Still deciding if the LG 27GM950B-B is a keeper
I just picked up this LG GM9 and so far it’s an interesting monitor. I believe my objective was to see how close of a match this could be to pair with my m5 MacBook Pro Display and have as a side monitor to my pg32ucdp. I also wanted the extra ports for windows and switch 2 gaming.
So this far I’ve been messing around with settings and a couple of notes:
- design-wise this monitor looks kind of nondescript unless you look at the backside. Mine didn’t even have an ultra gear logo on the front.
- with the matte screen and decent internal brightness it fights off my morning sunshine fairly well. I do believe my pg32ucdp does it better.
- DCI-P3 works fairly well with my mac M5 Pro after some tweaks - R 54, G 49, B 51. (Still messing around with this). Also better displays app fully recognized this device for software control.
- AI upscaling works with Nintendo switch games. It’s just extra sharpness, but welcome. The AI Scene optimization I kept off.
- Windows HDR after calibration was fine for gaming. I paired this with dynamic tone mapping turned on prior to calibration.
- windows gaming was generally great, WoW looked sharper and more immersive than ever for an aged game. Arc raiders compared well except for some dark areas it couldn’t match the OLED in. It’s weird too I also prefer the 27” size compared to the 32” for PC gaming.
- I bought this for the miniled function and so far I have kept this on low for all inputs. Any higher and you start crushing dark details. Turning it off completely turns it into an IPS only display.
- NOTE: my thunderbolt 4 usb c cable and HDMI 2.1 cables could not unlock 5K until I used the monitor’s own usb c cable and HDMI 2.1 cable, I’ll have to investigate this more but this monitor is picky with cables.
- ISSUE: Black stabilizer resets to 50 after switching inputs even if the game mode option has it set to a different value (I typically keep this at 0)
- ISSUE: blooming on white cursors on black backgrounds. Not sure if this can be tweaked with an update. For now I’ve switched cursors to black.
Im still not sure if this a keeper or if I’ll swap over to a studio XDR or, 3rd option, if I’ll add it to combo with this monitor and make a 2nd computer station with it.
