Progress! Down 2lbs!

My boy, Moon, was hanging out around 12.6-12.8 lbs but he's a pretty small-boned cat (and therefore body condition score was not good) so the vet recommended we get down to around 10lbs and see what his body condition looked like.

We tried different types of food (high protein, different protein types, prescription weight loss food) and different feeding styles (fewer meals, more meals, meals more concentrated at night vs morning) and nothing worked, but ultimately what cracked the case was wet food! We switched about a third of his calories from dry to wet food (originally it was ~1/8 of his calories) and he started making progress!

We're now at 10.8 lbs after five months! He's become much more playful and active and his body condition looks pretty good (more of a 6 than the 8 he was when we started), but we'll see what the vet says in terms of any more weight loss.

The best thing about this is that now he can spend time in his catio during the summer! I was a bit nervous about letting him be out there in the heat when he was so overweight, just because I didn't know if he'd really be able to judge when he needed to cool down inside.

Update: neighbor party house

I posted a year ago about our terrible new neighbors who partied hard three times a week on the regular. Throwing trash, loud music, screaming outside at 3am, and most egregiously, parking their various cars on our lawn. The update is a good one.

I started documenting and complained to the city about the noise. Then again. Then I started leaving dog poop by the driver's side doors of cars when they parked on my lawn. I picked up trash they threw and wedged it between their side mirror and the car door. They were upset by this and tried to confront me, but ultimately stopped parking on our yard. Instead, they started parking on the sidewalk (like literally horizontally, parallel to the street, pulled onto the sidewalk). This proved to be their downfall. More people complained about that because it's an accessibility issue, especially being a main secondary street. The businesses down the street complained too because of the noise and litter. It quickly snowballed into multiple people complaining to both the city and the landlord (well-known slumlord in the city).

Couple months later, the people weren't given the option of renewing their lease because they were getting too close to nuisance house status and promptly moved. And then! The landlord put the building up for sale because those people had completely trashed it so one of the business owners bought it and *knocked it down*. No more party neighbors ever again!

Moral of the story, be the squeaky wheel, and find the pressure point that will make other people care too.

▲ 4 r/Catio

Hi everyone, I'm starting to build my catio and realized I planted my native bed just a little too close to the house. I have two choices: move it further away to accommodate the catio or move it just a couple inches toward the house to be included inside the catio.

My concerns are twofold: potential litterbox problems and bee stings. My cat is not one to chase flying insects, but he hasn't had a lot of exposure to them so that's not ironclad.

The plants in the planter are confirmed totally non-toxic and they'll get plenty of rain, being in the non-roofed section. My cat is also only interested in grass-like plants of which there are none in the planter.
