Non-native teachers: why are we still being paid less for the same 30-minute lesson?

As a non-native teacher from Asia, I’ve seen offers as low as $2 for a 30-minute lesson regardless of experience, qualifications or teaching quality.
Meanwhile, a native English speaker with barely 10 classes of experience can sometimes be offered $10+ for the same 30-minute lesson.
That’s a 5x difference for essentially the same work.
I understand that native-speaker status can matter in ESL, but at what point does “preference” become discrimination?
What’s even more frustrating is the white/native-speaker preference you see in parts of the East and Southeast Asian ESL market. And yes, racism and colourism aren’t only Western issues, Asian societies can have plenty of their own biases around skin colour, nationality and Western identity.
Why is someone’s passport or place of birth still valued more than their actual teaching ability?
Curious to hear from both native and non-native teachers: what pay differences have you experienced?

Pakistani teacher looking for guidance about ESL jobs in China

Hi everyone,
I’m from Pakistan and I’m currently looking into ESL teaching opportunities in China. I have applied for some ESL jobs, but I’m facing a lot of challenges and I’m a bit confused about the process.
I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience teaching in China, especially other foreigners or teachers who know about the process for Pakistani applicants.
I would like to know:
What are the best platforms or agencies to find genuine ESL jobs?
What qualifications are usually required?
How difficult is the visa process for Pakistani teachers?
Any tips or things I should be careful about?
Any guidance or personal experiences would be really helpful. Thank you!
