How realistic is it to jump straight to a 40ft boat?

Wife and I have been traveling full time for 6+ years, looking for a way to “settle down” slightly and have a little more space and more projects.

I’m trying to figure out how to get a ~42ish trawler for ~$100k (which means 1980s ish) and sail to the Bahamas and Caribbean. Monthly budget at that point would ideally be around $4k to $6k. First of all are those numbers even possible?

But how do people get experience and insurance, if you don’t live somewhere where you already have a boat? All the courses I can find, especially where we currently are in Brazil, are for sailing, not motor yachts. Is there a path where we could pay a captain to teach us for a while? How much would something like that cost?

The biggest boat I’ve ever driven was 32ft twin engine, and I have only sailed tiny boats up to 16ft. I love sailing but I don’t think a sailboat is best for us and the Bahamas. Never personally owned one, so I’ll show up on insurance as having no experience.

I had no idea the Z8 was this capable for video.

Z8 gives you 3.8k N-Raw 60fps 2.3x crop meaning the close up clip here is 600mm * 2.3 = 1,380mm effective focal length.

All of this is N-Raw graded in DaVinci resolve. N-Raw is the first codec I’ve ever used that lets me enjoy editing video and doesn’t feel like the colors fall apart the instant your white balance is slightly off or you want to edit the colors.

I love the images from Z lenses but G and D lenses looked and felt so much more serious…

ND filters for larger lenses?

I’m filming horses for auction in Brazil, which requires long focal lengths and tons of panning shots so shutter angle is super important. But that means I’m always stuck at f/20 ish, and I can’t find a 95mm variable ND for sale online on Mercado livre or in any stores (I even checked in Montevideo recently).

I’m filming with a 180-600mm lens which has a 95mm filter thread, are variable ND filters normally only used on small lenses and there’s a different thing I should be using for larger lenses that I just don’t know how to search for online or in stores?

I also have a 24-120mm f/4 lens with a 77mm filter thread, so I was able to buy an ND filter for that but 120mm looks pretty amateurish for this super formulaic type of video, and my 24-120 relies entirely on my Nikon z8’s ibis for stabilization.

I’m mainly a wildlife photographer, so I didn’t plan on filming when I picked my lenses.

Loving the 35mm f/1.8 Z S. And you’re telling me the other f/1.8 primes are even better‽
