Orchestral score reduction and voices

Hello, is there any good book that talk about the method of doing an orchestral score reduction ? Do you combine doubling until we are left with all the different pitches and do we talk about voice in this context ? Like the soprano voice is played by this and this instrument at that octave ?

Thank you

Can codex ask interactive clickable questions like claude code?

Hello, I am a new codex user, and I am wondering if codex can ask me questions the way claude does. One question, 4 answers, and I click on the answer to fine tune the plan

Hello, I had a feature in claude code, where it gave me a clickable play button, that I used to open the latest build. I struggle explaining this to codex, it just gives me a bash link that I need to copy paste on terminal, is there a way to have it in codex chat ?

Voice leading in common practice, can I rotate the 3 upper voices ?

Hello, once again another voice leading question, say we have 2 chords that are voiced in a way that respect common practice rules, can we rotate the 3 upper voices and it still remains correct in every way or does it fundamentally change our intervals?

Exemple give the notes played by the alto to the soprano, so shifting octaves..

voice leading in cpp and interval quality

Hello, I am reading Tchaikovsky Harmony book and I am studying the provided voice leading exemples, mostly given as major triads in C Major. Some of them have minimal movement other are more jumpy, but still balanced by respecting some rules, I get it so far.

Obviously the examples will work in any transposed key, but can I transpose an exemple to the parallel minor key and still be sure it will be correct in the same way, regarding parallel fifth etc. ? I assume I can, because wether we use the M3 or the m3 in chord doesn't change much the interval name but I am not 100% sure

Does voice leading matter when doing chord figuration/ostinato/accompaniment?

Hello, maybe it's a dumb question but when I go from strict linear 4 part harmony, to real music with chord arpeggio, various accompaniment (Alberti bass and whatnot) do we need to apply the same voice leading rule or do we stick to just how the accompaniment is generally composer (like always play root - fifth - 3rd - fifth etc)

confused about the concept of "voice"

Hello, I am confused about bridging the concept of "voice" in part writing and voice leading with orchestration. Is one instrument = 1 voice ? Are 2 instruments that play unison the same line considered one voice ? what about instruments that double at the octave ?

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction

edit : thanks for your answers. A follow up question would be how many different voice a texture usually have at any given time, in the context of classical era then romantic era. I guess we can go from 1 voice texture to .. what 8 or 9 voices ?

Looking for an open source music notation dev ressources for my own software

Hello, it’s kind of a special question, I have a custom music software on macOS coded using swift and swiftUI. I could render nice looking score sheet with noteheads, accidentals, clefs etc. The issue is that I only have one possible note length value and equal spacing between noteheads (it’s a prototype).

I was wondering if anyone is aware of an open source algorithm that could help with the calculation the horizontal spacing layout logic in a notation software (bar width in pixels depending on how many notes and note length etc.)

Thank you

studying counterpoint and SATB voice leading : how does it relate to orchestration

Hello, I am studying counterpoint and general voice leading rules in SATB style. But the moment I am starting an orchestration book or a video course, I am completely lost.

This sound dumb but I need to name things. In SATB each voice have it's own name and everything is crystal clear, but put the same chord in an orchestra and now we no longer have 4 notes but maybe 10 notes spread across 10 instruments so 10 voices ? how do you even monitor for good voice leading when you have that many voices for 1 chord

Please bring some light to a newbie

thank you

need advice on a thin rgb led strip

Hello guys, this is the first time I am going to buy LED strips. I want a thin addressable RGB strip on the back panel of my digital piano, just above the keys. It'll be driven by custom software on my Mac to light up depending on some conditions.

my main constraint is height. Right behind the strip is a row of knobs and faders I reach over constantly. Anything tall will get in the way. I want the slimmest profile possible — ideally under 5 mm total.

Specs I need:

- Addressable RGB (WS2811 / WS2812B / SK6812 — open to anything common)

- ~1.2 m usable length, cuttable with scissors

- Smooth glow, no visible LED dots (I read that COB is better for that)

- 5V / 12V / 24V — flexible on voltage I don't really care ??

Currently looking at the BTF-LIGHTING FCOB COB WS2811 24V 3m** on amazon + 24V 3A power Supply + GLEDOPTO ESP32 WLED Elite Controller

Does COB really look smooth at close range (~50 cm from my eyes)

About the GLEDOPTO ESP32 WLED Elite Controller but this seems wifi/ethernet only, I'd like something that can just be plugged to my mac with usb, any advice on that please ?

Thanks!

Hello, I have been using 2 external monitors (one 27 inch 2160p 75hz) display port to display port on the TS4, and a second one 1080p 24hz HDMI to rear usb-c.

It has been working fine for months, but since I changed my desk and rewired everything, something is weird, my 24 inch monitor wouldn't work and would not get detected as a monitor on macOS settings. It still displays on the monitor "choose to extend display etc." so the monitor is aware he is connected to something. I tried various way and the only solution I found was to use my VGA port on the 24 inch to a VGA/usb-c adapter and plug that directly into the MacBook Pro TB port and it works.

It works but quality on the 24 is not very good, flickering etc.

What would you recommend me as a setup to connect 2 external monitors ? Maybe I'll change the cables, maybe I'd invest in a new secondary 24 inch monitor, but in either case what port should I use ? Plug both on the TS4 ? one one the TS4 and one on the MacBook ? which connectivity to use to avoid issue ? this will help me choose a good monitor

thank you

Hello, apart from carbon copy cloner on 2 different external ssd I have no offsite backup, sometimes a zip of precious files on iCloud but that’s ridiculous, I would like to backup all the internal 1to drive.

What solution on the cloud are you using ?
