Fawn in FC Polychromos- tips welcome for getting detail in mini animal portraits!

Just finished this cutie. Been trying to do quicker and smaller drawings in my art journal. Trying to learn how to get detail in there while keeping it small so I can do mini pet portraits as gifts. This is about 4x6. Do you all have any tips that have helped you make smaller drawings without losing detail and quality? I’m thinking I’d like to aim for closer to 3x2 or like a 4x4 square.

First, I would like to say thank you to everyone for the input and kind words about my lemon painting! I decided to try adding this blue background (definitely wasn’t trying to be meticulous here so it’s a bit of a mess) and I think it really tones down the harshness of the outlines and makes it look more cohesive! I will probably recreate this painting in the future without the outlines and just the darker background for contrast.

I am mainly a colored pencil artist, but like to play around with paint sometimes. I painted some lemons in watercolor today just for fun. I outlined the subject in ink once I finished, and I can’t decide if I like the look of it more with or without the outlines. What do you think?
