she served with in the past.
“You keep doing that and one day is going to be one day too many!”
“I’m sorry, Gertie. But this is urgent!”
“Now’s not the time, Alice!”
“The Inhumans, Gertie! It’s…THEM!”
At the mention of the Inhumans, Gertrude’s face contorted, then returned to its normal unhappy look. “What about…them, Alice?”
“Remember they covered the planet with the mist years ago? The alarms! They detected a device with the same signature.”
Gertrude looked at the landscape on the screen and back to Alice. “You want to go, don’t you?”
“It’s an engineer’s dream, my dream, to have the chance to dismantle one of those devices, Gertie.”
“Fine!”
As Gertrude was about to dismiss Alice, in walked the one brave soul with a report.
“What’s this, soldier?”
“The report you asked for, ma’am.”
“You mean the report about the Inhumans?”
“Yes, ma’am! Exactly, ma’am!”
Gertrude picked up the report and flung it at the soldier. “Next time give me information I don’t already know, soldier!”
That nervous tic made another appearance.
“You okay, soldier?”
“Yes, ma’am!”
“Good! Dismissed!
“And soldier…”
“Yes, ma’am?”
“You should get that checked out! Dismissed!”
The soldier, with his shoulders slumped, turned and walked out.
“Alice, get a team together.”
Gertrude took one look at Alice biting her lip and knew she wanted to ask something.
“What is it, Alice? Out with it!”
“Does the team have to be all military personnel? I know another engineer who may be able to help us.”
“Who do you have in mind?”
“Earl…”
“Turner? Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
“Wasn’t he the guy you were seeing at one point?”
“Yes, that Earl. I know things didn’t end well, but…”
“Why would you want to bring him along, Alice? This is serious business. This isn’t time to see if there’s a spark there.”
“That’s not it at all, Gertie. Even after Earl and I broke up, he was still always there to help me in college. I think he’d help us now. He’s always been a patriot.”
“Then recruit him!”
“Will do, Gertie!”
“And Alice…”
“Yes, Gertie?”
“Out in the field, it’s Gertrude. Dismissed!”
Alice nodded her head, turned around, and headed to her office.
When Alice got to her office, she immediately dialed Earl’s number on the secure military phone.
After only two rings, someone on the other end answered, “Hello?”
“Stop acting like you don’t know who this is, Earl.”
“Alice! I’ve heard rumors on the dark web. I wasn’t sure if they were real or not.”
“They’re as real as Thor and Loki, Earl.”
“You need my help, don’t you?”
“Not just me this time, Earl. The military needs you.”
“You know they rejected me, right? You pulled me out of that terrible time of my life.”
“I remember, Earl. But you’re the only one I could think of that would be able to help me in a pinch. You’ve always done it before.”
“Then I have one question for you, Alice.”
“What’s that?”
“Why would today be any different?”
Meanwhile, Gertrude was on the phone with S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury.
“Gertrude, what is it?”
“It’s the Inhumans, Director Fury.”
“You’re calling about the device?”
“Yes, Director. We have engineers to examine it, but there’s a problem.”
“What’s that?”
“We don’t have anyone to guide us there. It’s on top of a mountain. Can’t use vehicles and can't fly in."
“You want me to send one of my best agents to guide the military to the top of a mountain? You think I have sherpas working for me?”
“Thanks, Director.”
“Wait, hold up. I may not have any S.H.I.E.L.D. agents for you, but I may know a guy. Name’s Conrad, Conrad Walker.”
“You’re just going to send me some guy named Conrad? That’s not like you, Director.”
“He tends to travel a lot. He’s probably been up and down that mountain more times than you’ve yelled this week.”
“Understood, Director. Thank you. The military always appreciates your help.”
Without saying a word, the other line went dead.
Tuesday, December 1, 2026
The next morning, Gertrude pulled up in her military jeep with Alice beside her. Earl arrived in a beat-up jalopy, while Conrad showed up on a bike.
Alice gets out of the jeep as Earl opens the door for Gertrude.
Gertrude takes one look at Earl.
Alice says, “Gertrude, meet Earl.
“Earl, meet Gertrude.”
Without a thought, Earl immediately stood at attention and saluted.
“You’re not a soldier, civilian. At ease before you hurt yourself.”
“Yes, Colonel,” Earl said relaxing…barely.
And looking over at the other man walking toward her, Gertrude said, “And you must be Conrad Walker.”
“Yes, ma’am. One of Fury’s agents contacted me saying he needed me to meet someone here that, and I quote ma’am, “…needed a sherpa.”
Without another word, Gertrude knew this was Conrad Walker.
“Now that we’re acquainted, I’m sure you all know by now there’s a device at the top of this mountain that we have to get to.”
Conrad’s mouth opened slightly.
“Conrad will be leading us up the mountain. Do as he says. He is, as he said, our sherpa for this leg of the mission.
“Go on, civilian, fill us in.”
After closing his mouth, Conrad spoke. “It would take about four hours to get to the top. With the strong winds, that would be an issue…”
“I thought Fury said you know this mountain, civilian. Four hours seems quite a while.”
“That’s four hours if you don’t know the mountain. I can do it in about two-and-a-half hours. With the three of you along, might take closer to three hours.”
“Very well, civilian. Lead on.”
“We’re going to rope up for the climb. I’ll lead, then Alice and Earl, with the Colonel having our backs.”
Though she said nothing, Gertrude shot daggers with her eyes at Conrad.
Once they were roped up and all the equipment was checked twice, Conrad said, “Let’s climb!”
The climb from the base wasn’t eventful. Then they got about halfway up and that’s when the ridges became an issue.
“Up ahead, you’ll have to keep your back to the mountain and don’t look down,” Conrad instructed the others.
Conrad could feel the rope losing its tension. “Who’s walking fast?”
“Trying to get this mission over, civilian!”
“I understand, Colonel. Here on the mountain though, you’re not the one in charge.”
“If you were my subordinate…”
“I don’t think you understand, Colonel. I’m not in charge either.”
Alice asked, “Then who is in charge?”
Conrad simply answered, “The mountain.”
After a few more carefully placed steps, Conrad felt the tension in the rope tighten again.
After the wind whipped through, Alice said, “It’s so exciting that we’re half way there. Been waiting a long time to see one of these devices.”
Conrad stopped for a moment, looks back at Alice. “One of what devices?” he asked.
“The Inhuman device on top of the mountain. Didn’t you know?”
“Inhuman device? Up there? Are you sure?”
“That’s what the data tells us. Why?”
Conrad didn’t reply to that question. “Come on, we have to pick up the pace if we’re going to keep good time.”
Earl asked Alice, “So, where were you when the Mist came?”
“I was hunkered down in a bunker with Gertrude. We had gotten an early warning, so were able to take shelter. How about you?”
“I was in my workshop.”
“That’s it? In your workshop, civilian?”
Without turning to face her, Earl answered Gertrude, “Yes, I was in my workshop trying on one of my prototype exoskeleton. Glad I had installed the air filtration system that morning.”
“And what about you, Conrad? Where were you when the Mist covered the planet?”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” he responded as he continued climbing.
“Come on,” Alice egged him on. “We all shared where we were.”
“I was having lunch.”
“That’s it? Lunch?”
“Yes, lunch…in Atlantis.”
The other three simply looked at Conrad as if he had two heads.
“The sun is getting to its zenith, we should be close to our destination,” Conrad informed the others.
With much less small talk, the group reached the top of the mountain. Gertrude recognized it from the landscape that was on her screen the day before.
Gertrude, feeling as though she’s in control again, barks, “Alice, Earl, locate the device.
Conrad however says, “Before we do anything, let’s get our climbing gear off first. We don’t want to be roped together forever, do we?”
Alice and Earl each quickly removed their gear, while Gertrude took a bit longer.
“Having some trouble, Colonel?”
“Seems this stubborn rope doesn’t want to let go of me.”
“Let me take a look,” Conrad said, walking over to her.
With a quick hand movement, the rope was off. “There you go, Colonel.”
“Thanks, civilian.
“As I was saying, Alice, Earl, locate the device!”
“Yes, ma’am,” was the response in stereo.
In the meantime, Conrad wandered off to a couple rocks that were piled up. He knelt down and removed the rock that was in front.
Gertrude’s shadow was soon towering over Conrad.
“What are you doing, civilian?”
“It’s nothing, Colonel.”
“Civilian, I may have had to trust you to get us up here and trust you to get us down, but right now, I’m in charge. I need to know whatever it is you know.”
“Not about this, Colonel.”
“This is not up for debate, civilian!”
“If you must know, Colonel, it’s my brother.”
“Your brother? What does he have to do with this?”
For a moment, Conrad knelt there in silence, holding back the tears.
“Civil…Conrad, what happened to your brother?” Gertrude asked with a hand on his shoulder.
“He passed away suddenly last year, end of the summer.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, Conrad. That still doesn’t explain…,” she gestured to the rocks.
“He and I used to climb together. I was always the lead, not sure if because I was his older brother or he just always trusted me to watch out for him.
“I came up here alone October of last year. I knew it was foolish to climb alone, but I wasn’t really. I had my brother with me.”
“I thought you said…,” Gertrude started as Alice and Earl joined the two of them.
“What’s going on over here?” Alice asked. “You two having a pow-wow while we do all the work?”
Gertrude gave Alice a look and Alice understood. Then Alice gave Earl a look and he knew too.
Conrad went on, “I did say he passed before that climb. But he was still with me that day,” he said, reaching into the rocks and pulling something out.
Alice’s eyes lit up. “How did you know that was there, Conrad? I thought you didn’t know we were looking for a device.”
Conrad looked up to her with a confused look. “What are you talking about?”
“You’re holding the Inhuman device we’ve been looking for. I’m certain of it! Just look at the markings.”
“You must be mistaken. You have to be!”
Earl took a look at the object and confirmed what Alice was saying. “Those are definitely Inhuman markings.”
Conrad hugged the device to his chest so tight they thought he’d never let it go.
Gertrude asked, “What did you think it was?”
“My brother and I found it on one of our hikes one day. We thought it looked nice, so we kept it. When he passed, he was cremated, so…,” he said, looking at the object.
“You sprinkled his ashes on the mountains?” Earl asked.
“No. He’s in here,” Conrad said, looking at the object.
“You were lucky, civilian. There could have been Terrigen spores inside. Opening it could have released Terrigen into the air, and anyone with Inhuman genes could have transformed.”
“Don’t need more Inhumans running around, do we Gertrude?” Alice asks teasingly.
“We certainly don’t,” she responded.
“Since we’ve found what we came for” Earl said, “perhaps we should start down the mountain?”
“We’re not taking my brother with us,” Conrad protests.
“Sorry, civilian, it’s not my choice. I’ve been instructed to bring the device back.”
“But my brother…”
“Sorry, civilian, it’s out of my hands. Get everyone geared up.”
Reluctantly, Conrad got the others geared up, then himself, to descend the mountain.
Before they left, Gertrude went over to Conrad. “Civilian, by order of the United States Army, I am commanding you to carry this alien device down the mountain, until we get to the base.”
Conrad took the device, smiled at Gertrude, and said, “Yes, Colonel. It will be my honor to serve.”
Alice reached behind her to squeeze Earl’s hand.
A single tear rolled down Conrad’s cheek on to the device.
With few words between any of them, they reach where they have to keep their backs against the mountain.
The wind comes whipping through and another tear from Conrad lands on the device.
Less than two hours later, they arrive back at the mountain base.
Before they’re able to unrope though, they hear a hissing over the whistling winds.
“What is that hissing?” asks Earl.
“I don’t know,” responds Alice. “Sounds like somethings being released.”
Moments later, a blanket of Terrigen mist covered the four of them.
Where four people had stood moments ago, four cocoons now lay on the ground.
This was my first group of characters I created with stunts in mind. I used the Avengers expansion and the Core rulebook only.
If you notice any inconsistencies, please let me know. If you have any questions, ask away.
If you like any of the iconic items or any of the characters, feel free to take them and make them your own.
For this character I was thinking of a pair of bracelets that the character found on one of her adventures. The bracelets unlocked her power to construct magical claws that come from the bracelets. I was thinking of a former law enforcer bound to a wheelchair. But the wheelchair transforms into a battle suit she can wear into battle. While wearing the suit, it reminds her of the freedom she’s lost and causes her to be angry against the world. The battle suit and character were built around the stunt Jet-Ram.
With Magical Spider Chest Plate
Special Training, Magic Rank 4 Educator. Traits – Tech Reliance, Determination, Connections: Community, Font of Information, Presence, Beguiling, First Aid, Extraordinary Origin, Magic Item Reliance. Tags – Convict, Villainous. M 3, A 5, R 4, V 2, E 4, L 4. Powers – Accuracy 2, Mighty 2, Brilliance 2, Discipline 1, Iconic Item: Magical Spider Chest Plate, Spider-Strike, Webcasting, Webslinging, Additional Limbs, Evasion, Slow-Motion Dodge, Stunt: Old One-Two
I needed a character that had a power that split the attack between two targets and did half damage to both. I chose the Spider-Strike power, because the others are from Melee and Ranged power sets. I made an ordinary person into a villain. When she constructs her spider chest plate, magical spider legs appear giving her spider-powers. For this item and character I was going for the Old One-Two stunt.
Excelsior!
