Active Hatred of Colored Pencils-Change My Mind

I love almost every art form, I love writing, I love water colors, I love pencil, I love acrylic, I love sculpting, I love carving, I love to take my necklaces & stuff apart & depict scenes from ancient mythologies, I love art.

I love putting water drops down on watercolor paper & adding ink to produce this water ink effect, I can do it in a moving car I’m so comfortable with this medium.

Also oil painting, I think we all love the oil paints.

I actively hate colored pencils.

Hate. Hate. Hate.

These things don’t blend, my hbd feels like it’s going to fall off, I feel like an old man on viagra, I’m scribbling but it’s not going much of anywhere.

What do I do to stop hating color pencils. They’re way easier to pack around than like a box of pastels.

What am I doing wrong with these abhorrent sticks of wax, color & unadulterated suffering. How do I make them do the beautiful thing that I see on the internet, I just watched some girl scratch up her own colored pencils with a razor blade & it spoke to my little heart in a way that is hard to describe in words.

Seriously, how do I blend colored pencils?

First bird drawing :)

Here’s my ongoing piece (it’s an Indian Roller). btw, this is my first attempt at drawing a bird, and it’s quite difficult ngl, especially the feathers. Nevertheless, I hope y’all like it!

Art using colored pencils for $1

Is it good? I love it very much and I enjoyed drawing it a lot. ❤🖤

Has anyone tried these?

The colors look interesting and I like other Tombow products but these have mixed reviews so I wonder what people think of them. I do like that you can buy the three sets one at a time and won't repeat colors, and the packaging looks nice.

This is a new medium for me, I have a question about light values.

I’m a beginner with colored pencils, I am more used to regular pencils and paint so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I have a set of prismacolor premier pencils and the lighter colors don’t seem to provide a lot of pigment, the light areas of this drawing were done using mostly negative space and the white pencil seems to be great for blending but not adding light where I need it. Is there a specific kind of colored pencil that can help me with adding lighter values?

Solvent advice

I’m using Artagain 400 Series black paper. I wanted to try to do some slight blending of Polychromos before adding lighter highlights with Luminance.

Before using it on my actual piece, I tested some techniques using Gamsol and Vaseline on this paper with a few layers of Polychromos, and it pulled up the pigment nearly completely. I tried it with a cheap paintbrush and a q-tip and blotted both with a paper towel first.

Does this paper simply not have enough “tooth” for this kind of solvent blending? Or is it that I needed more layers of pigment? Or do you need to have barely any solvent on the tool?

If the first—is black pastelmat or Stonehenge Aqua then my only black paper option?

Bee portrait I did over the weekend

Did this piece of a honey bee over the weekend. Nice subject to turn the head off and draw. It’s important to keep the hand moving regularly.
He’s A3 in size, drawn on Art Spectrum pastel paper with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils.

Memorial portrait WIP and my attempt at a bokeh background

Finally feeling like I’m getting better at making realistic fur, but all the while torturing myself with a full colored pencil bokeh-ish background. A lot of the fur below kitties head is white and I had a hard time visualizing it against an all white background, so here we are. I know it’s not perfect, but I at least get the idea of background trees and blue sky. 🤷‍♀️
